BADMINTON🏸🐟

We learned how to do a legal forehand and backhand serve. I also learned how to grip a badminton racket and clear shot. The last thing we learned is how to do a drop net. We practiced doing these things with a partner then played games using these strategies .

Something I did well on is griping the racket and serving the shuttlecock. When I serve I can hit the shuttlecock far so my opponent has to move backwards which makes it harder for them.

Something I can do better at is a drop net because whenever I hit the ball back I hit it harder than i’m supposed to so it’s not really a drop net.

Dystopian Fiction/ The Giver Reflection

What did I do?

In language arts we had a unit on Dystopian Fiction and read the book The Giver by Lois Lowry. We discussed about the book, wrote academic paragraphs, responding to questions, and building onto the vocabulary.

What did I learn?

I learned how to write academic paragraphs and how to improve them by adding vocabulary and transition words. We also had to do academic discussions where we had to take notes and discuss with a group of people on a topic like birthmothers, color etc…

What worked?

Im proud of my academic discussions because I agreed and built onto others ideas and shared most of my ideas. My discussion group and I we kept thinking of new ideas and we kept the discussion going instead of just moving onto topics and not building onto each others ideas.

What did not work?

Something that did not work is when writing my academic paragraphs in common lit I could have used more transition words and vocabulary to make it more academic.

Personal Relevance

The book and this unit will help me achieve goals in life because the discussions can help me with my communication skills. I practiced building onto each others ideas and I can propose ideas in future discussions.

SOCCER REFLECTION⚽️🦃

We learned how to dribble and pass the ball (aka play soccer)

Being with MA BESTAYY (aka Iris) because we collaborate and WIN

Im proud of playing soccer and not giving up. Also dribbling the ball across the field.

Something I can work on is persuading the teacher to put me with MA BESTAYYYY and passing toward my targert and not the opponents.

Tasty Profits Project

What did we do?

In math we were learning about rates and percentages and for the final project we did a tasty profits project. We had to create some sort of food or drink and me and my group decided to make Zesty Lemon Cookies. We decided to make this because we all really like cookies and lemons. We had to find a recipe and we used the recipe from Boston Girl Bakes. We searched on a website called Epermarket to find out the prices of the ingredients in the metric system and the U.S. system. Then we calculated the cost for the batch and servings. Then we calculated the markup price as the final step. Then we baked the cookies and sold them.

What did I learn?

I learned how to find the batch cost, servings cost, and how to figure out the markup price during this unit. To find out the batch cost we added up all the costs of the ingredients and then added all the other costs to find the batch cost. Then we found the servings cost by dividing the batch cost by 24 cookies because that’s how many cookies are made in a batch. Then in the end we decided to make our markup price 200%. Then we added the markup price with the original price.

What went well?

Something that went well is that when we baked the cookies they were really good and we sold them for a good price so a good majority of people would come to our stand and we made a lot of money.

What didn’t go well?

Something that didn’t go well is when we were deciding on the markup price and rounded it was difficult for me and my partners to get the same answer. Then when we were buying ingredients for the cookies it was also hard for us to find it.

Self relevance

Learning about percents, ratios, and how to do these other steps can help me in the future because when I go buy something I can look at the price and decide if the cookies are worth the price.

Unit II- Ötzi Unit Reflection

What did I work on?

In Social Studies, we were learning about why we should care about the past, so we researched a 5,300-year-old preserved mummy called Ötzi.  We first learned how to write observations, inferences, and wonderings. After we learned how to do that, we learned how to write a CER paragraph which stands for claim, evidence, and reasoning. In the very end, we learned how to ask and answer a closed or open question. An open question is when you are asking something and when someone is answering it, they will give an answer and explain why they think it’s the answer. Meanwhile, in a closed question, it’s the complete opposite you are asking a question where they will give a short answer without an explanation.

What did I learn?

We learned about Ötzi the Iceman as I mentioned before, and we were trying to answer why we should care about the past. So, we used the skills above to research Ă–tzi and learned about the neolithic ages. I learned that we need to care about the past because we humans need to know how the earth evolved from the neolithic ages to now. We learned about what people used to eat and the tools they used to use. Learning how much we evolved this could also help us determine how the world could evolve in the future.

What worked well?

A lot of things went well throughout this unit, specifically doing research and asking closed and open questions. When doing research, making observations, inferences, and wonderings will help you understand things better and help make your research detailed and more knowledgeable. I did well on this because I used these strategies, and I felt like my research was a lot better than my past research. Then when asking open and closed questions, I can ask questions where it will make it obvious if it is an open or closed question.

What did not work?

Somethings didn’t work as well are the mock trial and the CER paragraph. When I was speaking during the mock trial, I was super nervous, and I didn’t project my voice, and it was hard for the expert witness to understand what I was trying to ask. Then my CER paragraph the information is good but when I am writing the conclusion I did not connect it to my claim so I could improve on that.

Personal Relevance

Communication and collaboration will be very useful in the future because we will collaborate and communicate in the future and if you can’t do these skills, then it will be very hard to interact with other people. If you don’t have good communication skills, then when you are in a group it will be hard to share ideas and communicate with them.

BALLOON CAR🎈 🚗

What did I do?

In science class our goal was to build a balloon car that will travel itself. We had to build it with materials like a balloon, straw, wheels, styrofoam tray, axel, and rubber bands.

What did I learn?

We built a balloon car because it connects to Newtons’s second law which is the law of acceleration. This connects because the amount of air in the balloon affects how far is goes. And Newton stated that if an object contains more mass there will be more force needed to move it. So if the balloon car has more washers on it there will be more air needed to make it move the same distance. Newton’s 1st law states is an object is at rest it tends to stay at rest but if an object is in motion it tends to stay in motion unless acted up upon by an unbalanced force. We see this in action with the Balloon Car when it keeps traveling but the friction from the force which is the unbalanced force acts on it so it stops. Newton’s 3rd law sates that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. This connects to the balloon car because the action is when the air comes out of the balloon and the reaction is the car moving.

What worked?

Our balloon car traveled really far and it worked really well. It was easy to contain the air in the balloon without escaping. Something else that went well was that the acceleration of our car was really fast and it would travel straight.

What didn’t work?

When we were measuring how far the car went there was no pattern when we looked at the distances the car traveled and I thinks it’s because we didn’t put the same amount of air in the balloon.

Self relevance

The balloon car is kind of like a real car because its like how fast you go you have more acceleration. I see Newton’s laws in real life when I push someone like my brother it also affects me because there is a reaction to the action.

Egg Car Challenge🥚 🚗

What did I do?

In science class our goal was to build a egg car and let it travel down a ramp without the egg breaking. We did this challenge because it will help our understanding of Newtons 3 laws. We had criteria’s like preventing the egg from cracking or breaking and prevent the egg from flying out. The constraints of this challenge was that we only could use 3 pieces of A4 paper, 1 straw, and 1 meter of tape. We also only had 2 hours to construct the egg car.

What did I learn?

We did this challenge because this can connect to Newton’s 3 laws which we are learning about in science class. Newton’s 3 laws are seen in the Egg Car like the Law of Inertia which is Newtons first law is connected because Newton states that if an object is at rest it tends to stay at rest and if an object is in motion it tends to stay in motion unless acted up upon by an unbalanced force. When the Egg Car is going down the ramp everything stays in motion and when it hits the concrete block the car still wants to stay in motion but the block is the unbalanced force acting on it forcing the car to stop. This also connects to Newton’s 3rd law because Newton stated every action has an equal and opposite reaction so when the car hits the concrete block that is the force and at the same time the concrete block hits the car with force which is probably the reason the egg cracked.

What worked?

We took off the rubber part of the wheel and it went a lot smoother although there is a lot more acceleration. Something else that worked is the base of the cart it was really sturdy and it was able to hold the weight of an egg without deconstructing.

What didn’t work?

Something that didn’t work is ur crumple zone it was really week and it didn’t take much of the force from the concrete so the egg cracked. At the same time me and my teammates underestimated how fragile an egg can be.

Self relevance

The understanding of Newton’s 3 laws will help me because I understand why things work like this as in if I didn’t learn about this then I wouldn’t know why i’m not pushing through the ground or why i’m defying gravity.

Creative Writing Refelction

What are we doing?

Writing a fictional story based on a theme that matters to me.

What are we learning?

Theme (my purpose for writing this story, my message to readers)

Character Development (creating believable characters with positive & negative traits)

Plot (the sequence of events in my story; Western and Eastern approaches to storytelling).

Setting (the world that I create for my story)

What’s Working:

What story elements did you enjoy planning and writing?

I enjoyed brainstorming what my story is going to be about because I can use my creativity and explore what I can write about.

What elements of my story are you proud of?

I am proud of my writing specifically describing things because the reader can picture what i’m talking about.

How did you get the idea for your story?

I got my idea for my story from a murder mystery game me and my friends made and also a book called Hatched by Gary Paulsen.

The Best Line from My Story:
Max responded, “That’s true but we are in a jungle with NO INTERNET, NO VIDEO GAMES, AND WE DON’T HAVE A BED.”  I really like this quote/line because in real life I get quite annoyed when I don’t have internet so this quote connects to me and it’s my favorite.

Areas for Growth:

What story elements were challenging to plan and write?

Developing the character traits and showing them in my story for me was challenging because I usually give all my characters the same traits.

How did you deal with these challenges?

I tried developing new character traits and not only giving the good traits to the protagonist.

What is your least favorite part of the story?

My least favorite part of the story is my ending because I ran out of time so I couldn’t write a detailed ending.

#Growth

Why is it important to understand the changes that occur during puberty?

It is important to understand the changes that occur during puberty because you might worry about the changes happening to you and you don’t know why its happening. Also that people grow at different speed so you shouldn’t compare yourself to anyone.

What is the change you feel most comfortable about?

The most comfortable change i’m going through is probably growing taller because before I was always one of the shortest but now I am growing taller and I feel like I don’t stand out as much.

What is the change that you feel most concerned about?

The change i’m most concerned about is when you grow older you get back pain because it’s really hard for me to concentrate on something when I am in pain.

When looking for information online, how can you ensure it is credible and appropriate?

When you are looking for information you need to find trustable sources that you might have used at school or that you know gives you true information. You need to read the title and see if it is appropriate for your age.

What is one of the aspects of your learning that you want to improve on moving foward?

A aspect of my learning I want to improve on is learning and memorizing the different body parts of the human body and how it changes through puberty.
