PE: Badminton Unit Reflection

In this PE unit, we learned badminton skills such as serving, the drop shot, and the clear shot.

The drop shot is useful because it forces my opponent to hit the birdie higher in the air, which gives me an advantage and a chance to smash the birdie and score a point.

The clear shot is often used to counter a drop shot, hitting the birdie far at the back of the court to give my opponents a disadvantage of having to run to the back of the court to catch the birdie.

I improved my backhand serve using advice from a teacher which was to hit the birdie straight instead of up, to make the serve more likely to score a point.

I also improved my collaboration skills, as some badminton drills required me to work together to help my partner practice, and to have my partner help me practice.

MATH: Unit 3 Percentages

In Unit 3 of Grade 7 Math, we gained an understanding of percentages and how we can use percentages in math to calculate taxes, tips, profits, interest rates, and discounts.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Technologies Impact Essay

In Unit 2 of Social Studies, we studied different communication and transportation technologies and their impact on society. We wrote an essay about the technology we chose and how its impact has affected the world as a society.

I wrote the hook of the essay pretty well, as I provided a modern-day strong negative impact of the Internet on society. I also chose strong evidence that clearly explained why my claim mattered.

According to Mr. Tyner, (a reliable source:) I have to work on essay structure and reasoning. For essay structuring, there was some information I left out of one paragraph, and I just had to use it as the introduction sentence of the new paragraph. For reasoning, I had to go EVEN deeper into explaining why my evidence matters in this exact context.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Technology Impact Project

For Unit 2 for Grade 7 Social Studies, we made a visual presentation to showcase our learning of different types of communication and transportation technology.

I did my project on the World Wide Web or The Internet. For my Visual Presentation, I made a digital drawing animation video. I chose to do this for my project because of my inspiration from Studio Ghibli and their 100% hand-drawn frames. I admired Studio Ghibli’s rejection of AI art and the revolution of AI “creativity”.

One Thing I Did Well
One thing I did well on this project was I successfully showcased my learning of the Internet and its impact through the making of a hand-drawn video. The animation was surprisingly smooth and I spoke well during my presentation. Over this semester, I think I’ve improved in speaking more confidently, clearly, and slowly when I present my work.

One Thing I Need To Work On
I need to work on time management for this project, as animating is a very time-consuming activity. I feel like I spent too much time outside of school for this project, especially considering I was asked to help somebody else with her project.

LANGUAGE ARTS: Unit 2 Summatives

How do you think those summatives compared to your formatives?
I think I achieved a much more successful outcome on the summative CERER assessment than the formative CERER assessment. I had a more developed understanding of characters and conflict when I did the second one, as I scored a more successful grade.

In this summative, I showcased my learning about

ART CLASS: Digital Artivist Piece

The title of the sticker series is What Have We Done? Individually, the stickers are called Nature Protects, Where Did You Go? Just A Tree, and Repainting.

The intended audience is for everybody. For governments and companies, the artwork could mean spending more time and money in reducing what they have done to nature and the environment. For students and children, it could mean taking action in small acts of kindness, slowly reawakening the spirit of nature.

Specifically for Where Did You Go? and Just A Tree, another message is telling everybody the reality of what we are doing to reality.

Specifically for Repainting, the main message is that we should work together to reawaken nature and heal nature before we hurt the environment too much.

A few design strategies I used were Color Psychology, Use of Icons, Repetition and familiarity.

I used Color Psychology in all of the pictures. The green trees in all the stickers convey emotions of calmness, relief, and protection. This gives the audience an idea that nature is our natural protector and we must work to protect it too.

I added many colors in Just A Tree to symbolize the variety of life that we are hurting by harming trees. This highlights the urgency of the fact that we need to support nature more and focus more on environmental concerns.

In Where Did You Go? the girl’s light pink dress and ribbon symbolizes her innocence as she sees a tall tree. In the other half of the picture, when she sees the same tree as an adult, her black ribbons symbolizes her sadness and she sees nature slowly dying. The repetition of the girl’s features show that she is still the same girl, the same protective soul that once gazed upon the glorious tree.

LA: Unit 2 Formative #2 (CERER on Dystopian Characteristics)

  1. I made an improvement on my knowledge on the characteristics of dystopian fiction characteristics, for example, on alternate universes and connecting dystopian behaviors with everyday life.
  2. I tried to follow the rubric, but I forgot some properties of punctuation in english, so I didn’t fill the requirements for the grammar part.
  3. According to the comments, I did my reasoning particularly well.
  4. If I were to redo this assignment, I would have to practice my grammatical conventions more thoroughly.
  5. I think I would have to use the CERER to refine my claim, and the punctuation convention bot to refine my punctuation and grammatical errors.
  6. I will have to review ALL the slides on punctuation and do all of the practice sentences to refine future conventions.
  7. I will improve of the Active Learner skill of repeated practice over the certain skill that I lack in CERER, which is punctuation.

ART: Clay and Graffiti

How does your final clay piece reflect different aspects of your identity (who you are)?
My clay project is called Can’t Live Without You. It symbolizes two aspect of my emotions, one being pure thoughts and joy, and the other being anger and negative feelings. This project shows how the two sides of my personality cannot exist without each other, for example, something positive happening in my life always heals something negative. The main theme for my project is how the light and dark of somebody’s thoughts can heal each other, and one cannot exist without the other.

How did you demonstrate persistence while creating this work of art?
At first, my design was called ‘over-complicated’ and it was very difficult to sculpt the different parts and attach them, constantly using the ‘score, slip, blend’ technique to create the project. I had to face a decision to stop halfway through my project and change my entire project, but I was really passionate about this project and persevered through the challenges using the art techniques I learned in class.

How does your final graffiti piece reflect different aspects of your identity (who you are)?
In this graffiti piece, I included icons of my hobbies, such as goggles for swimming and a pencil for art. I also included vibrant colours to represent my bright and extroverted personality, and a starry background with deeper colours to represent the dreamy and imaginative aspect of my personality.

How did you demonstrate persistence while creating this work of art?
Graffiti using posca markers was kind of challenging, since mistakes couldn’t be erased. Most of this artwork creation process was experimenting different sketches and improvising when I made mistakes,

PE: Volleyball Unit Reflection

In this unit, we learned the basics of volleyball, using skills of underhand serve, bumping, and setting. To maintain control of the ball, I kept my focus on the ball and had the thought of always being ready to run for the ball and defend it using two-hand volley skills. To improve my 2-hand volley skills, I can practice using rally with a partner. My position on the court helped me improve my 2-hand volley because when I was closer to the net, (setter position) it was easier to defend from volleyballs that fell close to the net.
