The DECIDE Model stands for,
D: Define the problem
E: Explore your options
C: Consider the consequences
I: Identify your values
D: Decide what to do
E: Evaluate your decisions
Using this model, when encountered with a situation that can harm our or people around us’s safety, we can make healthy and safe decisions. During our teenage years, many are met with peer pressure and some fold under the pressure. However, by following closely with the DECIDE model, you are able to stand up for yourself and make the right decision. For example, if your friend offered you with alcohol, the problem would be the alcohol being offered to you. Your options would be accepting it, telling a trusted adult, politely refusing, etc. The consequences of alcohol would be both immediate and long term. Immediately, you could experience drunkenness, dizziness, throwing up, not thinking before you act, etc. And long term affects could be addiction, homelessness, jail, losing money. Our values as a student are to stay safe, protected and stay close with our friends. The final decision will be to kindly refuse and if they push it further tell a trusted adult. This is because we don’t want to be entangled in this situation so kindly refusing sets your boundaries, and consequences are dealt if our friend doesn’t respect our boundaries.
Some important things we learned during this unit on drug and alcohol use were extensive. Firstly, any of these substances are extremely addictive through the release of chemicals such as nicotine to trigger receptors and make you feel good. These substances also cause you to feel very sick. Once addicted and trying to recover, withdrawal may occur and cause you to feel even more sick. These substances worsen ones life exponentially and drugs are never the way to cope with problems.
