Dystopian Fiction-The Giver 📖

What did I do?

I learned about Dystopian Fiction by reading The Giver and writing academic paragraphs responding to questions about the text.

What did I learn?

I builded on my vocabulary by doing Vocab tests. I learned to use different transition words to write paragraphs to summarize chapters. I learned how to discuss with classmates more fluently and how to share more ideas.

What worked?

I understand the text by doing discussions. I’m proud of myself for finishing a book.

What did not work?

I’m planning to share more ideas in discussions next time.

Personal Relevance

This learning helps my goals because I now think reading is interesting and fun. I can improve on my english and fluency.

BAKE SALE😛

What did we do?

We made food based on what we learned. Making food and sell it in order to calculate the percent and rates. Me and my partner made TIRAMISU. We made 4 different flavors of tiramisu: Mango, Matcha, Strawberry, and Original. We sell it for ¥20 per slice and ¥10 for 1/2. We made lots of profits and everything was sold out.

What did we learn?

We learned how to calculate percent and rates. We converted unit rates and rates and learned how converting works. My goal was to complete all tasks and make my project delicious.

What Worked?

Everything was well!!! Even though I didn’t get to eat the tiramisu on the bake sale (because it was too popular!!! ALL SOLD OUT!) I felt happy when everyone sprinted towards my booth.

What did not work?

The calculations I guess, We planned to sell it for ¥40 per slice, but we realized that its TOO expensive!!!! SO we changed it to ¥20. Also, the day me and Jenny tried to test the taste, there’s not enough materials, so I had to buy 8 boxes of mascarpone cheese. (I spent lots of money😭)

Personal Relevance

This project helped my future life because my communication skills will improve. Maybe I’ll find a job in the bakery!!! Or open a bakery🍞.

Unit II – Ötzi Unit Reflection

What did I work on?

During the unit, we mainly focused on the Ötzi crime. We practiced making observations, inferences, and wonderings. We learned how to write CER paragraphs. Based on what we read from the articles, we got evidence for our paragraph and thought of reasonings. Before the Ötzi mock trial, we practiced answering open and closed questions. Finally, the fun project!!! The mock trial. I was an expert witness.

What did I learn?

In this unit, we focused on “Why should we care about the past?” Based on the Ötzi observation, I noticed that I learned a lot. I improved my skills. We should care about the past because we could gain more knowledge about history. We can connect to early humans. We will notice what has changed and what we still have to improve on. The most important thing is that we can see growth.

What worked well?

I’m proud of myself for being the only witness who is studying Personal Belongings. During the Mock Trial, I played solo. My partner didn’t come. But I still performed great.

What did not work?

During the Mock Trial, my partner did not come. I played solo. I was so nervous at first when the lawyer asked me questions. But then, I kind of found a way to speak louder and feel more confident.

Personal Relevance

Based on what we practiced, I think the Mock Trial was very useful for our future because when there’s important meetings, I can be more confident. This unit is useful because it helps improve our communication skills. We collaborated with our partners.

🥚Egg Car Challenge!🚗

What did I do?😋

We made egg cars to test Newton’s 1st and 3rd law.

What did I learn?

We saw newton’s first law of Inertia when the car crashes towards the “wall”. The car kept on going, finally crashes and stops by an unbalanced force. As Newton’s first law stated,”An object at rest tends to stay at rest, an object in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.”

We saw Newton’s 3rd law of Action Reaction when the car bumps towards the wall. The car crashing is the action force and the wall reacted by pushing against the car.

What Worked?😛

Me and my partner decided to make an egg car with strong base. It worked well when we were testing. It did not flip or slide.

What did not work?

Our car flipped when we test, so the egg cracked. Next time, we can improve by making the car more still and put paper on the bottom to make friction.

💪Personal Relevance

In this unit, I now know why cars are designed like the way they look. They make the front part long because it is like the crumble zone. Seatbelts are made to protect us from falling out/forward.

🎈Balloon Car🚗

What Did I do?😋

The balloon car was built using plastic straws, paper plates, axles, and balloons. We used it to learn about Newton’s Laws. We learned a lot about forces.😛

What Did I learn?😃

Newton’s 1st Law of Inertia says “An object at rest tends to stay at rest, and object in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. We see this law in action with the Balloon Car when the car moves and stops by friction or an unbalanced object.

Newton’s 2nd Law of Acceleration says “The greater the mass of the object, the more force needed to move it.” We see this law in action with the Balloon Car when we add mass/weight to the car, the distance it travels decreases.

Newton’s 3rd law of Action Reaction says”Every action has an equal, opposite reaction”. We see this law in action with the Balloon Car when the air from the balloon comes out, and the car moves.

What worked?🤫

I collaborated well with Jenny because we “Put our ideas on the table.” We combined both of our ideas together and made a car. Our car came out great!!!But we didn’t win🥹.

What Did Not work?

It was a struggle when we have to figure out how we should build our balloon car. To solve this problem, we combined our ideas together.🥲

Personal Relevance🙃

I see Newton’s 1st law in real life when I ride a bicycle. I keep on moving unless friction stops me. It is important to know these laws because it helps me to understand how forces works.😯

🥹Unit 2-Growth and Development😋

1. Why is it important to understand the changes that occur during puberty?😊

😂Understanding puberty is very important because it helps you from being scared or confused. It helps you take care of yourself. You will notice your habits changes, you will learn to wash your face, clean your body more carefully. Going through puberty helps you understand your feelings, and makes you feel less alone.

2. What is the change that you feel most confident about?🥸

Some changes I am confident about is that I became more mature. I don’t laugh about people anymore. I give gently reminders to them and I also don’t fight with my sister anymore.😃

3. When looking for information online, how can you ensure it is credible and appropriate?😛

I will ask myself: Who made it? Are they reliable? When is it made? Why did they make it? What is it for?🥳

Critical Thinking POST:)

What did I do?

I used my critical thinking skills to complete challenges with the indi robot car and build rollercoasters with Gravitrax.

What did I learn?

I learned about how I will be graded for Critical Thinking. Critical Thinking is my ability to solve problems and make the right decisions.

What Worked?

Critical Thinking skills worked well in this activity because it makes me understand more and helps me fix my mistakes. It also helps me improve!!!

What did not work?

I struggled when we were figuring out what each color is used for, at first, we didn’t collaborate well.

Personal Relevance

Today’s learning helped me figure out how to solve difficult problems, and don’t give up.

Unit 1: Campaign for the Olympics Reflection.

UNIT 1: CAMPAIGN FOR THE OLYMPICS REFLECTION

1.WHAT DID I WORK ON?

During the Campaign for the Olympics unit, I worked on my Olympic presentation of why I want the IOC to choose my city to host the Olympics. We worked a lot on our Script Organizers. (We spent 5 hours on it 😱) We researched a lot to get information to present. After that, we copied our script down on note cards and presented.

2.WHAT DID I LEARN?

I learned a lot about the Olympics. At first, I thought the Olympic logo only had 4 rings, but after I researched, I now know its 5 rings in different colors. I also learned to present with note cards, not just reading the presentation.

3.WHAT WORKED?

I am very proud of myself because I completed my presentation and got a meeting!!! For the filler words, I got exceeding!!! All those preparations were worth it. I gave some examples when I was presenting, and it didn’t fail.

4.WHAT DID NOT WORK?

I was planning on to present more fluently and memorize more of my script. I still had lots of eye contact but just didn’t get to my goal. When I was presenting, I was very nervous but when I started to get experience, I slowly found strategies.

5.PERSONAL RELAVANCE.

In this unit, me and Pennie collaborated a lot. On the night before the presentation, we called each other on WeChat for about 2 hours for the presentation. We wrote our scripts on notecards and practiced a lot.  We practiced a lot on our communication and learned a lot throughout the unit.

🙉ANALYZING CHARACTERS🙈

I learned to use the TOAD strategy, I use text evidence and sometimes use what the narrater directly tells me. I noticed at the start of the year, I only use some weak evidence, but throughout the unit, I learned to add stronger evidence and quotes.
