Unit 2: Reflection & Semester Check-In

I chose question 1: Functions as evidence as my best thinking because I showed understanding of the functions of a graph.

I chose question 3: Statistics as evidence as my best thinking because I showed that I understand word problems, and I could effectively show my work before solving the problem. However, I didn’t understand the last question of the word problem page, and I could improve by reviewing this unit more.

Throughout unit 2, I improved the most at understanding word problems, before coming to SAS, I had trouble solving them, which was because I struggled to understand the wording as some of the problems may be very confusing.

One skill in this unit I still need to work on is understanding more vocabulary on this unit, this is because I didn’t understand some of them, and wasn’t able to use them in the test, such as the critical thinking.

The biggest challenge of this assessment for me was matching equations to graphs, tables, or word problems. I had to figure out how to plug in the equations to make it relatable to the representations.

One strategy that helped me on the test was memorizing equations, I found this very helpful because most of the unit was about equations, and I struggled on the CFUs before the bigger assessment when I didn’t memorize the equations, which led to me trying to improvise and figure out a relation between the variables.

I set myself a goal before this unit, it was to step out of my comfort zone and participate more in class, or even just ask questions. I am improving on my social skills, but I still might need to work on answering questions in class and not be afraid to be wrong.

Project: Designing a Story Problem

In this project, my partner and I designed a word problem based on the story of KoBron Jordan, who is a famous basketball player from the Classroom Basketball Association. Our story was about a doctor testing his heart rate throughout the game, from two minutes before the game ends to when he shoots the shot at the end of the game to thirty seconds after the shot, or after the end of the game.

I am most proud of having my partner and I both contribute a fair amount to the project. For example, I was to draw the graph and do some of the writing, then she was to do the rest. However, there were a few challenges throughout the few days we did the project. We had some trouble thinking of a situation, and tried to use AI to give us some ideas, but we ended up trying again and coming up with a funnier situation. If I could improve this project, it would have been the questions we came up with, this is because I didn’t know how to come up with hard but solvable problems. This project made me understand more about piecewise functions as it had a funny real life situation, and starting with coming up with a piecewise function problem made me more interested in making it, which led to a decent understanding of the topic.

Unit 3: Identity and Healthy Relationships

Project:

In this project, my group mate and I were to explain what a healthy relationship would look like, and we chose the Spider-man and MJ movie series with Far From Home and No Way Home. In our presentation, we explained how the couple Peter Parker (Spider-man) and Michelle-Jones Watson showed a healthy relationship as they respected each other’s boundaries and never looked down on each other; for example, in some of the scenes of both movies, when Peter was in danger and was getting attacked by the villains, MJ, who had no superpowers, jumped into the fight and tried to protect Peter. In the movie No Way Home, Peter made a hard decision to erase himself from MJ’s memory to protect her. These actions could show that both of the characters would put each other before themselves.

In unit 3 in 8th grade health class, I learnt that a lot of people would have different gender identities and should be respected, as most of them would feel isolated by society when people around them judge them about their identity. I also learned that a lot of things normalized in many relationships is actually unhealthy, such as failed communication or not giving each other space to make friends. Another thing I learnt is that a lot of things we do in life can be gender stereotypical; for example, the concept that pink is for girls and blue is for boys is heavily normalized, but its actually a gender stereotype.

Aquatics Unit

In this unit of water polo, we learned about things like treading water, dribbling, passing, and shooting. I found myself being really good at blocking and defending the ball in water polo games. I was improving on passing throughout the unit, but I was struggling on shooting and holding on to the ball. In conclusion, I enjoyed this unit and I am looking forward to doing another swimming unit in high school.

Unit 2 Portfolio: Reflection on Learning

I used to think that people with depression would make it obvious to other people around them that they have the disorder. I also used to think that people with an addiction problem would stop their habit when they want to, such as abusing drugs or drinking alcohol.

After learning about mental health issues in unit 2 and also watching the presentations, I understood a lot more on mental health. I learned that I was stigmatizing the people with mental health disorders; some people with depression would hide their sadness and make themselves look cheerful and happy in front of their peers. People with addiction problems would develop physical diseases or even risks of death if they stoped immediately. What they should do is that they should go seek help from an adult, a therapist, or a counsellor if SAS students have these problems.

Semester 1 Active Learner Reflection

My current goal is that I would like to participate more in class, even if I don’t have confidence in myself, meaning that I’m always afraid that I’ll embarrass myself in class. I want to achieve this goal by just trying to raise my hand in classes and just convince myself I am right.

I already have asked a few questions to our teacher this semester and its a small progress to me. I should try to ask questions in front of classmates in class in the future.

9.What are you most proud of in this class so far?
(Think about times when you showed persistence, improvement, collaboration, or deep understanding.)

10.What has been your biggest challenge in this class?
(For example: managing time, staying focused, contributing in group work, or understanding a concept.)

11.How have you demonstrated the qualities of an Active Learner — preparing effectively, participating fully, collaborating well, staying positive, and reflecting to improve?

Are there any areas where you want to grow or improve next quarter?

I would like to improve on participating in class. I could also reach out to the students and teachers whenever I need help on something.

Unit 1: Sticker Project

In this project, I chose a diving block with the number four on it. This is because number four means lane four, which is the middle lane in an olympic sized pool. The middle lane is often for the fastest swimmer in each heat, a lot of swimmers would be honored to swim in the special lane.

What I liked most about this project is that it gives us an opportunity to draw a sticker and express ourselves. What I wished was different was that I wouldn’t need to use all of the transformations, including dilation, translation, reflection and rotation. This is because I struggled drawing four diving blocks in different forms.

Unit 1: Reflection and Goal Setting

Select two questions from the Unit 1 Celebration of Learning that reflect your best thinking in this unit:

1.    I chose describing a dilation of a polygon with mathematical precision as evidence of my best thinking because I was very specific with my descriptions. This problem also shows my improvement as I wasn’t sure how to find the scale factors and center of dilations in the CFU before the Celebration of Learning.

2.    I chose telling if the triangles are congruent or not and also explaining why or why not as evidence of my best thinking because they show that I understand the topic very well as I explained clearly why the triangles can be proven congruent for both questions.

Complete each of these sentences.

3.    Throughout this unit, I improved the most at describing dilations.

4.    I feel that I still need to work on being less careless on problems such as the theorems of congruent triangles.

5.    List three of your strengths so far this year.

  • Congruent triangles
  • Describing sequences of transformations using mathematical precisions

6.    List three things you want to improve on in the next unit.

  • Critical thinking skills
  • Being less careless
  • Linear functions

 7.    Create an academic goal by completing the sentences and answering the questions.

In the next unit, I want to be less careless and participate more in class. This is because every time I do math, my attention span doesn’t let me focus, which leads to careless answers. What I could do to solve this is to use social media only when I have to, this can help as I could develop a longer attention span and do math without checking my phone.

What might get in the way of this goal?

What gets in the way of this goal is the devices and also myself not able to focus on one task.

What can I do if I get stuck or need help?

If I get stuck or need help, I would tell my parents to take away my phone until I finish all my homework, which helps as there wouldn’t be anything to distract me when I’m doing math.

WOOP Goal Project

W.O.O.P. Goal: My WOOP goal is about how I’m not able to manage my time properly between studies and extra-curricular activities, leading to an unhealthy sleep schedule; I would like to change that and have a better sleep schedule. The app I chose is called Habit Tracker, which helps remind me of resting for a while using notifications until I keep doing my homework. This can help to calm myself down instead of panicking about the due date of the homework.

The photo provided above shows that the app sends me notifications every day at a specific time. This helped me a lot as I usually have a very bad habit of doing everything I have to do and get zero rest.

The app has a lot of functions, not only does it send notifications on a specific time, it also makes me fill in what percent of the goal I have done. For example, one of my goals is to adapt a habit of getting more rest. After I see the notification and get some rest, I would click into the app and pour water into a water tank in the app. When the tank is filled, it would mean that I have achieved my goal. This helped me a lot and I already filled the tank up to 85%.

However, this app also has its downsides. Sometimes I am in a bad mood, which can lead me to being very annoyed when I receive notifications, including the ones from the app Habit Tracker. This would lead to me turning on do not disturb and forgetting to turn it back off, which is how I didn’t receive notifications from it for three days.
