Part 2: Goal Reflection & End-of-Semester Check-In

A. Looking Back at Your Last Goal

Last unit, you set this goal:Applying geometric concepts to real-world problems Understanding proofs and theorems in geometry. Working with coordinate geometry

How well did you work toward this goal?
 Somewhat successful

What helped you make progress toward this goal?

Additional math classes and learning more overall about various topics in math.

List three strengths you have shown last semester:

Problem solving, logical thinking, and understanding mathematical concepts

List three areas you still want to improve:

Explanation of answers, solving decimals, and understanding geometrics better in general

In the next unit I want to explain my answers better and try get a better score in math

What might get in the way of this goal? Lack of explanations and forgetting to add on extra detail

What will I do if I get stuck or need help? Ill ask a teacher on how I could explain my answer on difficult questions

Unit 2 Topic A and B Test Reflection

I chose Question 4.b as evidence of my best thinking because it clearly shows how I had a strong understanding of the slope and linear relations. This question demonstrated how I used extrapolation to calculate the predicted kg of lemons it would be.

I chose Question 7.a as evidence of my best thinking because in this question, I was able to correctly identify the Y intercept and what it means in this situation of piano and its relevance between academic music scores.

Throughout Unit 2, I improved the most at learning more in depth about linear and the best possible line of fit

One skill from this unit that I still need to work on is explaining my work when solving mathematical equations, as even when I get the answer correct I get partials due to lack of explanations.

The biggest challenge for me on this assessment was trying to explain my work.

One strategy that helped me on this test was by trying to make the line of best fit as accurate as possible.

        DT Robotics Reflection

During our robotics unit, Mr. Hatt assigned us a partner to work with for the whole entire project. We started by re-designing the base bot with a better gear ratio to speed up the bot.(Sumo Wrestling). After this, we changed the bot back again to a base bot and added on different types of claws. After this, we did a small competition with 4 people in 1 team of trying to bring as many cubes/boxes on a ramp to gain points. Our team(Ayan, Siwoo, Natalie, Myles) ended up scoring 9 points, which was one of the highest in our class. In conclusion, this unit taught us basic robotics and a bit of coding.

        DT Box Reflection

For our Box project, we first chose a design movement to use for our box. After that, we drew 3 prototype designs that could be used in our real box. Mr.Hatt reviewed all 3 drawings and chose one that would best fit for my box design. After this process, we had to use a exacto knife and cut out a foam prototype that had precise measurements(Scaled). Using the foam prototype and the chosen art deco drawing, I started to put everything in portfolio to prepare for the wooden tissue box, and finally cut out the box from 4mm plywood and coloured it in 2 different colours; Silver and Gold

        Health Class U3 Reflection

The purpose of the project we did was to learn about unhealthy/healthy relationships, and how to identify the traits of them. Throughout the unit, we did this project by choosing a movie/song that had a healthy/unhealthy relation. In conclusion, my relation I chose between Katniss and Peeta was unhealthy.

Some things I learned about healthy relationships is that they need equal power, open communication, and finally none sterotypical gender roles.

Unit 2 Portfolio: Reflection on Learning

Before learning about mental health, I used to think that it was just conditions that had no affect in real life. A misconception I had about mental health was that mental illness is a sign of personal weakness or character flaw. I thought individuals with mental health conditions can simply “snap out of it” or that they should be able to control their symptoms through willpower alone.

After learning more, I realized that mental health is very important and affects many people. I learned that mental illnesses are real medical conditions caused by different factors, like genetics and environment. They are not just in someone’s head or a sign of weakness. It’s important to understand that people with mental health issues need support and treatment, just like those with physical health problems. I personally think my mindset changed because of my friend with a mental disorder, and I was really close to him.

Furthermore, getting to see other groups projects deepened my understanding about diverse mental disorders such as addiction, Eating disorders, PTSD, ETC.

        Semester 1 Active Learner Reflection

Im most proud in science for learning about different science concepts such as sound travel, radiometric dating, fossils, and natural selection. These lessons were really fascinating as I dived deeper learning.

The biggest challenge in science is staying on task and coming to the class on time.

Next semester I want to have no missing assignments, all 3 on 3 for 3s, and never be late to class

        “New Goal: 10/16
A new goal I am looking forward to achieve is always having a positive attitude. Recently I’ve had a bit of a negative attitude due to my lip injury and tiredness, but now I will try to percieve through these challenges, having a bit more positive attitude. To achive this goal, I will take specfic actions such as reminding myself of stopping negative thought. Previous Goal: 8/27 This year, I want to improve at completing my science assignments on time. I’ve noticed that distractions sometimes stop me from finishing work, especially when I’m at home or working on something that takes longer. To fix this, I will create a set time each school night to work on science without any tech distractions, like my phone or games. I’ll also start using a planner or checklist to track due dates and make sure I’m not forgetting anything. If I ever feel like I’m falling behind, I’ll talk to my science teacher before the due date instead of waiting too long. I want to be more responsible and stay on top of my assignments so I can learn better and not feel stressed at the last minute and also improve my grades.

Previous Goal Status: I think I achieved this goal. Most of the time during the semester, I was able to keep track of my work and submit assignments on time. On rare occasions(Once per month) I needed to be reminded to submit a missing assignment.”

        Health: WOOP goals

Based on my WOOP goal, the app Offscreen will help me accomplish it. Offscreen is a focus management app that combines screen time limiting with structured focus sessions. The app sets a daily screen time limit of 4 hours and offers pre-set focus activities including meditation, working, reading, and studying, each with 25-minute timers using the Pomodoro Technique.

Before using this app, I had an average screen time of 8 hours(Including school computer use). My homework efficiency was low; If i started at 6 and wanted to end it at 7,

3 measurable outcomes I want to see is improvement in time management, self control, and less procrastination.

My wish while doing this project was managing time to do homework. When we first started, I was bad at managing time and got distracted easily, having less time to actually efficiently work.

The core feature of the app I’m using, study time, can help me focus as it restricts the use of other apps. A feature I use the most is checking my screen time on the app. However, unlike the apps promise, it isn’t the best at managing my screen time strictly. A main flaw of the app is that I can increase my screen time by adding 1 or 15 minutes and no restriction for the day at all.

During the initial days of testing, Offscreen showed promise in helping me limit my screen time, which was directly related to my WOOP goal of managing time for homework and reducing distractions; the app lowered my screen time to an average of 4 hours per day during the first 3-4 days of using this app.

However, this app has clear limitations; It’s restrictions aren’t that strong, and it has a critical glitch where it doesn’t restrict your screen time when you don’t check the app and give it time to load.

Self-control showed mixed results during testing. While the app initially helped reduce my screen time, I found myself using the 1-minute and 15-minute extension features, which gradually undermined the app’s effectiveness. These extensions, combined with the discovery that I could avoid restrictions by not opening the app, revealed that Offscreen requires a baseline level of self-control that I didn’t consistently maintain.

Offscreen’s effectiveness appears limited across different user types. The app requires users to have a certain level of pre-existing self-control to be successful, which creates a paradox: those who most need help with screen time management (like myself) may lack the self-discipline necessary to use the app effectively. Users who already possess strong self-control might find the app helpful, but they may not need such intervention in the first place.

My hypothesis was refuted by evidence showing that Offscreen’s design flaws and reliance on user self-discipline made it ineffective for sustained behavior change. While I achieved a 50% screen time reduction (from 8 to 4 hours) during the first 3 days, the combination of easily accessible extensions, the ability to bypass restrictions by not opening the app, and my own tendency to use these workarounds ultimately prevented the app from supporting my WOOP goal of better time management for homework.

The extension buttons (1-minute and 15-minute) demonstrate a problematic design choice that undermines the app’s stated purpose. While using these extensions made me feel guilty, this emotional response was insufficient to prevent continued use of the workaround features. This suggests the app’s design prioritizes user retention over genuine behavior change – by providing easy escape routes, Offscreen reduces user frustration but also eliminates the meaningful friction necessary for developing self-control.

Offscreen did increase my awareness of screen time habits, which represents a positive design outcome. However, the app failed to create consistent engagement – I didn’t check it daily, which ultimately enabled the discovery of its critical flaw. This inconsistent usage pattern reveals a design weakness: the app doesn’t create compelling reasons for daily interaction, making it easy for users to avoid accountability.

The app’s design creates a false sense of control while actually enabling the behaviors it claims to restrict. The combination of guilt-inducing but ineffective extensions, easy circumvention through avoidance, and lack of engaging daily features suggests Offscreen prioritizes user comfort over genuine wellness outcomes. Rather than building sustainable habits, the design encourages users to find workarounds, ultimately reinforcing the problematic behaviors it was meant to address.
