Unit 2 Reflection & Semester Check-In

  1. I chose Question 6 as evidence of my best thinking because it demonstrates my understanding of linear models by evaluating whether the linear model was appropriate for a specific set of data. My analysis used evidence including the scatter plot, association, regression equation, correlation coefficient, and residual plot to determine whether the model was appropriate.
  1. Question 4 shows my understanding of data analysis through the use of a line of best fit to solve real-world problems. It demonstrates my ability to interpret the slope and y-intercept within the context of the data.

Throughout Unit 2, I improved the most at explaining my work better when writing an explanation in a question.

One skill from this unit that I still need to work on is to make accurate predictions from a line of best fit, especially when the data is more scattered or is non-integer.

The biggest challenge for me on this assessment was deciding and evaluating whether a linear model was appropriate.

One strategy that helped me on this test was double checking my work and reading through my answers to make sure I didn’t make any calculation errors or if my explainations made sense.

Reflection & End-of-Semester Check-In

Last unit, my goal was to be organized and to keep a tidy notebook.

How well did you work toward this goal?
☐ Very well

What helped me make progress toward this goal?

I made sure to take good notes and write down every lesson clearly in my notebook.

What got in the way of this goal?

Rushing during class and not writing things down in the notebook right away.

Three strengths I have shown last semester:

  1. Being an active learner and participating in team discussions
  2. Showing up to class on time/being organized
  3. Reaching out for help when I have questions

Three areas I still want to improve in:

  1. Submitting all assignments on time
  2. Reaching out when I am absent to class
  3. Participating more in class discussions

  1. In the next unit I want to get in the habit of checking Schoology and doing assignments as soon as I can when I’m absent
  2. What might get in the way of this goal? If I forget/don’t have time to meet with the teacher if I have any questions
  3. What will I do if I get stuck or need help? I can ask a friend/classmate.

Math U2: Designing a Story Reflection

    1. Describe your story and what real-life situation it modeled?

My story is about Snoopy’s baking marathon for his cafe’s Christmas limited edition cookies. This models the real life situation of running a temporary baking sale, and includes a business structure with factors like startup cost, sales/revenue, and profit calculation.

    2. What part of your project are you most proud of? Why?

I am most proud of the structure of the story, because it is easy to follow and has clear numbers and realistic data for each day.

    3. What was the hardest part of creating your piecewise function?

The hardest part of creating the piecewise function was finding a way to include all requirements (ex. set amounts of intervals of increase, decrease, constants) in the story while also making it realistic.

    4. If you could revise one part of this project, what would you improve and how?

I would have only used either my notebook or type online to explain and solve the problem using function notations. Working using both was inefficient, and it would have been clearer and more convenient if all the work had been completed using a single page or platform.

    5. What did this project help you understand better about piecewise functions?

This project helped me understand that piecewise functions are a good way to model a real business situation/real life situation. For Snoopy’s bakery, different days had different costs, prices, and sales, so each day needed its own function part.

    L4: Sketchbook Cover

For my sketchbook cover, my artistic intention was to create an artwork that represents who I am through the use of color, line, and space. I wanted the design to reflect different parts of my identity, like my dog, my favorite places, and my hobbies, so I combined drawings and photos that are meaningful to me and incorporated them into my cover.

In my artistic process, I started by sketching several layout ideas to plan the composition. I experimented with different color combinations and materials, and decided to create an ocean wave using layers of blue paper. I arranged light blue, mid-blue, and dark blue paper in overlapping layers to show depth, and I used curved lines to create a sense of movement. These design strategies helped me connect the different elements of my composition and make the cover feel more dynamic and colorful.

Through this project, I learned how important it is to experiment with materials and ideas, and to use design strategies in artworks.

Unit 2 Portfolio: Reflection on Learning

    What I learned

This unit, I learned about various mental health illnesses and stigma, including OCD, anxiety, depression, PTSD, addiction, and eating disorders. By listening to presentations by classmates and researching on our own mental illness, OCD, I’ve learned the root causes, impact, ways to cope, and social media’ effects on people with mental illnesses.

    How my thoughts evolved

I used to think that many mental illnesses aren’t completely treatable, and that the main factor that cause these illnesses involve your environment and peers around you. Now I know that mental illnesses are all connected and how stigma from social media and people can impact people’s ideas and perspectives on mental illnesses. Another thing that I learned about mental illnesses is how important therapy and reaching out for help is, and that some mental illnesses can be caused by genetics. Some important pieces of information I learned include:

    Anxiety :

    • Only 3 – 5% of violent acts can be attributed to individuals with serious mental illnesses
    • Can cause social phobia and panic attacks, and concentrating can be difficult
    • Very persistent

    Depression:

    • Can cause nausea and weight loss
    • Can be caused by genetics
    • Connected to other mental illnesses

    PTSD:

    • There are two major categories of PTSD, uncomplicated and complex
    • Social media can actually help to cope with PTSD, allowing people to connect and heal while sharing and listening to eachother’s experiences
    • Symptoms might take weeks or even years to appear

    Addiction

    • Considered a brain disorder
    • Similar to heart disease, preventable and stoppable
    • There’s not a single cause for addiction

    Eating Disorders

    • 3 Major types:
      • Self starvation
      • Binge eating and then over – exercise or puking out food
      • Binge eating and then self-shame
    • Social media algorithms like TikTok and YT are shown to direct unhealthy body influencers or videos to young viewers
    • Can also be caused by genetics

    KOOL KOOR REFLECTION

    1. Cultural Influence on Aesthetic Choices

Kool Koor’s background before in the vibrant graffiti culture of Bronx clearly influenced his aesthetic choices in the techniques and styles he showed us. The fast-paced street art of1970s and 80s, where street artists had to be quick and make a big impact, can be seen in his use of vibrant colors and bold lines in his artwork. The layering techniques with paint reflects the improvisational (mainly doesn’t have a plan) when creating art in public spaces. His current use of abstract shapes in his artwork has evolved from the lettering styles in his early graffiti experiences, his interest in space and architecture.

    2. Environmental Impact on Art Creation

The shift from street art to studio work significantly impacted his creative process and art choices. When working on the streets, you need quick, expressive, and mostly large-scale movements. You need materials like spray paint. In contrast, a studio environment can give you a controlled space and more time for details.

While trying out his painting style in our classroom, the classroom made my work more controlled and neat compared to the *potentially* more free and rushed feeling of doing large-scale street art. We could take more time with our DNA shapes and focus on small details without having to be rushed. The quieter studio environment compared to the loud sounds of the city also might change Kool Koor’s art creation.

    3. Personal Reflection on Aesthetic Development

Aspects of my own background and identity will influence my future choices for my self-portrait mixed media artwork. I might include symbols of my hobbies and family, like elements related to baking, art, family, and dogs.

    • Incorporating symbols that represent my values or hobbies
    • Using various materials (such as fabrics, papers, or printed out photos)
    • Using a specific color palette that I enjoy or reflects on my personality + potentially country flag colors.

    Semester 1 Active Learner Reflection

    GOAL

    What is your current goal?

My current goal is to make sure that I always get a 3 on my 3 for 3s. I sometimes get a 2/3s on the quiz, because of a silly mistake or because I didn’t come prepared enough. To make sure I get a 3 every time on the quizzes, I will go through the Schoology science lesson quickly after every class to make sure I fully understand every topic that might show up on the test.

What progress did you make towards your goal?

Before every class or Day 2, I go through the homework or previous Schoology lesson to review the class material we learned. I also make sure that when I don’t understand a topic, I reach out to classmates and Mr. Tafel to ask for help.

    ACTIVE LEARNER

What are you most proud of in this class so far?

I’m most proud of my reflection/improvement and deep understanding in science class. I understand all class material and if not, I reach out to classmates or the teacher for help. I consistently reflect to my previous goals or learn from past assignments or feedback to improve in future work.

What has been your biggest challenge in this class?

The biggest challenge I faced in this class is being organized and fully prepared with all class materials at the start of class. Sometimes, I forget my laptop or pencil case in other classrooms, and have to go get it after class starts.

How have you demonstrated the qualities of an Active Learner – preparing effectively, participating fully, collaborating well, staying positive, and reflecting to improve?

I am always participating fully in science class with a positive attitude, collaborating well with my team mates or classmates during discussions or projects. I reflect to improve for future assignments by taking feedback and reflecting on goals. I mostly prepare effectively with class materials.

Are there any areas where you want to improve or grow in next quarter?

I want to improve in my organization and being prepared for class with all materials like laptops or writing utensils.

    Science Reflection

Reflecting on Ali’s video on her disease, I learned that our body’s cells, tissues, and organs are all impacted and reacts to diseases. When our body gets sick, the different body systems and subsystems get weakened and our immune system starts to fight the disease. Our body is built of groups of white blood cells that help prevent the disease from hurting your body. My group studied Diabetes. An example of how the disease, Diabetes, impacts you is how it causes your blood sugar to rise and then results in many different symptoms. Those symptoms include blindness, blurry vision, skin blotting and more.

When dissecting the pig heart and lungs, it showed us how they work together as organs to provide blood and air to the body. The body systems such as the circulatory, digestive, and integumentary systems and their subsystem organs corporate to keep our body running. Something that stood out to me was how the frogs organs were very different colors then I pictured.

I think something the teachers did in this unit that was really enjoyable were the dissections. Most students enjoyed them, but those who didn’t still learned something. The unit could be improved by having the mystery diagnosis the same disease to prevent unfairness.

    Social Studies: Socratic Seminar

I think I did well on these notes by using a lot of direct evidence coming from reliable sources. I also wrote a good amount of information so I could effectively support my idea on the socratic seminar claims.

Next time, I hope I could be less rushed on researching and work on my handwriting so it is easy to read and looks more organized. I could also add extra information and reasoning for more research.

    Social Studies Unit 1: Paragraph

One thing I did well on this paragraph was that I edited and revised my paragraph many times, improving my academic language and correcting grammatical/spelling errors, and making my thoughts clearer.

Something I needed to learn to do was to elaborate on my reasoning. I didn’t understand how to write reasoning, so instead I wrote an conclusion consisting of 1 sentence that didn’t support and connect the evidence to the claim. I could’ve improved my CER by writing more context about how my evidence is related to my claim and maybe show some personal opinion or experiences that support why my evidence shows how the claim is true.

One thing I did well on my 3rd paragraph was that I matched my evidence to my reasoning. Unlike my first paragraph, I had plenty of reasoning. My reasoning connected and supported my claim and evidence, providing specific details on how only one piece of evidence

    Unit 2 ELA Assessments

I think I did better on my summative pitch better then my formative pitch due to the feedback I received from my audience. I feel like I used my feedback very effectively and improved my pitch a lot. I’m proud of that and and how I used a loud voice and didn’t get nervous. Some challenges I experienced included creating the content slides and adding detail to my pitch. If I could redo my assessment, I would look at the audience more. I hope in the next unit I can keep on improving my presenting skills and work on effectively using my time.
