Health 8 Unit 2: Tech, Media, and Mental Health

I used to think that that mental health meant people who have disorders or people that are physically disabled. However, after understanding and learning about this unit. I learned that mental health could also mean that a person is psychologically disabled. I think a major misconception that I had with mental disability that I had on mental health was that I always thought people with mental health were people that are physically disabled but after this unit I learned that there was people that also suffered inner disorders, like depression, eating disorders, and etc.

But now I learned that even though some mental disorders start at birth, however in some cases mental disorders can also be developed as you gradually grow older. I think that my perspective has shifted towards people with mental illnesses or people who experience them since I always thought that mental illnesses were just people that were physically disabled which was a wrong perspective. However now I understand that it might be a psychological issue.

Health Unit 2: WOOP Goal

Multimedia Analysis and Review

Part 1

My hypothesis: Within 7 days of using this app, I expect to become happier and more open-minded when gradually trying new things.

3 measurable outcomes I wish to see in 7 days after interacting/using the APP: The first outcome i wish to see in 7 days is that I am overall more open minded to try new things, the second outcome I wish to see in 7 days after using the app is to be happier, and lastly the 3rd outcome I wish to see is that my mind is clearer and more refreshed after interacting with the app.

My baseline wellness metric (mood scale per day) after using the app: Day 1: Excited, Day 2: Happy, Day 3: Happy, Day 4: Sad, Day 5: Depressed, Day 6: Chill Day 7: Energetic

Part 2

Functionality:

Happify is a really well-rounded app to use for my WOOP goal as you could pick tracks that fits for your personal goals with 70 and more created by leading happiness experts and most of the tracks are free. Happify uses tracks where you go through every day spending 10-15 minutes completing and reflecting with games, or just some basic essay writing that helps you reflect on your day. The feature that I used the most was the essay writing one as before you start they would allow you to chat with a personalized AI chat bot to help you brainstorm and reflect on an idea to write about. While on the other hand the feature that I used the least from Happify was the ones that include a game since these were often distracting and didn’t help me think and reflect on how I respond to changes in my life with a positive attitude. After comparing with Happify’s description/marketing I think it do help break habits and makes you positive however methods that I did like playing the game in Happify was really distracting and caused me to get sidetracked a lot so if Happify inserted more if these interactions with AI and reflection writing I think it would defiantly be more effective in which you will see faster growth and change. Some limitations from the Happify app is they also include a expensive paid version called Happify plus prevents the access to some tracks and also interferes with the overall experience with the app.

Happify’s Features:

Happify Plus (Paid Version):

Usefulness:

After analyzing the baseline data from part 1 ever since I used the app I tended to be happy almost the entire 7 days however during day 4, and 5 I got a lot of homework and was really stressed out which caused my emotions to spiral downwards. But I think my emotion was really stable overall from using the app, Happify. As a result of using Happify for 7 days I do see a shift in my thinking when it comes to approaching things. As now I think more rather then just shutting off the idea of trying something new. The app encouraged me to be more positive and happy everyday which was something that I didn’t expect as a result of using the app. I think this app is really easy to use and their is nothing religion related its just a happiness well being app. People that make goals like stress and happiness might be a fit for this app since this app is all about being happy and reducing your stress.

Language Art Unit 1 Reflection

What did I learn about language, communication, or writing through this unit?

I learned about the preposition positioning, about how it be at the start of a sentence, at the end of the sentence, or as a subject-verb split. I also learned about different types of sentences. For example, a simple sentence, a complex sentence, and compound sentence.

Unit 1 Health: Psychology, Stress, and The Brain

After learning about how the brain works, I’ve really noticed a change in my behavior. I now take a moment to pause and think before I react, instead of just acting immediately. This helps me make better decisions instead of acting on impulse. One surprising thing I found out is how our brains react to stress. Understanding this has made me more empathetic toward my friends, especially when they have emotional outbursts that might seem unreasonable. Realizing that these reactions are part of brain development helps me respond in a more caring way. I’ve also started using box breathing to manage my stress. By taking a few minutes every ten to breathe deeply, I think I can handle stress better and feel calmer overall. This approach feels like a small but important step in my journey to stay calm and focused.

Probability Fair Reflection

Game Rules

Mystic Draw is a special card game played between two people: a drawer and a player. In this game, the drawer holds the deck of cards. The goal is for both the drawer and the player to draw cards. Each person needs to carefully select six cards from the deck. The key to winning the game is matching the cards drawn. To achieve victory, the player’s six cards must be exactly the same as the drawer’s six cards. This means the numbers on the cards must match perfectly. Also, any kings, queens, or jacks must also match up. If all six cards are identical for both people, the player wins. Mystic Draw is a game of chance and matching.

Process of Making the Game

The game didn’t have many pieces. We only really made one thing, which was a sign. The main part of the game was actually the cards. Everything you did in the game depended on those cards. When we built the sign, we worked on it together. Everyone helped out with making it. It felt good to work as a team. There weren’t any arguments or disagreements. We all got along and focused on finishing the sign. It was a simple game, but building that sign was a good experience.

Something that Well & Changes

The probability fair turned out to be a really enjoyable event for us. My friends and I had a lot of fun going around and trying out the different games other groups had created. It was cool to see all the creative ideas people came up with. We also had a good time running our own game station. Seeing people play our game and have fun was rewarding. If there is one thing we think could have been better, it would be having more prizes ready. We used up almost all our prizes for the younger kids before lunchtime even arrived. After the break, we barely had anything left to give to the fourth and fifth graders. It felt bad not being able to give prizes to everyone who played our game later in the day. Having enough prizes for all the students is important for a fair like this.

Comparing Experimental Probability to the Theoretical Probability.

We held a fair where people could try games of chance. Before the fair, we figured out how often someone should win. We used math to guess the chances of winning each game. This was like our planned or expected outcome based on our rules. But when the fair was actually happening, we saw what really took place. We watched carefully as people played the games. It turned out that many people won prizes. More people won than our math told us should happen. This meant the real winning chance was greater than our first guess. The actual results were different from what we expected

Looking Back at Our Last Unit and the Year

Main Theme

The Pentagon Papers case really opened my eyes to how important it is for the government to be honest with us. I learned that when leaders keep secrets and aren’t transparent, it can really hurt our country. The Pentagon Papers showed that the government wasn’t telling the truth about the Vietnam War. This made a lot of people angry and made them not trust the government anymore. It showed me how important it is for the government to be open so that we can make good decisions. The government’s actions were a misuse of power and showed how they tried to trick people in the United States. This made me realize we always need to question what our leaders are doing and make sure they are telling us the truth, because that’s how democracy is supposed to work.

The Presentation

I worked on my Pecha-Kucha presentation mostly at home. I wanted to make sure it was good, so I shared it with my friends. They gave me advice, and I used that to make it better at home. My main goal was to pick the most important information and use words that everyone could easily understand. This way, my presentation would be clear and grab people’s attention. One tough part was trying to remember all the important dates and facts. It took some time to get them right, but I knew it was important to have the correct details in my presentation. By focusing on clear language and key details, I hoped to make the topic easy for everyone to follow and understand.

Personal Growth

Looking back, I really think my attitude towards this class has gotten a lot better. At the beginning, I wasn’t so sure, but now I feel like I’ve learned a lot and grown. I’ve read some great books this year. My top five would have to be Scythe, Thunderhead, The Toll, Gleanings: Stories from the Arc of a Scythe, and Salt to the Sea. If I had to pick just one, I’d tell everyone to read Salt to the Sea. It’s a World War II story with lots of different characters sharing their points of view, which makes it super interesting. Scythe was a tough read, though. The words and writing style were pretty complicated, so it took me a while to really get into it.

Social Studies Unit 4: Documentary Film

Process of Making our Film

Finding information for our film festival project wasn’t too tricky because we each did our own research. It didn’t take a lot of talking or teamwork. Writing the essay, though, was where my partner and I messed up. We didn’t work as hard as we should have on it. When it came to filming and putting the movie together, my partner and I really shined. We raced to the top spot by creating the best film in the least amount of time. Our group’s movie had the highest quality, and we finished faster than the other teams.

Effective Collaborator

Overall, my partner and I collaborated effectively on this project, with the exception of the essay writing portion. We successfully navigated the challenge of staying focused and avoiding distractions during class time. Specifically, the division of labor was equitable. We ensured that tasks and responsibilities were distributed in a way that felt fair to both of us, which contributed to a balanced workload. Although we worked well together in other areas, we faced some difficulty when it came to writing the essay. We could improve on our essay-writing skills to produce a better final product in the future.

Math Summative Unit 5: Problem Solving

Growth

I believe a growth that I had with this summative is a growth or a hint of growth/progress from my previous summative and assessments I also had growth with my calculations and shown an improved understanding of what we were learning in class (Volume, Problem Solving, and etc.).

Improvements

I believe an improvement that I can do after this summative is to focus more on practicing what we were learning during the unit through IXL or just review from the class works, notes, and homework. I have to admit the main reason I got a 2.5 was not enough practicing which now reflecting on my work was crucial especially to review subjects that we learned during class kind of like “keeping your mind fresh”. After hearing from my math teacher, Ms. Ari she explained that the reason I got a 2.5 was not explaining my thoughts and steps toward my work while just laying it out and the shapes on my paper must be either to scale or through a ratio. I also don’t know if I got calculations correct or incorrect for my project. Even though it took me a long time to craft a 3D printing model and doing all the calculations so that would’ve been a mistake if or if not. I think the mistakes that I made could have been easily avoided but anyway I received good feedback from Ms. Ari that I well implement to my next unit’s Summative.

Summative Language Arts Socratic Seminar Reflection

Planning Doc

For my Planning Doc I improved with the length of my writing over time from writing nothing to writing out of the box. Some challenges that I have found repetitively over my writing starting from the pre-assesment, formative and summative was that I used incorrect conventions and author quoting from the story. I also tend to miss a box with either the Quotes or discussion points which actually damages the final score a lot. During the summative I didn’t fully incorporate aspects to my writing. If I could redo the summative I would write a lot and try to finish the essay so I can go over all of the conventions/aspects I would also improve my writing and scan through while writing so I would need to check less and fix. I would waste less times for prepping during class and also when writing my planning doc as a lot of the key details for writing a good planning doc was shared during class and i didn’t really cling on to the important details or missed it. I would spend less time worrying about the planning doc writing and just directly go for it In result I wasted like 10-15 mins thinking/complaining to myself how hard it is. 1 advice I would give my self for the summative is “JUST DO IT” and don’t worry about anything I would also need to pay attention in class to better fulfill this advice. One goal for my future work is to see how long I can pay attention or focus to one thing which can help me with understanding during class.

Disccusion

I believed that my discussion greatly improved throughout the course of the Socratic seminar/CER unit as it helped strengthen my speaking and form better ideas without stuttering. Some challenges with doing the discussions was responding while also keeping track on where I am, on the paper so I can give out correct evidence. If I could redo the assessment I would have defiantly added more evidence into the conversation that we were having I would also have fixed responding after others opinions and actually fully commit to it not like “I agree” I believed that I could have came to the discussion more prepared with the history of the Second Sudanese War as I couldn’t grasp fully on to what some of my peers was talking about. 1 advice I would give to my self for the summative is to better come prepared with evidence and knowledge to the conversation also try to respond more to what others are saying. One goal for my future work is to practice my understanding with background and also respond with what others are saying is by talking to by parents with like politics or just topics about current world situations.

Science Algal bloom Unit Reflection

Reflecting on pond ecosystems, I’ve realized how crucial photosynthesis is for energy and matter cycles. It’s not just about plants making food; it’s about how energy flows through the whole pond. The water, carbon, and nitrogen cycles are also vital for life on Earth. These cycles move stuff between living things, the air, and the ground. Photosynthesis turns light into energy that feeds all the plants and animals in the pond. Photosynthesis also changes the way carbon, oxygen, and other important things move around. Plants take in carbon to make food and give off oxygen that animals need to breathe. These processes keep the pond healthy by recycling the things that plants and animals need to live.

Reflecting on our study of pond ecosystems, I’ve come to a deeper understanding of how everything is connected. Before, I knew about cycles like water, carbon, and nitrogen, but they seemed like separate ideas. Doing experiments, like building our own little ecosystem in a bottle, really brought it all together. Photosynthesis isn’t just about plants making food; it’s the power source for the entire pond. It’s the process that drives the movement of carbon, water, and nitrogen, which are all essential for life. Realizing how crucial it is made me think about how important it is to protect our environment. Using the Gizmos simulations, we could change different parts of the pond ecosystem and see what happened. It was eye-opening to see how even small changes, like adding too much fertilizer, could have big and negative effects. It showed me how easily these systems can get out of balance.
