Art Mixed Media Self-Portrait

  • Audience Insight: What key message do you want your audience to understand about you as they view your artwork? How did you communicate this message?

A key message I want my audience to understand about me as they view my artwork is that I am very playful, joyful, and creative. I communicate this message by focusing on playful colours for the main colour in my artwork and including many characters, food or activities that remind me of enjoyable times.

  • Risk and Experimentation: During the creation of your artwork, how did you take risks and experiment in order to effectively express your intended message?

During the creation of my artwork, I took the risk and experimented with the colourful border for my hat, and also with the spray-painted dotty background to effectively express my intended message of what symbolises me.

Art Mini Unit- Kool Koor Reflection

1. Cultural Influence on Aesthetic Choices

After meeting Kool Koor and learning about his artistic journey, how do you think his background in the graffiti culture of the Bronx influenced his aesthetic choices in the techniques and styles he demonstrated?

Kool Koor’s first time doing graffiti art was in the hallways and streets. However, his style has evolved over the past 30 years, thinking that his work has become a lot cleaner, and the way he applies paint is a lot less violent. His earlier paintings were explosions and expressions of freedom. He uses one colour at a time, trying to create a balance while also confrontation

2. Environmental Impact on Art Creation

Considering Kool Koor’s shift from street art to studio work, how do you think different environments (like the streets versus a classroom) impact an artist’s creative process and choices? In what ways did you feel these environmental influences while trying out his painting style?

I think that the different environments impact Kool Koor’s creative process and choices since, at first, when he still did graffiti art on the streets, it was more of explosions and expressions of freedom, like he said in the videos. Another point is how doing street graffiti art needs artists to be fast as well as accurate. When doing work in the studio, they can use hours and hours for just one artwork, so the style might change because of the time and environment.

3. Personal Reflection on Aesthetic Development

What aspects of your culture or environment do you think will influence your future artistic choices for your self-portrait mixed media artwork? How can you incorporate elements from your own background into your artwork to express your unique identity?

Parts of my culture and environment will influence my future art choices for my self-portrait mixed media artwork, such as my hobbies and my music taste, just like Kool Koor’s Hip Hop music, and will incorporate some of the vibes I get from the songs.

My own experiences and identity will inform the aesthetic decisions I will make for my self-portrait, for example I plan to express my musical vibes I get from my favourite songs by adding swirls, musical notes and waves. To show environment, impact, I will add beaches because I lived in Australia, near beaches, so it really inspires me to add them in my self-portrait.

The Impact of Exhibitions

In what ways can an exhibition influence the ideas, beliefs, and experiences of an audience

An exhibition can deeply influence an audience’s ideas, beliefs, and experiences by using its layout and curation. For example, the curation of the “Paths to Modernity” exhibition told a clear story by putting older art, like works by Vincent Van Gogh, on the top floor and modern art on the bottom, which clearly shows the ‘path’ art has gone through over time.

The curator’s intention to guide the audience was also clear in how rooms were organised, like putting Van Gogh’s famous bedroom painting on a central, empty wall to make the audience immediately focus on it.

Seeing artworks closely like El Anatsui’s “After the Red Moon” exhibition showed me how an artist’s choices with colour, texture, and unexpected materials like bottle caps and metal can share cultural history and beliefs, such as the history of Ghana and slave trading, which changes how audiences understand the past.

PE Table Tennis Reflection

During this unit, we are doing table tennis.

In table tennis, I have made a breakthrough in class since I could serve with better control compared to before. For example, I could place my serves to the backhand side of my opponent during our 2v2 and 1v1 games. I also improved in using backhand hits, not using stop signs and keeping a rally going for more than 15 hits.

Art- L4 Sketchbook Cover

My Sketchbook Cover (in progress) ⤴️

For my sketchbook cover, I chose to paint King Bob from Despicable Me, with a colorful background.

I chose King Bob because I thought that his personality resonates with mine. Loyal, playful and kind. The background also matches the playful vibe, and kind of contrasts a bit with the bright colors I used to paint King Bob.

The design strategy I tried to use was to make the main subject—King Bob—the largest so that everyone’s attention goes to it first. Then, I was planning on adding gummy bears to the background to add more resemblance to me, but I ended up not having enough time to add them.

I think that next time, I would aim for having a more finished piece, and making the final piece look cleaner instead of wasting so much time deciding what to do, and the sketching part.

Probability Fair Reflection

  • Explain the game you created. Include a picture of your advertisement.

We created a cookie wheel, and there were 15 slots with a 100% chance of getting a prize. The students needed to hold the ball about 2 fists above the spinner. We spin the spinner, and they need to drop whenever they think they will get the lowest numbered cup. There are 5 number 5 slots, which are a candies, 4 number 4 slots, which are candy OR squishies, 3 number 3 slots, which is a rethrow, 2 number 2 slots, which is both candy AND squishy, and 1 number 1 slot, which is the grand prize, a large stuffy.

  • How did you and your partner(s) work on creating the game? Did any conflicts arise? If so, how did you work through them?

We first made a spinner using a cardboard, but then when we tried it at the end, it could not spin properly, so we needed to redo the spinner at the last second. But even after that, we still managed to finish the project.

  • What went well during the Probability Fair? What would you change to improve it?

I think everything went pretty well, but if I needed to change something, I would probably make the time of making the spinner a bit shorter, and make it more logically correct and less harder.

  • Compare the experimental probability to the theoretical probability.

The experimental probability (out of 10 people) of getting the ball in is 50% ,however, our theoretical probability was 100%. We did not expect this to happen, since we forgot the fact that people might not get the ball in the cup.

Art Reflection- Exhibition

The Formula of Art: Islamic Tiles- We used the construction lines to create a bi-symmetrical design using intersecting lines. We then drew it on Procreate and then tessellated our design.

The Evolution of Viewing Art: Masterpiece Alteration – We learned a lot about the alterations of actual artworks. I made an alteration of a girl, making it look like a Teletubby.

Sculptural Relief: Name Plates– We created a name plate that associates with our hobbies and beliefs. I made a name plate with my name large and bold. I added small decorations next to it, so that it connects with my life.

Making an Impact: Artivist Piece- We looked at many propaganda posters throughout history, and we created some ourselves. We first thought of the SDGs and made our posters or stickers about the problems. We needed it to be attention-catching, and also good-looking at the same time.

Unit 6 Science

Part 1: Essential Question and Standard Reflection

  • Considering our exploration of our favorite food dishes and your answer to
the essential question: What chemical compounds are found in my favorite
    foods?

Discuss the simple molecules and extended structures you have
identified in your food. Make a conclusion about signs of physical and chemical changes that occur in the preparation of your favorite food.

When making strawberry boba, there are simple molecules and extended structures inside. For example, water (H₂O) is a simple molecule that is the same when heated. Sugar (glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆)), which is an extended structure, starts as a white solid with a sweet smell. When mixed with water, sugar dissolves, which shows physical change. However, when sugar is heated, it melts, changing color and flavor, which is a chemical change.

Fun Food Fair Project ⤴

Part 2: Improvement

  • If you could have done something differently to enhance your learning in
Unit 6 (for example, spending more time reviewing for the L2 quiz,
collaborating more effectively during the fun food fair project or planning
your simple and extended structures models a little more effectively), what
would it have been and why?

If you could suggest one improvement for the unit to the teacher, what
    would it be and why?

If I could have done something differently to enhance my learning in Unit 6, I would maybe done a more accurate table for the Fun Food Fair lab report. For example, when doing the physical and chemical change table, I would maybe do a more accurate measuring of the ingredients, so that all the measures would be exact. I think other than giving us more time to work on the planning, the rest of this unit is pretty good.

Portfolio Reflection Prompt: Looking Back at Our Last Unit and the Year

Main Theme

What was the abuse of power or concept you explored?

I explored the Dirty War of Argentina.

What have you learned about the research process and finding evidence?

When exploring the Dirty War of Argentina, I’ve learned that the research process involves identifying credible sources and analysing them. It shows the importance of analysing texts in order to understand complex events like abuses of power. Gathering evidence such as documents and eyewitness accounts is really important for understanding the impacts of such human rights violations.

The Presentation

What did you do to prepare for the Pecha-Kucha style presentation?

I made a presentation with photos that connect with what we are supposed to say, I used my time to memorise the main points that I should remember to say.

What was challenging about this presentation?

The main challenge during this presentation was to remember every piece of information and speak within the time given. Another challenge was to speak without saying words such as ‘um’ and ‘like’.

Upload your presentation video to your portfolio. It is better to first upload your video to your OneDrive and get a link to it.

Personal Growth

How have your ideas or skills in Language Arts developed since the beginning of the year?

What TOP 5 books have you read this year?

  • Atomic Habits
  • The Only Road
  • Paper Towns
  • The Selection
  • Dry

What is one book you would recommend?

I would recommend Paper Towns since it has a really interesting prompt.

What is one book that was challenging for you?

The Only Road because it was boring

Unit 5 Science Reflection

Part 1: Essential Question and Standard Reflection

Some reasons of why Pleasant Pond turned green is because of algal blooms. Algal blooms are sudden increases of algae in places like lakes, rivers, and oceans. Algae are green organisms that can grow very quickly under the right conditions, especially when the water is warm and there are lots of nutrients, such as from fertilzers. Some algal blooms are really harmful to the ecosystem, for example, algal blooms can block the amount of sunlight reaching into the pond, which stops plants and organisms from photosythesizing.

The algal blooms show how important matter cycling is in an ecosystem, especially the nitrogen cycle and the carbon-oxygen cycle. When there are too many nutrients, the nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizers help algae grow quickly (fertilizer run-off). This would disrupt the balance of carbon and oxygen in the water, lowering the oxygen levels which harms fishes and other aquatic animals. Photosynthesis uses carbon dioxide and water to create glucose and oxygen, which plays as a important role in the carbon cycle.

Part 2: Hands-On Experience

How did the experiential activities related to photosynthesis and
ecosystems (carbon cycle game, ecosystems in a bottle, stations activity on
food chains and webs, starch test in leaves (photosynthesis lab), and Gizmos
simulation) deepen your understanding of energy flow and matter cycling.

The activities, especially the ecosystem in a bottle, deepened my understanding of energy flow and matter cycling because they visually showed what matter cycling would look like in reality. The experience was also really interesting, but difficult, since we had to plan the ecosystem so that the air would not flow out, the water would not spill into the other ecosystem, and that the crickets would not jump into the water.

Part 3: Improvement

If I could have done something differently in Unit 5, I would have spent more time studying for the L2 quiz, since I feel like I did not use enough time to study. This would help me get an L2 the first time I handed it in. I would also use my time more wisely so that I could hand in assignments on time and good quality.
