Apprenticeship FINAL reflection

Critical Thinking:

I think critical thinking is a really important skill throughout our life. During these apprenticeship tasks, I effectively grappled with this skill. For instance, when I was having a debate with my friend about a certain topic, I needed to think ahead or prepare rebuttals to strengthen my arguments. Additionally, I also played a paper game called tic-tack-toe. When playing this game, I need to think of effective strategies to win this game. I believe that playing board games is very fun because we can develop our own skills while improving on our skills. I think I improved a lot from the start of my freshman year, because now, I am able to think independently when experiencing challenges and come up with diverse plans. Furthermore, I feel more patient and confident when I need to complete assignments that require critical thinking.

Creative learner:

I really enjoyed accomplishing creative learner tasks, because I love creating original artworks or music pieces. For example, I made an original piano song to reflect the beautiful autumn. Throughout this task, I was able to express myself with my interest in playing the piano, and to realize my surroundings through a different perspective. I also created a comic script about daily events that happened around me. I drew things such as my friends and fun events that happened in our friends’ group that enlightened my day. Furthermore, I also created a new book cover for a book called “Moby Dick”. This task encouraged me to delve into my own understanding of literature reading, and chose symbols that accurately represent the theme of this book. I believe these tasks improved my creativity by highlighting the importance of innovation and using creative ways to solve a problem. Therefore, I am very grateful to have these tasks and challenges.

Resilience:

From my perspective, resilience is the core value that can support us when we are experiencing hardship, because this skill allows us to be optimistic and prepared when facing obstacles. I did several tasks for this skill, for example, this semester, I decided to learn a new skill, which is MUN. This task showcased my resilience through my ability to step out of my comfort zone, engage with diverse perspectives, and navigate challenges in a collaborative environment. Although I faced challenges such as not fully understanding the procedures or different United Nation Councils, I eventually overcame these challenges and was able to raise POIs and speeches. Moreover, I also accomplished a gratitude activity about reflecting on positive events that happened in my life. For instance, I wrote that I am grateful for attending rehearsals with my friends and participating in the musical performance. This task allows me to realize the value of connection and shared experiences, which significantly contribute to my overall well-being and resilience. I believe those tasks improved my resilience and my ability to think optimistically when solving issues.

Effective Collaborator:

As a high school student, we are often involved in many collaboration projects. For example, we are required to work with unfamiliar people or your friends for a physics experiment, or we need to be effective collaborating with other schools or teachers. I believe these apprenticeship tasks shaped me as an individual who can effectively collaborate with all people. For instance, when I am participating in the school’s Eagle Innovator Program, I need to write business plans and schedule with my team members after communication. These works require us to be actively collaborating with each other to maximize our productivity throughout the project. Additionally, when participating in rowing competitions, I need to be proactively communicating and encouraging my teammates to do our best in the tournament. These experiences let me recognize the importance of collaboration, as it is inevitable to work with others for a project or for competitions.

Skillful communicator:

As a high school student, I have had many opportunities to develop my communication skills in both academic and extracurricular settings. For example, when I am working on group projects, I am often tasked with presenting information or leading discussions. One of the apprenticeship tasks requires me to promote a community event on a social media platform. I chose going to the cancer organization and assisting patients as the community event. I showcased my communication skill by posting advertisements on social media to incentivize people to help support organizations or others in need. Similarly, in my participation in the Challenge Success program, I often need to communicate effectively with my teammates to adjust our strategy and make real-time changes to the school system. These experiences have taught me the importance of being a skillful communicator, as clear, respectful communication helps to avoid confusion, build trust, and ensure that everyone is working toward a common goal.

Critical Thinking–Debate

I really enjoy debate because I need to collaborate with my teammates to come up with strategies and arguments. During debate, we need to be actively listening to our opponents’ ideas and coming up with powerful rebuttals. I believe these are all components of being an effective critical thinker.

Critical Thinking–Playing paper games

This game showcases my critical thinking skills because I need to analyze not only my own position but also anticipate and understand the motivations behind my opponent’s actions. I have to predict their moves, assess the risks, and devise strategies to counter their plans effectively. Critical thinking, in this context, involves evaluating various possible scenarios, recognizing patterns, and making decisions based on logical reasoning and strategic foresight. This dynamic process requires me to be flexible in adjusting my tactics while keeping my end goal in mind. Overall, it challenges my ability to think ahead, adapt, and make well-informed decisions under uncertainty.

Resilient-Gratitude Activity

What went well today? Why?

Today when walking to school, I saw frost on the playground, it was really crunchy and satisfying when I step on it. Additionally, we had a practice fire drill today during first period, although it was really cold standing outside, all students got to miss half of their first class!

What am I looking forward tomorrow?

I am looking forward of tomorrow’s spring play rehearsal, because I think rehearsing the songs with my friends and occasionally singing off-note are sometimes oddly funny

Resilient-Practicing a new skill-MUN

The new skill that I am practicing currently is MUN, because this is my first time joining MUN and I am in JV2. I want to fully understand how MUN works and how should we raise POIs, amendments and speeches. The challenges I faced were I couldn’t really understand the process and rules in MUN, and I am not used to making speeches during conferences. In the future, I would be more actively raising POIs and ask officer questions when I am uncertain about some rules.

Effective Collaborator-Rowing competition with my teammates

Rowing is a unique sport because it can be both an individual and a team sport. For the Nanchang Rowing League, I had the privilege of participating with my teammates, and together, we successfully became the champions. I truly enjoy rowing because it requires constant communication and collaboration with teammates. Each member of the team must synchronize their efforts, ensuring that we work together toward a common goal. This sense of unity and teamwork is what makes rowing both challenging and rewarding. It teaches valuable lessons in cooperation, discipline, and perseverance, all of which contribute to both personal and team success.

Effective Collaborator- Eagle Innovator project

I am the founder of Sustainapaint, a natural resource-based oil paint product created for the school’s Eagle Innovator Program. Currently, I am working alongside two other teammates in 9th grade. Our main goal is to raise awareness about pressing environmental issues such as climate change, ocean pollution, and the dangers of unsafe chemical exposure. To achieve this, we are developing a paint that is 100% non-toxic, offering a safer, eco-friendly alternative to traditional paints. By promoting the use of sustainable, environmentally responsible products, we aim to contribute to a healthier planet and reduce the harmful impact of hazardous chemicals on both people and the environment.

Skillful Communicator-Promoting a society event on social media

This is a post for a cancer community in ZhouShan, I attended their assembly and got a reward of being their supporter. This was a really memorable event because I got to understand cancer patient’s daily routine and how they successfully combatted cancer. I was extremely inspired by their optimism, strength and support they give to each other, and I hope every cancer patient can successfully recover and enjoy their vivid life.

Skillful Communicator–Challenge Success program

Challenge Success is a non-profit affiliated with the Stanford University Graduate School of Education. They partner with school communities to elevate student voice and implement research-based, equity-centered strategies that improve well-being, engagement, and belonging for all K-12 students. Supporting youth mental health is more important than ever.

In October 2024, all high school students at SAS participated in a survey focused on their school life. The survey inquired about mental well-being, support and engagement, homework load, and relationships as high school students. According to the survey results, a team will analyze the data and create future plans.

I am very grateful to be a member of this program and to contribute to positive changes at SAS. I am also really excited to collaborate with teachers, peers, parents, and the American manager of Challenge Success. I hope this program will effectively address student issues and the current struggles faced by high schoolers.

Morning tune🎶!–Creative Learner

Today, I will be focussing on creative learner. Being a creative learner is really essential, as we need to innovate new ideas and improve our creativity in our daily life. This is an extremely vital skill, as in the future, we undoubtedly need to identify innovative solutions to overcome challenges.🥀

🎹🎼I created an original piano piece called “To Autumn🍁”, I got this idea from the sudden cooling breeze and the flame colored leaves that fall from the deciduous trees. I attempted to illustrate the glamorous transition from late summer to early autumn through combining C major and D major notes, while modifying the tempo throughout my piece. I believe it worked out pretty well, as each transition of notes or tempo superimposes a different tone to my piano piece, while also adding emotional depth and embellishments to the original base notes.

I really enjoyed making music while improving my creative learner ability. Throughout this experience, I used fully my imagination and observation to identify daily scenic beauty and create a piece that is interrelated with this time period🩵. However, I don’t have a written lyric for this piece, this is definitely something that I will work on in the future, as lyrics can create a much more vibrant and concrete scene for the audiences. 🙌
