Unit 2 Reflection & Semester Check-In

Part 1: Unit 2 Topic A and B Test Reflection (Functions & Statistics)

  1. I chose Question 1 as evidence of my best thinking because it shows that I understand the topic and the answer that I need to give. Additionally, it shows the work that we have been doing in class.
  2. I chose Question 2 as evidence of my best thinking because it shows the different formats that we have learnt about in class. We now know how to convert different types of graphs and word problems to linear equations.
  3. Throughout Unit 2, I improved the most at Statistics and how to read and use a residual plot.
  4. One skill from this unit that I still need to work on is adding more mathematical precision to my answers to questions.
  5. The biggest challenge for me on this assessment was the L4 question, I didn’t draw a linear model very effectively as some of my points could have been more precise and accurate.
  6. One strategy that helped me on this test was reviewing the boba lottery questions before the test to grasp what I still needed to learn and understand my challenging areas. Additionally, it also helped me visualize what the test might be like.

Part 2: Goal Reflection & End-of-Semester Check-In

A. Looking Back at Your Last Goal

Last unit, you set this goal: improving my critical thinking skills

  1. How well did you work toward this goal?
☐ Very well ☐ Somewhat ☐ I struggled with this
  2. What helped you make progress toward this goal? I’ve tried to get more practice when I can.
  3. What got in the way of this goal (if anything)? I didn’t really have a lot of spare time to practice my skill, so that got in the way of this goal.

B. End-of-Semester Self Reflection

  1. List three strengths you have shown last semester: I have a good understanding of functions, I always show up to class prepared and organized, and all of my hand-in assessments are done well and handed in on time.
  2. List three areas you still want to improve: I want to improve on my critical thinking, challenge myself to do the L4 extension task on tests and get the questions correct, and try to stop making mistakes that could be avoided.

C. New Academic Goal Moving Forward

  1. In the next unit I want to try and challenge myself to do things outside of my comfort zone, like all of the L4 extension task on tests.
  2. What might get in the way of this goal? I might feel a bit intimidated by the challenging questions, and not want to try.
  3. What will I do if I get stuck or need help? I will talk to my parents, my teachers, or my classmates for help.

Designing a Story Problem (Piecewise Function Project)

1. Describe your story and what real-life situation it modeled?

My story was about hair growth journey, and it models the real life situation of it. However, the hair growth journey in this story is a lot faster than the normal speed that hair would grow at in real life.

2. What part of your project are you most proud of? Why?

I’m most proud of my teamwork and collaboration skills. We worked together well and divided up the work evenly.

3. What was the hardest part of creating your piecewise function?

The hardest part of creating my piecewise function was to think of a story that was original and wasn’t one that I have seen before.

4. If you could revise one part of this project, what would you improve and how?

If I could revise one part of this project, I would improve my explanation and try to make it a bit more detailed.

5. What did this project help you understand better about piecewise functions?

I understood what a piecewise function was, how it works, and how to construct one.

PE Swimming unit

I improved on learning how to play water polo and getting better at passing and catching the ball during the game. I also improved on goal shooting, as I originally struggled to shoot the ball in the goal but in the end I managed to shoot the ball into the goal quite easily.

Mental Health: Reflection on Learning

What I Used to Think and What I Learned

I used to think that depression was just when a person was sad for a while, and that they can recover on their own. But now I think that depression is a mental illness that needs specific treatment depending on the person’s condition. I also learned that many mental illnesses like depression are stigmatized on the news, on social media, and on streaming platforms. These are unrealistic depictions of these mental illnesses.

I used to think that anxiety was when someone was anxious or nervous about something. I thought that OCD was when a person is very obsessive with a thing that they are focused on. However, I learned that there are different types of anxiety, not just one, and that there are two sides of OCD, the obsessive side and the compulsion side. I also learnt that eating disorders means overeating or trying to use extreme methods to lose weight. However, previously I thought that it meant to not eat.

How My Learning Changed

My learning changed through a project that we did. My group and I were doing a project on depression, so we decided to do a video and I learnt a lot about it, like how depression had two major types: major depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder meant that a person would have manic episodes as well as depressive ones, whilst major depressive disorder meant that a person would have depressive episodes, but not manic ones. I also learnt that antidepressants do not change someone’s personality, but makes them feel better about themselves.

How This Learning Affects My Views

This new information makes me more aware of the mental health of the people around me as well as myself. It helps me understand more about the people with these conditions, and what to do to try and support them.

Artifacts

Semester 1 Active Learner Reflection

My current goal is to give my best efforts on all assessments that I’ve been given and to do every piece of homework the day that I get it. I’ve managed to do every piece of homework the day that I get it except for one or two times recently and I’ve finished every assessment to my best capabilities.

I’m most proud of my understanding of the topics that we have learned as well as my improvement in my organizational skills.

My biggest challenge is probably managing time, as sometimes I spend too much time fixing details that don’t really matter, which gives me less time to work on more important parts.

I’ve prepared effectively for all of my assessments and I’ve always brought the appropriate materials to class.

Unit 1 Sticker Project

I liked that there were examples from previous students who did the sticker project so we got an idea of what it was supposed to look like. I also liked how we learnt about the transformations while constructing the sticker so I could use the skills that I had just learned in class. I wish that I did more early on as I was pretty stressed the two weeks before the sticker project was due.

Integrated Maths Unit 1

I chose question 2 as evidence of my best thinking because I identified the wrong point at first but then realized the formula to solve the question. I chose question 7 as evidence of my best thinking because I reviewed these types of questions a lot for my preparation before the test.

Throughout this unit, I improved the most at my ability to dilate figures by positive and negative scale factors. I feel that I still need to work on my critical thinking skills for finding the imposter triangle out of the triangles. Three of my strengths so far this year is dilating figures, improving my organizational skills, and writing congruency statements for triangles. I want to improve on my critical thinking skills, my preparation before assessments, and my time management skills in the next unit.

In the next unit, I want to improve my critical thinking skills by practicing more maths problems that includes that aspect. The things that might get in the way is having or leaving out enough time to complete these practices. I can find my parents or teachers for help if I get stuck.

Winter Concert

Recently, we practiced the pieces Overture to Lucio Silla, Ice Sculptures, Carol of the Bells/Greensleeves, and Winter With You. Throughout lessons, I’ve practiced some of my violin skills, like spiccato, legato, and much more. In my first few assessments, I was told in my feedback to make my bow hold better and bend my thumb more. For the past few days, I’ve been trying my best to fix my bow hold and in my last assessment my bow hold was accurate.
