Functionality:
How does the app work?
The app I chose for my WOOP goal was BePresent. Be present is an app where you limit your screen time in a fun manner. In the app you first chose your goal for how many hours of screen time you want to stay bellow, everyday if you stay under the screen time you build your streak and gain experience points. You can also place specific limits for opens on different apps and how long they can be oppened for. And finally you can also chose which apps to not count for the screen time or app limits. The app is very easy to use because it only requires around 15 minutes to set up once and then there is no need to even visit it during the day because it runs in the background. Some of the more advanced features include the groups where you can connect multiple people and keep eachother acountable for the group streak as well as the leaderboard.
How does it support my WOOP goal?
The app BePresent supports my WOOP goal by helping me limit my screen time and there fore increase sleep. In my WOOP goal I mentioned that screen time was one of the main issues surrounding my sleep therefore I found an app that limits my screentime but also is fun and makes me want to refrain from using my phone and not only restricting me.
How does it impact my mental health?
The app I chose can significantly impact our mental health as it has the ability to block apps that are not too good for us and it can also restrict our screen time to ensure more sleep and time spent on other activities that may improve mental health which are not on our phones.
How does it build healthy habits?
The app BePresent promotes healthy habits by restricting screen time, which is vital for improving both sleep quality and duration. It motivates users to develop self-regulation and accountability by providing an urge to remain below the set screen time limits. The app also allows users to block specific apps, as well as socialize with other people in groups, which allows for a supportive environment that encourages less technology usage which leads to a better mental health.
How does this build stress resilience?
Moreover, by reducing screen time and fostering healthier technology habits, users can cultivate stress resilience. Less time spent on potentially distressing content, such as social media or news, allows for more engagement in activities that promote relaxation and well-being, such as exercise, reading, or socializing offline.
Does this use humane design or addictive design?
I think that this app is not very addictive but has some addictive aspects to it, like the streak sections of the app where you might be pulled into the app every day if you are very involved. On the other hand, the app is humane because it has many positive benefits for your life, including limiting screen time and app usage.
What could be the long term impact of using this app?
This app could help a person limit their screen time even after deleting the app as it could build healthy habits in our daily lives, this could lead to less time online and on phones. To conclude in the end with this app many people would be able to develop their world outside their phones as well as spend less time on their devices.
