Unit 4 Dystopian Fiction Reflection

-What did I learn?

I learned how to validate my peers in academic discussions. I learned how to analyse a story with the 7 characteristics sheet, and to really think of how it connect to life. I also learned how to be able to engage in a conversation comfortably in the discussions we had.

-How does Dystopian Fiction invite me to think about real life?

It made me think how good we have it. The giver made me really consider how much loss they had in a dystopian world, no color, no love, not even snow! This made me think what would happen if suddenly our community was like this?

-Did you like The Giver?

I really enjoyed The Giver, the screwed up world made me consider how I think of our world. The general topic of having to experience things through memory was really interesting. I also really liked Jonases character, doing things for the greater good, although I do think the ending was a bit weird but the story was awesome.

-How have I improved my ability to write Academic Paragraphs?

I improved it by realizing how many times I should state my evidence so the reader will understand it better. I also learned how to make a better topic sentence and how to make a stronger conclusion. This helps me make my sentence more persuasive to my readers ad teachers.

-How am I better now interacting with other in Lit. Discussions?

I feel more confident with my peers now also being able to have my notebook with me to have a sort of a cheat sheet. I also learned how to validate my peers and to question them when they might be wrong. Now, after a whole unit, I think discussions are really interesting when I use my cheat sheet.

Unit 2 Otzi Unit Portfolio Reflection

  1. What did I work on?
    1. During this unit, ‘Why should we care about the past?’, I worked on
      1. Making observations, inferences and wonderings
      2. Using photos and articles as evidence
      3. Writing a CER paragraph
      4. Asking and answering open and closed questions
      5. Taking part in the Otzi Mock Trial, my role was Defense lawyer number 1
  1. What did I learn? Why should we care about the past?
    1. We should care about the past because we can learn origins of humans+their culture. We can learn how we used to live. We can learn how different we are compared to how we were in the past.
  1. What worked well?
    1. I am proud of the following work because I organized everything, every assignment was on time and I did quite well in my opinion for the mock-trial.
    2. I am proud of the work under because I expanded my learning by experiencing a mock-trial and setting up for the trial for the first time.
  1. What did not work well?
    1. I found some of this work challenging, because it was hard to argue my case of the arrowhead, it was hard when the witnesses couldn’t answer my question and when I had to deliver the opening sentence
    2. I found the work under challenging because it was hard to give them a general idea of what we were gonna talk about,
  1. Personal Relevance
    1. Collaboration and communications skills are important in my future because if I do end up doing some kind of career that involves giving a speech, I have experience.

Math: Bake Sale🧮🧑🏼‍🍳

1) What did I do?

Me and my partner Henri, used math and units to find the recipe for the brownie so we can bake it fro our bake sale. We learned how to convert our units into measurements. We also, learned how to decide a markup for our product/signature item.

2) What did I learn?

I learned how to use a unit rate inside measurements. I learned how to use markups to decide my set price for my product by first determining the percentage then calculating what that percentage is. Finally, I learned how to apply math into baking. Some people thought it was pricey but we negotiated and gave discounts which rolled in more customers.

3) What worked?

We successfully made conversions and applied it to our math and made a delicious brownie. We learned how to determine markup by finding a percentage and calculating how much that percentage is. Some people thought it was pricey but we negotiated and gave discounts which rolled in more customers.

Our profit at the end was about 300.5 “RMB” and our income for the brownie were 620 RMB. Each brownie was supposed to be sold for 18 RMB, but we gave out discounts and grew our customers first, then raised the price. Our cost for making each brownie was about 9 RMB. After combing everything our total of money in the basket is 690 “RMB.”

4) What did not work?

We didn’t have time to bake together but we end up still being able to complete the project. We had lots of trials and errors with baking and calculations. We had to rush a bit because we were behind a little on calculations. Some people thought it was pricey but we negotiated and gave discounts which rolled in more customers.

5) Personal Relevance

How to negotiate with customers. This can help me in the future for example, in sales or business. I can also improve my math. Learning the unit rates help me understand calculations better. It makes it easy to calculate the whole numebr after dividing.

Egg Car

What did I do? The criteria was for students to use materials provided to make a egg car that could hold a egg and let it go down a ramp without any injuries or cracks.

What did I learn? We see the 1st law when the car stays in motion unless it’s hit by a unbalanced force. The unbalanced force is the concrete when the car hits it, the car stops moving. The 3rd law is shown when the car goes down the ramp and when it hits the concrete, it has a equal reaction when the car moves backwards.

What worked? We collaborated and cooperated. Penny wanted to add a seatbelt so she worked on it, I worked on perfecting the crumple zone. We both had ideas so we decided to listen and see what happens.

What did not work? I would not change much except for buffing the crumple zone, I think when it hit the concrete, it kinda puffed up, so I want to make it stronger so it doesn’t happen. I would do that by supporting it with another net.

Personal Relevance-This could help me improve my collaboration amongst my peers and it could help me learn more about designing things. This could help in future classes like DT and drama workshop, maybe even art. This could help me improve my learning, so if I had to do it again, I can learn from my mistakes.

Balloon Car

What did I do?

We had to use metal rods, bottle caps, balloons and foam plates to create a balloon car and then test to see how far it goes. We used different test like using washers to test Newtons second law(F=MA). We used different amounts to see how it affects out distance.

What did I learn?

We used Newtons first Law, a object in motion/rest, will stay in motion/rest unless acted upon by an unbalanced force, this was shown when the balloon car was in rest until we let loos of the balloon. Newtons second Law states Force=Mass x Acceleration, was shown when the washers slowed down the car, then shortened the distance. Newtons third Law states every action has a equal but opposite reaction, shown when the air pushed the car, and let out a amount of force, then the force was on the other side, causing the distance.

What Worked?

We collaborated well, splitting the work load and always being active. We finished fast and stayed on task. All of our test, we made sure they were accurate, and it followed our chart.

What did not work?

We struggled with trying to measure it across the room when it went a different direction. We had a ruff time trying to get the car to go straight so it would be easier to measure. We also struggled with trying to put the same amount of air each time.

Personal Relevance

This could help me in the future, so I can memorize these Laws and master them, so I won’t have trouble with them in the future. Some example are, pinwheels, when you run with it in your hand, the air blows at it, causing it to start spinning, this is an example of the first law, the wheel stay in place until the air blows at it. Another example is the metal bells we have outside, when the air blows at the rods, they collide and make this nice little melody, this is also an example of the first law.

#Health is the best!

Changes

It’s important because if you notice changes to your body, you know that it’s normal and it happens to everybody. It can help us learn about our body and how we change in different ways. It was also make us respect others, if we notice something about others, we can simply keep it to ourselves or we can tap them on the shoulder and help them.

Things i’m confident and concerned about

I feel most confident about physical changes, I don’t think it will affect me much so i’m not so worried. I’m most worried about internal changes like my voice, i’m not quite fond of my voice changing but i’ll have to deal with it.

Online safety

Make sure to look at the link and drag your mouse to see if it’s valid. Also you can see the website URL. This could tell a lot about the website. Also, if they are urging you to quickly enter, this is another sign the is a phishing website. If it says it’s from a local business, it could also be fake.

Improve

I hope to improve on my self control and learn to control my emotions and have control of my own actions.

Creative writing reflection

What are we doing? Writing a fictional story based on a theme that matters to me.

What are we learning? My theme is to show that, you have to find your home, find a environment where you are comfortable in. My character goes from being scared and afraid, till being brave strong and kind. My story is set as a western style story, having a conflict with my antagonist. My setting takes place in Kyles school, house and the woods where he develops his character.

What’s working? I enjoyed writing the magical part of the story when Kyle goes into the woods and explore his soon to be second home. I enjoyed the element of being a bit sad but also having a bit of horror as well. I got the idea for my story by watching Harry Potter and then hearing about a Animagus. My favorite line from the story is “Sorry dad, I love you, I know it’s not your fault you weren’t around, and I just wanted to say, I forgive you.”

Areas for Growth I was planning to write that Ralph was gonna be the antagonist in the story but he actually only played a small role, I thought Kyles dad being the antagonist had a stronger meaning to the story. My least favorite part is probably the fight scenes. I don’t know why but they just didn’t click for me.

Personal Relevance Creative writing can help me learn more about character development and how to analyse these traits. It also expands my writing and my creativity.

Fiction Reading-Character Analysis

What are we doing? Reading One Piece and determining important character traits

What are we learning? How to analyze characters (Character’s Actions, Words, Thoughts, and Others’ Reactions)

What’s working? .

In the One Piece series, I use different techniques like thinking of why might this character do what he did and notice what he says and does through out the story. Also if some traits don’t come up as much then Its easy for me to decide, this trait isn’t really as relevant as this trait. Carefully reading the dialouge really helps with me regognizing there tone and it helps me realize what type of person they are. Like I said, actions are also really important too, as they can help you question, why did he do this or why did he do that. One more thing that’s a key detail to keep in mind while analyzing traits is how do they act around different people, like friends or enemies, do they act humble like my character Zoro, or do they act fears and has no mercy like buggy.

Areas for Growth . I have to work on making sure when writing paragraphs I have to make sure that I only focus on one trait and not multiple. I also have to keep in mind that I have to not provide to much evidence or else the reader will think that I think they don’t know that he’s selfless.

Personal Relevance

I think this was very helpful for me so I can learn more on trait while reading my storys. The way to analyse the character traits are very important.

Critical thinking with GRAVITRAX and INDI

What did I do? I played with indi robots and played gravitrax to help improve my critical thinking skills . The different patterns in indi made be use my critical thinking and common sense.

What did I learn? Critical thinking is using logic and reasoning in certain situations like when we played indi and gravitrax. Problem solving is also involved by making you really think and solve problems by yourself.

What worked? I used my critical thinking when me and my group was trying to figure out the patterns while playing indi, we used critical thinking to think what piece we needed to make the indi bot turn and stop and slow down etc.

What did not work? In gravitrax we often ran out of pieces and we almost ran out of time. The marble would also go through a different route then we wanted it to. In indi sometimes it will miss the color and not do what we wanted it to do.

Personal Relevance. This could help me improve my critical thinking by giving me experience for the future and could help me improve for next year or future projects.
