    Unit 4 Dystopian Fiction Reflection

WHAT DID I LEARN ABOUT DYSTOPIAN FICTION?

I learnt about totalitarianism and the elements in the story: Constant Surveillance, Illusion of Utopia, Control of Nature, and many more.

HOW DOES DYSTOPIAN FICTION ENCOURAGE ME TO THINK ABOUT REAL LIFE?

It encourages me to think about the society I live in and if some things are also messed up. It also makes me think wonder if I was also living in a world or community that is similar to the Giver, but I just don’t realize it.

I really enjoyed the Giver since it made me think about things outside the book that are related to the real world. Additionally, the story itself was very interesting, it had many cliffhangers and made me want to read on. Though some parts of the book was kind of disturbing, I still liked it overall and I think I will read it again.

HOW HAS MY ABILITY TO WRITE ACADEMIC PARAGRAPHS IMPROVED?

Now, I can include more details in my paragraph and I know which transition words to use. I also learnt about the structure of an academic paragraph all the things I should include in it.

HOW HAVE I BECOME BETTER AT LITERATURE DISCUSSIONS?

I used to not be that confident when I share my ideas but preparing before the discussion made me more confident. I also validated others during the discussions, and challenged them politely if I don’t really agree with their ideas.

    Math Bake Sale

    (1)What did I do?

    • I prepared for the Bake Sale in Math class throughout 4 days.
    • On day 1, I completes parts 1, 2, and 3 choosing the recipe we wanted to cook and sell and calculating the amount of each ingredient needed to bake our recipe. Our homework was to create our Bakery Name and Signature Item Coversheet and also a recipe card.
    • On day 2, I completed parts 4 and 5, calculating the price of the ingredients to bake one batch of the recipe.
    • On day 3, I completed parts 6 and 7, finding the cost of one serving, deciding on the markup percentage and finally getting our final selling price. Our homework was to create a Canva poster that summarizes the math done in both parts.
    • On day 4, I wrote a pitch bases off the math poster that articulates how we determined our sell price based on our markup. Our homework was to create a photo collage documenting us baking the goods.
    • On day 5, we had the Bake Sale.

    (2)What did I learn?

    • I learned how to calculate the final price using the cost and markup.

    (3)What worked?

    • We sold out all of our goods and earned a lot of money.

    (4)What did not work well?

    • Our original sell price was ¥21 but it was too expensive so we changed it to ¥15.

(5)How is this relevant for me?

    • I can collaborate with others and that can help me in the future because I will have to collaborate with others too at work.
    • I also learned how to make money which I will use when I grow up.

Unit 2 Otzi Unit Portfolio Reflection

    1. What did I work on?
    • During this unit, ‘Why should we care about the past?’, I worked on
    • Making observations, inferences and wonderings
    • Using photos and articles as evidence
    • Writing a CER paragraph
    • Asking and answering open and closed questions
    • Taking part in the Otzi Mock Trial, my role was Defense Lawyer 4
    1. What did I learn? Why should we care about the past?
    • We should care about the past because it helps us learn about the present and how we got here. Additionally, it helps us understand the past better and change the future.
    1. What worked well?
    • I am proud of the following work: my CER paragraph, when I made observations, inferences and wonderings, and finding evidence.
    • I am proud of the work above because I think that I did quite well and I also enjoyed doing all of it. Also, I thought that making observations, inferences and wonderings was fun and I did a good job. Lastly, our team won the Ötzi Mock Trial, which also makes me proud.
    1. What did not work well?
    • I found some of this work challenging, writing the closing statement, cross examining the prosecution team, and speaking out loud at the Ötzi Mock Trial.
    • I found the work above challenging because I had to listen to the arguments and write the closing statement when everyone was talking so I didn’t have a lot of time. Furthermore, it was kind of scary to speak in front of a lot of people and I was afraid that I would make a mistake.
    1. Personal Relevance
    • Collaboration and communications skills are important in my future because they help me collaborate better with people that I might meet when I go to work. Also, I would be able to understand what people mean and express my ideas better when I am with other people.

    Egg Car

We had to make egg cars that would protect the egg when it rolls down the ramp and bumps into the brick.

We learnt about Newton’s 1st and 3rd laws when we made our cars. Newton’s 1st law was seen when the car stopped, but the egg tends to fly forwards. Newton’s 3rd law was seen when the car crashed into the bricks it went back a bit due to the reaction.

We worked together to build the egg car and tested it out. Also, our egg did not crack when our car bumped into the bricks.

We could have made the crumble zone a bit larger to protect the egg better. Additionally, our car kind of flipped when it crashed although our egg did not crack.

Lastly, now I understand what we should do to make a car or vehicle safer. To make cars safer, you would need a crumble zone, seat belts and airbags. I really enjoyed making the car and also the testing part, I learned a lot about Newton’s laws and how people made sure that vehicles were safe.

    Design Technology Reflection

    Graphic Design (Inkscape)

In the Graphic Design Unit, we learned how to use Inkscape and made personalized products for our clients. Firstly, we had to decide what we were going to make and who our clients were. Then, we drew out multiple designs on a piece of paper, so we could choose the one we wanted to do the most. After that, we made our chosen design in Inkscape and uploaded them to the laser cutter to cut them out. Lastly, when we got our designs, we gave it to our clients for suggestion to see whether we were successful and what we could improve to make it better. In conclusion, I thought that sometimes it was a bit difficult making my design, but it felt okay overall.

    3D Modeling (Tinkercad)

In our 3D Modeling Unit, we designed chess pieces with our group using Tinkercad. Firstly, we decided which topic we would make our pieces and we drew them out. Then, we started to make it in Tinkercad after we learnt how to use it. After that, our design was printed out by the 3D printers. Lastly, we checked them for flaws reprinted them if we had to. In conclusion, I really liked this unit, and I enjoyed making the things with my group.
