Dystopian Fiction—The Giver

What did I do?

I learned about dystopian fiction by writing academic paragraphs + discussing topics related to the book:The Giver

What did I learn?

  • Building vocabulary
  • Writing academic paragraphs
  • Using transition words
  • Collaborative discussions

What worked?

Improving on academic paragraph worked well because at the start of the year, on Commonlit, I was not able to write a proper academic paragraph. However, now I can write a paragraph with evidence from the text.

What did not work?

Building vocabulary did not work well because I got a lot of them wrong during the vocabulary test.

Personal Relevance

This can help me because I can write with harder words and write academic parpgrphs.

Soccer Reflection

What did I learn?

I learned how to dirrlbe. I also learned how to play soccer and do goally.

What helped?

The cone and dribbling around it was helpful for me to practice dribbling. Being able to be in the role of everything during the match helped because I can experience other roles.

What am I proud of?

I am proud of being able to do differnet roles and steal balls and pass it to my teammate. I am proud that my dribbling and passing skill increased quite a lot.

What did I work on?

I worked on increasing my dribble skill and passing. I did it by dribbling around the cones and practiced passing by doing the drill when I pass the ball to the other person and that person shoot. I also practiced on shooting.

Unit II – Ötzi Unit Reflection

What did I work on?

I worked on the KWL chart, CER paragraph, and open and closed questions. On the KWL chart, I wrote what I know and wrote what I wondered, and when it was almost the end of the unit, I answered my wonderings that I wrote. For the closed and open questions, I learned how to write them and what they are.

What did I learn?

I learned and researched more about Ötzi. I earned why some scientists think that he was murdered. It was because of the arrowhead in his artery and him dying because of blood loss. I also learned why some of the scientists think he is not murdered. They said that he died because of the health issues that he had, and the poisoned plant he ate.

What worked well?

Researching about the arrowhead for mock trial worked well.  I was able to learn new things about the arrowhead and write detailed about the information I got. Some of the new information I learned was that the artery’s name is Subclavian artery, and the arrowhead went 2.6 cm into the artery.

What did not work?

I could work on saying more things during the trial. I can do this by writing more things in my notecards and practicing more. I can also be more confident when I am talking. I can be more confident also by practicing more and guessing questions the lawyer might ask and preparing answers for them.

Personal Relevance

Collaboration and Communication was very important because me and my partner sometimes had to share ideas. During the trial, we had to take turns talking and had to answer some of the questions for the partner when she didn’t know how to answer. We also had to ask the Lawyers to clarify or restate the question, which was also when communication was important.

Striking and fielding Reflection

What did we do?

We played Big base, T-ball, and kick ball.

What did I do good?

I did well on t-ball because I was able to strike the ball far and where I want to strike on. (like place where there is no one fielding)

What should I work on?

I should work on my fielding. Because when I field I miss the ball kind of often.

Volleyball Reflection

  1. I made sure that I stand behind the line and made a fist, then I bumped up and forward. I think I did well on standing behind the line and not going accros
  2. I control it by making sure my arm is not pointing other way
  3. It was hard to make the ball go over the net and I tried to improve it by making the ball go forward

PE table tennis unit reflection

I learned how to serve fast

I improved on my serve

It was good because I got to play table tennis with my friends. Also I was able to make new friends when I was playing “King of the Court”

I faced challenge on receiving the fast balls

I look forward to next years table tennis because I like to play table tennis and it will be more fun if I play with other students.

I wish I did better on bouncing ball quickly

I’m proud that I became the Queen once

Math reflection

What did we do?

We made food and calculated the ingridients into grams.

What did we learn?

We learned how to calculate things into one thing. For example, we changed cups into grams so it will be easier.

What worked?

I am proud of the calculation we did because we were able to bring right amount of food because we calculated it right. Also we did well on dividing our roles during the sale.

What did not work?

We ran out of food too quickly so we should have prepare more than that.

Personal Relevance

When I bake or make food later, then we will be able to make it more easily because I know how to choose the price and I also know how to get the ingredients.

Egg Car

What did I do?

I built a egg car using four A4 paper, 1m tape, and wheel. we built a car that can save the egg when it crashes on a brick.

What did I learn?

I learned things that can prevent the egg from cracking when the car hits the brick. For example, the seatbelt can help with the egg flying out of the car because of the 1st Law. And the paper in the box helped absorbing some of the force.

What worked?

The seatbelt worked well to prevent the egg from flying. And the paper bag helped the egg to stop a little bit so that it won’t get too much force.

What did not work?

the crumple zone didn’t really work because it didn’t help to make the egg bounce and get less force.

Personal Relevance

My design had the crumple zone, seatbelt, and the little paper bag. Most of them worked well but the crumple zone was a little weak.

Balloon Car

What did I do?

The Balloon Car was built using straw, tape, plate, balloon, and bottle caps. We used it to learn about Newton’s 3rd Law.

What did I learn?

Newton’s 1st law says that the object in motion tends to stay at motion and object in rest tends to stay at rest. Unless an unbalanced force acts on it. We see this law in action with the Balloon Car when it moves with the force of the air but stops when it touches somewhere like doors or a table.

Newton’s 2nd law says the greater the mass is, the more force it needs. We see this law in action with the Balloon Car when we put the metal thing on the Balloon Car, the more it has, it is slower and it needs more air.

Newton’s 3rd law says every action has a reaction. We see this law in action with the Balloon Car when the it touches the door or the table, it moves back a little bit because of the 3rd law.

What worked?

Working with my partner Claire worked well because we had good communication and we collaborated well together. We had to take turn doing things and agreeing with doing something.

What did not work?

I struggled when the car fell forward. To solve this problem, we put the metal thing at the middle of the car, so the car won’t fall.

Personal Relevance

The balloon Car was like Rocket in the real world, when I let the air out, it went to the opposite direction the air was going out and the rocket also blast off also by using the air coming out from the bottom. I see Newton’s 2nd Law when I go to a market and I need more force to push the cart when there is more things in the cart. It is important to know these Law because, Newton’s law helps us to know things that we don’t know about or curious about. Also it helps us to understand things well. When I do things like pushing the cart, I might not know about the 2nd law and keep pushing it in the same force. But if I know what Newton’s 2nd Law is, I can easily solve those problem.
