Unit 2 Reflection &Semester Check-In

Part 1: Unit 2 Topic A and B Test Reflection (Functions & Statistics)

A. Evidence of Your Best Thinking

  1. I chose Question 1 as evidence of my best thinking because it shows that I can identify the different parts of a graph. The question asks me to find the maximum, minimum, and all the intervals of increase.
  1. I chose Question 3 as evidence of my best thinking because it shows that I can correctly interpret the association of the scatter plot in context and using the information available to predict.

B. Skills Reflection

  1. Throughout Unit 2, I improved the most at the statistics part of the unit since by the end of the unit I was able to describe the association of plots and when comparing scatter plots and residual plots I am able to draw a line of best fit.
  1. One skill from this unit that I still need to work on is drawing scatter plots based on information given from residual plots and slopes.
  1. The biggest challenge for me on this assessment was drawing scatter plot based on a residual plot and some other information. This is because I wasn’t careful enough with the scale which lead me to making some mistakes. But I eventually fixed it up before I handed the assessment in.
  1. One strategy that helped me on this test was remembering to use the word “predicted” This prevented me from losing unnecessary marks.

Part 2: Goal Reflection & End-of-Semester Check-In

A. Looking Back at Your Last Goal

Last unit, I set this goal: extending my learning to L4

  1. How well did you work toward this goal?
☐ Very well ✅ Somewhat ☐ I struggled with this
  1. What helped you make progress toward this goal?

During class practices, I tried harder practices in order to deepen my understanding of statistics and functions.

  1. What got in the way of this goal (if anything)?

The fact that I didn’t have enough time to finish the optional extension stopped me from getting a 4 on this assessment.

B. End-of-Semester Self Reflection

  1. List three strengths you have shown last semester:

My first strength shown during last semester was I am able to complete all assignments on time. My second strength shown during last semester was being able to keep up with the class pace. My second strength shown during last semester was being able to understand what was being taught in class.

  1. List three areas you still want to improve:

One area I want to improve is being more careful with my calculations to avoid making careless mistakes. Another area I want to improve is reading the question enough times to make sure that I understand what I need to solve for. Another area I want to improve is being more prepared before assessments.

C. New Academic Goal Moving Forward

  1. In the next unit I still want to be able to extend my learning to an L4.
  1. What might get in the way of this goal?

Challenges like not getting enough time or not fully understanding the key concepts taught in class.

  1. What will I do if I get stuck or need help?

If I get stuck or need help I will go to my peers and my teacher. I will ask questions to clear my confusion.

Design a Story Problem Reflection

My story is about a girl who is moving from China to Las Vegas and needs to ship her furniture and belongings. We’ve designed the problem to be Ayesha needing help on figuring out the total cost of shipping her furniture and belongings. It modeled the real life situation of shipping things from place to place and the cost.

The part of my project that I was most proud of is the part where my partner and I calculated and solved the problem of finding the total cost of shipping the furniture and belongings of Ayesha. This part involved in many calculations due to the numerous items that needed shipping.

The hardest part of creating my piecewise function was finding the appropriate story for my piecewise function. My partner and I came up with many stories but only found one that was able to make a piecewise function for.

If I could revise one part of this project I would improve on the accuracy of my explanations to make sure they are clear and easily understandable, especially when describing the certain parts of the graph or features of the story.

This project helped my better understand what parts create a piecewise function. At first, I didn’t really understand makes a piecewise function what it is. Then I learned about how piecewise functions have different equations but can all be shown in the same graph to represent certain changes.

Unit 3: Identity and Healthy Relationships

In unit 3 students had to analyze a relationship portrayed in a media. This purpose of this project is to help students with identify healthy relationships and analyze the parts of a healthy relationship. From my analysis, I have concluded that most media portray an unhealthy relationship. By doing that, they can attract more viewers because a bad relationship is what makes the media entertaining.

The most important ideas I learned in this unit about identity or healthy relationships was about intersex people, gender stigma, and sexual orientation. I didn’t know about intersex people and what being would be like. I knew briefly about what gender stigma was but never realized it was so serious. I understand what sexual orientation is but didn’t understand it deeply. Through this unit, I learned about sexual identity and healthy relationships.

PE Reflection

Throughout the outdoor invasion games unit I learned about how to change from defence to offence. We practiced skills such as dribbling, passing, and shooting. I improved in dribbling and passing. I can do better in shooting because sometimes the ball wouldn’t go in the direction I want it to go.

Unit 2 Portfolio: Reflection on Learning

In this unit we learned about how technology related to mental health. We experimented on an app to reshape our bad behaviours, the did a project on researching about a mental health issue. My research topic was about depression, which included two types of depression: major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder.

I used to think mental health meant the mind version of physical health. For example, being happy about life, satisfied with the quality of the work you produced, and having good relationships with most people. I had assumptions like the only way to treat mental health issues were therapy, I didn’t know that medication would also work for certain types of mental health issues. I had misconceptions like eating disorder doesn’t belong in the category on mental health issues.

But now I understand what is actually means to have mental health issues, and how they feel everyday. I learned what OCD is (obsessive compulsive disorder), symptoms and causes of PTSD, and treatments for anxiety. My perspective has changed since now understand what mental health patient are experiencing.

Social Studies Unit 1 Reflection

Unit 1 is called Inquiry into Interest, my interest was how did the Pearl Harbor attack reshape Hawaii’s economy through tourism between 1941-2024? Then we decided on potential topics that we could eventually do a project on. After a topic has been decided, we would dive deeper into this topic by deciding on an inquiry question, finding evidence to support my claim, writing reasonings to explain on how my evidence supports my claim, and eventually putting them all into a poster.

I did well on clearly organizing my information into a poster, finding evidence to support my claim. My poster can be clearly read and has graphics/visuals to support my research. I need to improve on developing inquiry questions. I will improve on that by asking the teacher for feedback on how I can improve my inquiry question.

Orchestra Reflection

In orchestra we have been working on bow strokes and bow holds, also we have been working on our winter concert pieces. This year we have four pieces to play in total, which includes Overture to Lucio Scilla, Ice Sculptures, Carol of the Bells, and Winter With You. I’ve been doing well on keeping up with the orchestra when I am playing. I need to improve on playing all my notes correctly. I will improve on that practicing at home.

Unit 1 Sticker Project

One thing that I liked about this project was that we could express our own creativity with math. We could draw what we liked and include math in it. One thing I wished that was different is that I hope we can work with peers next time because that can lead to more creativity maybe the final stickers will look better.
