What are we doing?
In this unit, we are focusing on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and collaborating with a partner to select a changemaker who has made an impact/ change in our world. As part of this project, we will create a Mixed Media Response (MMR) and a Canva Profile with important details and facts about our changemaker. My partner, Amy Chen, and I have decided to focus on Sonia Sotomayor, who is one of the nine justices serving on the U.S. Supreme Court. We believe that her contributions to justice and equality are significant and that she is an inspiring role model for youth and those seeking to work in the legal field.
What are we learning?
We learned how to research effectively by using reliable sources and databases, such as BrainPop videos and articles from Gale and Britannica. One of our assignments includes a research note on our change maker, where we will need to read articles and answer questions, such as basic background information that we believe are important to know, who or what they are trying to help, how did they help, and what were the effects of their actions. In our case, we learnt that Sonia Sotomayor is the first Latina Supreme Court Justice in the United States. Her efforts have primarily focused on advocating for civil rights and ensuring justice is accessible to all, regardless of their background.
What’s working?
Something that went well in this project was filling out the Changemaker Research Note. We are required to read a different article each, which is about our changemaker (Sonia Sotomayor). I chose Britannica/Newsela, and my partner, Amy, chose Gale. However, when reading through the article, I realized that the content in Britannica and Newsela isn’t enough, and I decided to read Biography.com for some extra information. There are 3 sections in the changemaker note, 1 section for each of us to fill out the questions, and another for a BrainPop movie, where we will fill it out together. Both of us were able to collaborate effectively on the project. We divided our tasks, ensuring that we were both on the same page with our findings. Filling out the Changemaker Research Note was particularly beneficial, as it helped us understand and summarize the information that we gathered.
What’s not working?
An area of improvement would be the design and making process of our Mixed Media Response (MMR). We are still unsure about the elements we included, and found it quite challenging to choose pictures and texts that best represent the traits/characteristics of Sonia Sotomayor. Additionally, we struggled to step outside our comfort zone and experiment with something entirely new and different from our past experiences. MMRs are basically anti-CARP, meaning they are really different from typical posters, and it took us a lot of time adjusting to the fact that we do not need to align texts and pictures in how we would when designing posters.
Personal relevance
This project is really interesting to me as it resonates with my interest in social justice and equality. Sonia Sotomayor’s story is inspiring, especially as she overcame numerous challenges to become the first Latina Supreme Court Justice in the United States. By doing the MMR and research notes, I deepened my understanding of how impactful an individual can be and how they can cause changes. I also think that the skills that we’ve learned in this unit, such as paraphrasing and annotating texts, will help me in the future when I need to summarize a really long text, and provide me with a better understanding of the key ideas in articles and videos. Finishing the MMR project taught me to be creative and come up with inspiring ideas.
EFFECTIVE COLLABORATION
An area of EFFECTIVE COLLABORATION that I was the best at was paying attention to self and others because I was consistently listening to what my partner was saying and giving constructive feedback on her ideas.
An area of EFFECTIVE COLLABORATION that I need to improve is pausing before talking. My partner and I often get excited when discussing our ideas, and this sometimes leads to us speaking over each other, which decreases the amount of work done since not all of our conversations are qualitative. I can improve on this area by allowing myself to take a few seconds to think over what I am about to say, and double-checking whether it is necessary.
