Social Studies Unit 2: Visual Presentation

This is my video: IMG_0356.MOV

The task was to create a visual presentation of the transportation or communication that shows the positive, negative, and improvements. I chose to do my model like this because it shows what needed very well and it shows creativity. My model showed everything really clearly and even related it to my essay. One thing I think I did well was making the model and doing it on time. I think I could do everything that met the standard and was very creative about it. One thing I think I could do better next time was to make it more fun. Right now it is a little boring and not that fun to look at. When I’m presenting it’s not very interesting and maybe next time I could have more interactive things.

Unit 2: Cells and Human Body Systems Portfolio Reflection

The essential question I chose was “What happens inside our bodies when we get sick?” The things I learned helped me answer my essential question because I learned about the different body systems so I could understand how the body works. I also learned about the cells which allows me to understand how a malfunction in some organelles can cause sickness. Learning about these can let me understand sicknesses. Learning about cells is the basic thing we need to learn about different sicknesses. Also, learning about body lets us understand the connections of the sickness and body. It sets a foundation for us to understand. This relates to the idea the body is a system made up of subsystems of cells. The reason is I can understand what the cells do and how they make tissues to organs to systems to organisms. Since we learned about cells it’s easier to understand. The body is a subsystem and learning about it in class lets us understand it more and better. Answering my question relates since the cells makes the body and the question is about bodies. We also learned in class that cells makes up tissues, tissues make organs, organs make organ systems, and organ systems make organisms showing the point.

The learning experience that was most impactful and memorable to me as a learner were dissections and modeling activities. The pig heart, lung, and frog was really memorable because I’ve never dissected something before and actually doing it made me remember the knowledge I needed to know even better than just sitting there and listening to the teacher talk. It was really memorable too since it was really fun and new. Modeling activities were also very impactful because for example, the jelly cell models were super cool. I was learning while I was having fun which is a really important way for me to learn. It was yummy and I did it by myself which meant I was learning a lot. It was memorable too since it’s my first time doing something like this and it tasted great. I’m a learner that really like hand-on activities as it helps me feel positive and happy while learning.

If I could improve one part of my learning in this unit I would try to receive an L3 without needing to resubmit. I want to do that because I need to resubmit on some things. I sometimes don’t meet the standard and it’s really sad. In the future I will work extra hard and triple check my work to make it meet the standard.

Social Studies Unit 2: Essay

The steps I went through to write this essay was I first researched all the information I needed and put it in a graphic organizer. Then, I started using the rubric and examples to write it in CER form. I got the feedback the teacher gave me and fixed it. One thing I did well on my essay was I wrote good evidence and I wrote in detail. I could use the information from my research to write this essay. I could also use the feedback from teachers and peers to fix my work. One thing I still need to learn to do is citations. I didn’t really cite it well and had some errors. I needed to use indirect and direct quotes better. I couldn’t put the citations in the right place and the parenthesis were also a bit wrong.

Unit 3 Math Reflection

In this unit I understood how to calculate all the percents and the change. I could do what the teacher wanted me to do and I met the requirements. I understood how to use this in real life examples and did the final project well.

Almost everything I learned this unit was new because I never really did percentages in my old school and only learned a bit in 5th and 6th grade. Something that was really new was calculating tax and discount because I never learned it before.

Something I found interesting in this unit was learning the percent change. I found the method interesting because I thought you had to calculate it differently and thought of it harder than it was supposed to be.

A tricky thing I found about this unit was calculating. When I had a calculator, the tests were very easy and I did good on them. When there was no calculator, I spent a lot of time calculating and didn’t get the best score. On my final summative I also got a calculation mistake with placing the decimal.

Artivist Piece

The title of my artworks/stickers is Climate Change and Stop Abuse.

The intended audience for “Climate Change” is everyone in this world because we all have the responsibility to protect animals and our world. We all need to do simple things to reduce climate change. The 2 different design strategies I used to make this even more meaningful is pathos because the dead polar bear mother is really sad showing sacrifices and simplicity since it’s just a few polar bears showing the message really clearly.

The intended audience for “Stop Abuse” is all the people that have been through this, the people who are doing this, and everyone that cares because abuse is not right and we need people to help this. The 2 different design strategies I used to make this even more meaningful is colour psychology because the whole artwork is black and white with a sudden pop of red showing anger and blood. The other design strategy I used is human faces because I drew the brows going down showing a sad and scared emotion. I also drew her eyes really dark showing despair.

Math Unit 2 Reflection

In this unit, I understood the problems about scale and copies. I understood how to find the scale factor and the perimeter and area with scale factor. I can make copies of different things that are to scale.

Some new things I learned was basically everything in this unit because before I didn’t know anything about scale factors or scale but now I understand everything I need to know. On my pretest I didn’t know a lot of things but on the final summative I could do almost every question.

Something I found interesting in this unit is the area. I thought we just had to find the area like normal and then multiply it by scale factor but it was actually multiply it by the scale factor squared. It was a little confusing at first but now it’s good.

Something I found tricky was finding lengths on maps and actual and real distances. I found it confusing with the CER and measuring as everyone got different answers and I couldn’t ask for help from peers. The actual length thing was also a bit confusing since I didn’t understand the formula and how it worked.

Art Reflection

How do your final clay piece and name drawing reflect different aspects of your identity (who you are)?

This is a room filled with dreams and cute things I like. It reflects me because I love the colour pink and want my dream room to be pink. I had clouds hanging from the top for the dreaming vibe. I have a teddy bear on the bed because I love collecting stuffies. Under my bed is a secret room for TV and gaming since I always wanted a secret room. Underneath that, is a room to store all the things I like. ( It looks like soccer balls but it’s just random things.)

My name reflects me because one day, my PE teacher wrote my name as Selna Loo and all my friends found it really funny. Later, they gave me all sorts of names and this one was my favourite. The symbols around it are cats, dogs, hearts, stars, music, and music notes. The reasons are that I love dogs and cats and have one. I like hearts and they’re one of my ways to express my feelings. Stars are pretty and makes me feel “I’m going to be a star.” Lastly, I love music SO much and singing is my passion.

How did you demonstrate persistence while creating these two works of art?

While doing my clay project, it was way too big and it kept on cracking. It broke many times and I couldn’t make the tiny furniture from my sketch because it was too small and I had no more time left. I persisted when I didn’t give up by filling up the cracks with glaze and only making the important furniture.

When I was making the name artwork, I misunderstood the instructions and thought the symbols didn’t have to interact with the name. I solved it because I connected the tail of the animals to my name and had cords connecting the microphone, hearts, and stars.

Social Studies Unit 1: Media Presentation

What are some pieces of feedback that you received and then incorporated into your work?

A piece of feedback that I received a lot was more eye contact and talk more fluent. I listened to the feedback and on the time of the actual presentation, I almost remembered the thing I’m supposed to say and made a lot of eye contact.

Explain 1 thing that you are proud of from this unit.
I’m proud about my video because I spent a lot of time editing it and making it interesting. I like how my script for the video was very persuading and had good language choices. I used media persuading tricks to let people buy the thing I want them to buy.

Explain 1 thing that you want to keep working on.
I want to work on making my analysis more long and structured. My analysis right now is a bit short and not as persuading as my video. It’s a bit messy and not formatted.

In your own words, explain what Bias is.

In my opinion, bias means when someone has a slanted point of view and like one part more than the other. They think the part they like is always correct even if they’re not. It’s prejustice for one group and most of the times, it’s unfair.

Explain 1 positive outcome of people having the same perspective might be.
I think something positive is that there will be less arguments and people will agree with each other. Also, people could support the side they are on together and work well.

Explain 1 negative outcome of people having the same perspective might be.

The negative outcome is that the part they support might be wrong and they still believe in it because others do too. The people might be tricked because they’re in the environment where everyone believes it.

Math Unit Reflection

In This unit, I understood how to use different methods to show my question for example using graphs, equations, descriptions, and tables. A new information I learned was the constant of proportionality. I learned how to find it and the meaning of it. Something I found interesting was graphing the question. It was fun when I learned about if the graph was proportional and how to find if it was proportional. Something I found tricky about this unit was writing equations. I’ve always struggled on equations and I always mixed up the x and the y. On my summative, I struggled a bit on calculating and me and my partner forgot to label somethings and made silly mistakes.
