Unit 2 Reflection & Semester Check-In

This portfolio post has 2 parts:

  1. Reflection on your Unit 2 Celebration of Learning
  2. End-of-Semester Goal Review & New Goal Setting

Part 1: Unit 2 Topic A and B Test Reflection (Functions & Statistics)

A. Evidence of Your Best Thinking

I chose Question 5c as evidence of my best thinking because I am able to clearly describe the residual plot will look like for the scatter plot presented.

I chose Question 7a as evidence of my best thinking because it clearly demonstrates that I am able to explain the meaning of the slope and y-intercept in context.

B. Skills Reflection

Throughout Unit 2, I improved the most at understanding the concepts and being able to apply these concepts using real world scenarios. For example, I was able to design a real world story where it involved baking cookies and how oven preheating time affects the final size of a cookie. I used Mia, a baker at Crumbl Cookies, to represent someone collecting data and noticing patterns. The changing cookie diameter over time was represented using a piecewise function because the rate of change was not constant.

One skill from this unit that I still need to work on better identifying the characteristics of a scatter plot because on my CoL, I was unable to clearly identify all the characteristics where I missed out writing some of the outliers that appeared.

The biggest challenge for me on this assessment was clearly identifying all outliers. I was unable to recognize some of the outliers on certain scatter plots causing my description for a scatter plot to be inaccurate.

One strategy that helped me on this test was to memorize the template for writing descriptions for scatter plots. The method of DOTS really helped me to fully remember all parts to consider while writing my description, such as direction, outliers, trends, strengths.

        Part 2: Goal Reflection & End-of-Semester Check-In

        A. Looking Back at Your Last Goal

Last unit, you set this goal: I want to better provide clear reasoning to support my thinking to show my understanding of the concepts.

How well did you work toward this goal?
☐ Very well ✅ Somewhat ☐ I struggled with this

What helped you make progress toward this goal?

By clearly listening while the teacher explains the process and fully understanding why and how the formula or method works. Moreover, by creating clear explanations for homework to practice this skill.

            B. End-of-Semester Self Reflection

List three strengths you have shown last semester: Organization where I was able to submit all work on time, always paying attention in class, and collaborating well during group projects.

List three areas you still want to improve: Being more active during class discussions, taking more detailed and organized notes during lessons, constantly reviewing concepts or formulas learned in class.

                C. New Academic Goal Moving Forward

In the next unit I want to work on taking more detailed notes and constantly reviewing these notes.

What might get in the way of this goal?

A main challenge that might get in the way of my goal could be forgetting to review my notes regularly and also missing out important parts mentioned in class due to distractions.

What will I do if I get stuck or need help?

If I get stuck or need help, I will ask my teacher questions during or after class for clarification. I can also compare my notes with a classmate to make sure I did not miss anything important. Additionally, I will use schoology lessons or other online resources to help me better understand the material.

Reflection: Designing a Story Problem – Piecewise Function Project

My story modeled a real-life situation involving baking cookies and how oven preheating time affects the final size of a cookie. I used Mia, a baker at Crumbl Cookies, to represent someone collecting data and noticing patterns. The changing cookie diameter over time was represented using a piecewise function because the rate of change was not constant. This reflects real life, since many situations change differently over different time intervals rather than following one simple rule.

I am most proud of how I connected the story to the math by accurately representing the different behaviors of the cookie diameter in each time interval. Each section of the piecewise function matched a specific part of the story.

The hardest part was deciding where each interval should start and end and making sure the graph matched the story correctly. Another challenging point was making sure the function stayed continuous and reflected real world behaviors.

If I could revise one part of the project, I would improve the precision of the data points by clearly defining exact values for each time interval. This would make the graph and equations even more accurate. I would also add more explanation on why the cookie diameter decreases after too much preheating to strengthen the real-world connection.

This project helped me understand that piecewise functions are useful for modeling real-life situations where behavior changes over time. I learned how different equations can represent different patterns within the same problem.

Health Unit 3: Identity and Healthy Relationships

                        Health Love Story Analysis 2.0.mp4

The purpose of the project was to discover some characteristics of relationships on media that show an unhealthy or healthy relationship. Through my analysis on the song Long Story by Taylor Swift, I was able to be aware of gender stereotypes, consent, and traits of healthy and unhealthy characteristics throughout the lyrics, concluding that the lyrics could influence young listeners to misunderstand what a healthy relationship is and what it should look like.

Through the unit, there were several important ideas that I learned about identity and healthy relationships. For example, I learned that giving consent means to say yes with enthusiasm, when someone is forced to say yes to something or doesn’t say no, that doesn’t mean consent is given. Moreover, media platforms form gender stereotypes to better advertise their products. Instead, we should break these stereotypes like blue for boys and pink for girls. Lastly, another idea that I learned some green flags are that both people give consent to each other, respect each others’ boundaries, and having good communication between each other.

                        PE Reflection

                        🏊

Through the swimming unit, I was able to learn how to play waterpolo. At the beginning, I didn’t understand the rules and wasn’t able to pass a ball while swimming. However, as the unit went through, I was able to learn how to pass and catching with one hand.

                        ⚽️

Through the outside invasion games unit, I was able to practice skills on soccer such as dodging and dribbling. At first, I struggled to run with a ball and wasn’t confident passing the ball. However, throughout the unit, I was able to practice these skills and I was able to pass during the games.

                        Health Unit 2 Reflection

                        I used to think

Before this unit, I used to think that mental health only referred to emotional concerns such as depression, anxiety, and addiction. I believed mental health was mainly about how people felt rather than how they thought or functioned in their daily lives. I also assumed that mental health conditions were mostly caused by personal experiences or individual choices, without realizing how many factors actually contribute to them.

                        But now I think

After learning more in this unit, I’ve come to understand that mental health is complex and deeply connected to our biology, environment, relationships, and even society. Mental health conditions affect how people think, act, and function day to day. As I specifically researched about addiction, I have gained understanding that mental health conditions could have been caused by social media platforms and that their are a lot of stereotypes of mental health concerns. Moreover, I have realized that many social media platforms normalize many of the mental health conditions, causing people to misunderstand the complexity of mental health.

Learning about the psychological and social aspects of addiction, like how trauma, stress, or isolation can increase the risk, has helped me see how important compassion and support are in recovery. What surprised me most was realizing how stigma makes it harder for people to seek help. Instead of creating these judgements, people dealing with addiction need understanding and access to treatment. I now see mental health as important as physical health, and I recognize that supporting people diagnosed to mental health is crucial.

                        Health WOOP Goal Portfolio

                        Baseline📝

I think that I will able to use Habitica to achieve my goal on turning in assignments one day before the due date and completing homework the night it was assigned by making a todo list to write down my assignments and the deadline and notifying me a day before it is due to complete it.

                        3 measurable outcome📊

                        1. No overdue assignments
                        2. Turned assignments the day is it assigned
                        3. Less time on social media causing procrastination

My baseline wellness metrics are to decrease the time spent on social media which have been causing procrastination and to increase sleep hours daily to ensure my mental and physical wellbeing.

                        Multimedia Analysis and Review📈

                        Functionality⚙️

Habitica helps me create a todo list of all the homework or projects that are upcoming and notify me when it is one day before the due date which is relevant to my goal of turning in assignments one day before the due date and completing homework the night it was assigned.

The features of my app that I use the most is the todo list that allows me to write down the assignment and add a due date to notify me since it can help with my goal . The feature I use the least is the feature where it lists my bad habits down with a plus and minus sign on its other two sides, however, I don’t really understand the purpose of this function since it doesn’t provide any support in order to allow me to remove this bad habit.

The app’s promises are that it is a habit-building and productivity app that uses retro RPG elements to gamify your tasks and goals. My actual experience on using this app are similar with the promises where the app gamify my tasks and goals by adding a character like a pet that you are completing your tasks to level up. Through this app, it does help me become more productive as it mentioned in the promises, however, i think that the habit-building section wasn’t really clear in the app and that the feature provided for that section didn’t really help with removing a bad habit nor building new positive habits.

Some limitations of the app is that is doesn’t create a calendar that can tell me the due date for everyday allowing me to see a clear overview of my work that are due. Moreover, another limitation is where it doesn’t clearly present the different difficultly levels. During my use of the app, I found out that the users are able to change the difficulty level they indicate for the task they add into their personal todo list. However, this function was further developed to make it presented more clearly, with different difficulty levels, there weren’t any specific signs or signals that indicated it and was really confusing for users.

                        Usefulness📱

Overall, throughout the use of my app, I was able to submit most work on time and decrease my time on social media due to increased focus while working on homework. My hypothesis was able mostly supported by evidence, since it was only about a two week trail, I am still continuing to use this app and to help me eventually fully reach my goal.

While Habitica helped me stay organized and turn in assignments on time, an unintended consequence was that I became overly focused on checking off tasks just to earn rewards in the app. This sometimes shifted my focus from genuinely engaging with the work to completing it quickly for the sake of progress in the game. Additionally, I occasionally spent extra time customizing my avatar or checking rewards instead of doing the actual homework, which slightly reduced my productivity.

Habitica may work best for students or individuals who enjoy gaming and visual motivation. Its gamified features, like leveling up and earning in-game rewards, appeal to people who are motivated by competition or progress tracking. However, for older adults or people who prefer simplicity, the RPG theme might feel childish or overly complicated, causing ineffectiveness for completing their work.

The app’s use of gamification to strongly encourages continued use, adding elements like earning experience points, leveling up, and collecting rewards. These elements are beneficial because they help users stay motivated and create consistency in habit tracking. However, they can also be somewhat manipulative since they rely on reward-seeking behavior similar to video games, which might cause users to become dependent on external motivation.

Habitica makes money primarily through optional in-app purchases and premium subscriptions that allow users to access additional customization, pets, and cosmetic items. This business model encourages the developers to design the app in a way that keeps users engaged long-term and motivated to buy visual upgrades or premium features.

Habitica has the potential to help users build healthy habits by linking positive actions to rewards and visual progress. However, because it relies heavily on external reinforcement like the points, coins, levels, it can also create dependency where users may feel less motivated to complete tasks without the app’s gamified feedback.

Unit 1: First Contact Learning Reflection

What did I learn about language, communication, or writing through this unit?

Through the first unit, I learned about the different parts of speech and gained a deeper understanding in grammar allowing to use it in my future learning and to use the right grammar even when communicating to make sure I am presenting the correct idea. Moreover, I learned about using precise language specifically learning about connotation and denotation, where I was able to find where my alien used both connotation and denotation in its paragraph and explain the meaning of both connotation and denotation.

Which piece best shows my growth so far this year?

The notes that I prepared for my piece best shows my growth so far, it helped me truly gain a deep understanding in connotation and denotation. Through this piece, it shows my learning and my work on understanding a new concept and my progress through the project.

                        Health Unit 1 Synthesis Reflection

How has learning about brain science impacted your understanding of your own behavior?

By learning about the brain science, it allows me to think before I act since I understand now that because my pre-frontal cortex isn’t as developed, I might make decisions depending on my emotions over thinking. Next time, before I react to something, I would calm my emotions and think about the impact if I did a certain reaction.

What was the most surprising thing you learned about the teenage brain?

Something that was most surprising that I learned about the teen brain is that the teen brain develops from the back to the front which causes the pre-frontal cortex to develop at a later age and the amygdala to me more active during the teenage period.

How might understanding the teen brain improve communication and relationships between teens and adults?

By understanding that the sometimes the amygdala and undeveloped pre-frontal cortex is causing teens to react more emotionally can help parents to better understand that sometimes when their child have strong emotions, it might be because of an strongly active amygdala. Sometime teens act more emotional because of their FFF being triggered when handling stress and this is important to let parents to know in order to understand that teens can get stressed more easily than adults.

Which stress management strategies do you think would be most helpful for you personally? How could you envision incorporating them into your schedule?

I think personally I like to excerise because it can help me release stress and get hyped up. This is also part of my schedule which is to excerise daily in order to help my own well being and at the same time help to release my stress and stress management.
