Math Unit 2 Reflection: “Designing a Story Problem” (Piecewise Function Project)

L4: Designing Your Own Problem Project

Describe your story and what real-life situation it modeled?
My story was about a person who started working, and their annual salary over the years.

What part of your project are you most proud of? Why?
The part of my project I was most proud of was the part where we had to show all our work, as I included a detailed explanation and an extension part for the L4.

What was the hardest part of creating your piecewise function?
The hardest part about creating the story was creating a story with numbers that made sense and was easy to graph.

If you could revise one part of this project, what would you improve and how?
If I could revise one part of my project, I would make my work neater and easier to see.

What did this project help you understand better about piecewise functions?

This project helped me understand the traits of a piecewise function, and how they are used in real-life situations.

Orchestra Winter Concert:

For this year’s winter concert for orchestra, we play the pieces:
• Carol of the Bells (Violin 1)
• Author/composer: Mykola Leontovych (orig. Ukrainian melody) with English lyrics by Peter J. Wilhousky
• Key: Commonly performed in E minor or G minor in orchestral/band arrangements; some editions use modal interpretations
• Time signature: Primarily 3/4 (though some arrangements treat internal motifs with feel that suggests a 6/8 subdivision)
• Overture to Lucio Silla (Violin 1)
• Author/composer: Wolfgang Amandeus Mozart
• Key: The overture commonly performed in B-flat major or C major depending on edition
• Time signature: 4/4
Throughout this year, we learned different dynamics like spicatto and stacatto.

Health Unit 3 Reflection: Identity and Health Relationships

In this unit, we learned gender stereotypes in different types of relationships. We learned that men are typically characterized as the financial provider, while women are typically characterized as a maternal figure. Then, we learned how to identify healthy and unhealthy characteristics in relationships. Then, we did an analysis on a relationship we chose, and my group chose Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina.

Swimming/Water Polo Reflection

For the swimming unit, I learned how to float on the water and different strokes. For the water polo part of the unit, I learned how to dribble the ball in water and how to shoot. For next time, I think I could work on my active learner as sometimes I did not come with my swimming kit.

Soccer Unit Reflection

During the soccer unit, I learned how to dribble the ball and shoot the ball well. I improved on my ball control and my ability to work together as a team to score and win the game. However, for next time, I think I could work on my sportsmanship.

Unit 2: Socratic Seminar Reflection

I picked this artifact to show a quote that I said during the seminar during 24:37. I picked this artifact because it shows how I connect my ideas to others and move the flow of the conversation in a positive way. This shows my ability as a communicator to be able to continue a conversation with clear ideas.

Health Unit 2 Reflection

For Unit 2 health, we learned about how social media impacts mental and physical health. Then, we learned about a social media’s negativity bias and how certain platforms use algorithms to negatively portray minorities in society, and how these negative stereotypes could lead to various mental health disorders. Next, we looked at a thought pattern that happened commonly as a result of social media.

Then, we chose a mental health disorder to explain to people about with our table. My table chose anxiety disorder, and we focused on generalized, panic, and social anxiety to explain. To meet standards, we had to include an overview, symptoms, causes, impact on daily life, media portrayal, and stigma (a negative stereotype in society that leads to discrimination and prejudice).

How My Thinking Changed:

Throughout this unit, my thinking changed as I originally thought that social media was just a small part of society and barely left any impact, but as the unit progressed, I learned how almost everybody in the entire world suffers from negative emotions after going on social media, and how various mental health disorders happen or worsen from it. This helped me realize that the cause of my stress was increasing from social media, not decreasing, and I learned that health disorders are not only physical, but also mental, and often, these mental health disorders are not visible, and it is important to treat everybody with respect because we do not know what they may be going through.
