Designing a story Problem (Piecewise Function Project)

Real life Situation:
Chad Johnson is a newly signed professional soccer player for Mylesburg FC, joining the club with a signing transfer fee of €2 million, which represents his guaranteed earning in the first season. During his first season, Chad’s earnings remain constant at €2 million. In the second season, his performance improves significantly, causing his earnings to rise at a constant rate to €3 million by the end of that season. His form continues to improve throughout the third season, playing a pivotal role in their league title win, with his earnings increasing further at a constant rate to €5 million by the season’s end. However, his performance declines sharply in the fourth season, dropping his earnings at a constant rate to €4 million. In the fifth and final season, Chad’s performance gradually worsens, leading to a decrease in earnings that returns at a constant rate to €2 million by the end of the season. Eventually, due to his inconsistent performance, he was let go.

I was most proud of our story because when graphed, we had more than 5 different slopes in our piecewise graph.x

The hardest part of creating the piecewise function was calculating all the equations based on the lines.

If I could revise one part of this project, I would make it so that that there were a variety of slopes, not just a few that were repeated.

This project of piecewise functions helped me understand that the story created had to have a gradual and consistent increase or decrease instead of just immediately dropping or going up.

Art Mixed Media Reflection

What key message do you want your audience to understand about you?

That i don’t see the world as split apart. My mind connects music, cities, art, and design into one flowing experience. This artwork shows how all these influences mix together to make me who I am. By putting the messy, wild style of Basquiat next to clean images of cars and Hong Kong, I show my personality has both order and chaos. I incorporated Hong Kong because it is a mixed-up, energetic city, just like the artwork.

How did you take risks and experiment?

My biggest risk was mixing styles that don’t usually go together. I put street-style, scribbly Basquiat marks right next to polished album art and car designs. I risked it looking messy, but it shows my real, unfiltered feelings next to my clean tastes. For the Basquiat part, I had to work fast and loose with paint and Posca markers, not planning every mark. This was risky, but it made that section feel alive and emotional.

Design Technology Unit 1 tissue box

In a grade 8 design class at the Shanghai American School Puxi, students were tasked with designing a functional tissue box as part of their curriculum. The project aimed to apply design principles and processes to create an aesthetically pleasing and practical tissue box. The key design goals were to create a tissue box that would help prevent the spread of germs by providing a physical barrier between users, while also incorporating an appealing cubic form. The students explored various materials and techniques, including plywood, acrylic, spray paint, and masking tape, to achieve their design objectives.

The design process began with brainstorming and sketching initial ideas using the design software Inscape. The students then selected the most promising concept and proceeded to the prototyping stage, utilizing a laser cutter to cut the necessary pieces. During the assembly phase, the students carefully fitted the components together to create the desired cubic form and functional tissue box. To add visual interest, they incorporated spray paint and masking tape techniques into their designs.

Throughout the project, the students applied key design principles such as form follows function, simplicity, and harmony. The cubic shape was chosen to provide a practical tissue storage solution, while the clean, geometric design elements contributed to an elegant and minimalist aesthetic. The use of complementary colors and materials created a visually cohesive final product.

The completed tissue box designs showcased the students’ creativity and problem-solving skills. The project provided valuable hands-on experience in the design process, allowing the students to explore the balance between aesthetics and functionality. This experience will contribute to their ongoing development as young designers, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to tackle future design challenges.

Above are some of the first drawings I created based on the cubism design movement.

Soccer PE Reflection

Since I had played football a lot in the past, I already knew the basic skills, rules, and strategies. I understood how to pass, catch, run, and tackle correctly. I also knew about different offensive and defensive plays.

Because of my prior experience, I was able to pick up the drills and scrimmages very quickly. I could do the skills really well, and I often ended up helping explain things to my classmates who were still learning. In the small games, I could anticipate what would happen better and take advantage of opportunities that the others missed.

Overall, my previous experience with football was a big help for me in this unit. It allowed me to progress faster, assist my peers, and demonstrate my abilities in a way that set me apart from the rest of the class. This head start really contributed to my success and enjoyment of the football unit.

Socratic Seminar Reflection

I picked these photos because you could see who I added onto and who added onto me after. In addition, you could see how many times I spoke and for how long. This shows that I contributed to the conversation and added onto people’s ides.

Kool Koor Reflection

Kool Koor’s background in Bronx graffiti shapes his art style. His use of bright colors and bold lines reflects urban life. The techniques he showed us, like layering and typography, highlight his roots in street art and the importance of storytelling through art.

Kool Koor’s move from street art to studio work changes how he creates. In the streets, art is spontaneous and influenced by the environment. In the studio, there’s more time to think and complete ideas. During the workshop, I felt mostly just studio work. This is because we had time to think and plan out which meant that the final piece was what we planned it to be.

As I create my self-portrait mixed media artwork, my Chinese background will influence my choices. I plan to include traditional patterns and colours that represent my heritage such as red which represents luck and prosperity in the Chinese culture. I can also add gold which signifies power and wealth. This will help me express my unique identity and journey through my art.

Sticker project reflection

My sticker project was based on a geometric shark. One thing I liked about my project was that is was quite easy to recognise and simple. In addition, I included most the required shapes and transformations. One thing I wish was different would be to maybe make it online so that is would look better.

Maths Unit 1 Reflection and Goal Setting

1.    I chose question 1 in the level 4 as evidence of my best thinking because I showed clear understanding of using evidence to answer questions by using some congruency statements.

2.    I chose 6 and 7 as evidence of my best thinking because I correctly stated the congruency statement with the postulate of the triangle.

3.    Throughout this unit, I improved the most at dilations. This is because at the start of this unit, I didn’t know how to scale shapes and the key points of information.

4.    I feel that I still need to work on being more specific when answering questions..

5.    List three of your strengths so far this year. I now can correctly dilate shapes, identify the postulates, and give evidence for my answer.

6.    List three things you want to improve on in the next unit. Next unit, I need to take my time in answering the questions, to prevent careless mistakes.

 7.    Create an academic goal by completing the sentences and answering the questions.

8.In the next unit, I want to read and answer the questions slowly so that I can improve my accuracy compared to when I am rushing through the test.

9.Something that might get in the way of my goal would be time limits on a test.

 10. If I am stuck or need help, I could either skip the question and come back to it after, or just ask the teacher for help.

Unit 1: First Contact

In this topic, we had to teach an AI bot how to speak proper English. We had to cover many basic components of English known as parts of speech such as nouns, adjectives, verbs, etc. In addition, we also had to teach it sentence structures so that it could use a range of different types of sentences to express its thinking. At first, I struggled to teach the alien anything because it didn’t know any english, but as time went on, I slowly understood how to teach the alien different parts of speech using the teach, word, part, function format. One thing I could improve on is to change the bad habits of my alien to stop only using 2 different sentence types by showing examples of a range of sentence types so that the alien will know how to use them.
