Unit 4 dystopian Fiction Reflection

What did I learn about Dystopian Fiction?

I learned that dystopian fiction is a sort of messed up society that makes me question our lives and the book. I also learned about the 7 different dystopian fiction characteristics that every messed up thing in the books can be related to.

How does Dystopian Fiction invite me to think about real life?

I began to question our society, look at the cursed things about The Giver, and wonder if this could be beneficial for our society. An example of this is getting rid of color, as this possibly could solve racism that is still a massive problem today.

I enjoyed/did not enjoy The Giver. (Explain)

I enjoyed parts of the giver and did not enjoy some parts. I enjoyed most of the book, as it shows key factors that makes us question society. It also slowly builds up tension, as Jonas slowly begins to question the society and decide to escape. I did not enjoy the ending, as I wished that it was longer so it could show more details. It felt like it was a bit rushed as it was barely 3 chapters.

How have I improved my ability to write an academic paragraph?

At first, I struggled to write good academic paragraphs on my own. After spending more time on it, now I can successfully write a academic paragraph that has all the key information.

How am I better now interacting with others in literature Discussion?

I can easily validate others, and summarize what they say. I also don’t read off a script and generate ideas as I talk.

Unlocking Your Health Potential

Some safety behaviors that are important to me are being safe online, because some there are dangerous people online. Cyberbullying is also a common problem from social media and games. The five people that I will talk to when something isn’t right are:

Mom

Dad

Aunt

cousin

grandma

turtle

In my opinion, social media affects teens by making them think that they are not good enough, getting little to no sleep, and participating in dangerous trends. Social media affects mental health quite a lot as teens can experience anxiety. Dangerous trends such as planking can cause hospitalization and even death. Some strategies I will use to protect myself are:

Not talking to strangers online and in real life unless with an adult

Not meeting people online in real life by yourself

reporting any weird things you notice online to a trusted adult.

The biggest takeaway I learned is aways be careful online and not talk to any strangers.

Unit 2 Ötzi Unit Portfolio Reflection

1.What did I work on?

a. During this unit, ‘Why should we care about the past?’, I worked on

i. Making observations, inferences and wonderings

ii. Using photos and articles as evidence

iii. Writing a CER paragraph

iv. Asking and answering open and closed questions

v. Taking part in the Otzi Mock Trial, my role was prosecution lawyer 1

and I had to say the opening statement and cross examine expert

witnesses 5 and 6.

2.What did I learn? Why should we care about the past?

a. We should care about the past because we can learn about the culture of

our ancestors, and where they originated from. We can also solve modern

problems that we have using our knowledge about the past.

3.What worked well?

a. I am proud of the following work of writing a CER, successfully completing a

mock trial, and preparing evidence and reasonings.

b. I am proud of the work above because I managed to successfully write my

first CER, and I am proud of all the preparation I did to write the CER, which is

evidence and reasonings. I am very proud of completing the mock trial and

actually winning the trial.

4.What did not work well?

a. I found some of this work challenging, finding evidence and reasoning,

analyzing Otzi photos, and finding new questions during the mock trial.

b. I found the work above challenging because it was hard to find out different

and specific reasoning and evidence for the CER, and writing several bullet

points about wonderings, observations, and inferences. When the expert

witnesses say that a question isn’t their expertise, I need to figure out new

questions to convince the jury.

5.Personal Relevancea. Collaboration and communications skills are important in my future

because I need to work with other people in the future and communicate

well so everyone can understand.

6.This is a photo of my final CER paragraph

Egg Car Challenge

What did I do?

The criteria for the egg car was to design and build a car with a safety system that will deliver an egg safely down a ramp.

What did I learn?

We see Newton’s 1st law in action with the Egg Car when the car hits the block but the egg tries to keep on moving. Newton’s 1st law states an object at rest or in motion will stay at rest or in motion unless acted on by another force. We see Newton’s 3rd law in action in the egg car when the car hits the concrete wall, the wall will exerts a equal and opposite reaction to the car that hits the block.

What worked?

The building of the Egg Car worked well because our collaboration was very good. We were successful in the process where we had to design it. We tested it multiple times and fixed it so it can safely deliver the egg.

What did not work?

The testing of the Egg Car was not successful. To solve this problem I would add a better crumple zone, so it can decrease the chance of the egg car cracking. I would also make the car bigger so it’s harder for it to fly off.

Personal Relevance

It is important to know Newton’s Laws because the science is used to develop a crumple zone in a car so we can be safe while driving. We can also safely enjoy rollercoasters because engineers use Newton’s Laws. This is important in my life because I might be a engineer and this can help me when I have to buy a car.

Balloon Car

What did I do?

The balloon car was built using 4 wheels, 2 axels, 2 straws, a balloon, a rubber band, tape, hot glue and a cardboard tray. The criteria was to build a car powered only by a balloon that can travel the farthest distance in a straight line. We used it to learn about Newton’s Laws. (The law of Inertia, The law of Acceleration, and The Law of Action and Reaction)

What did I learn?

Newton’s 1st law says that an object will stay at rest or stay in motion unless acted on by another force. We see this law in action with the balloon car when the car only move when we release the balloon, and it stays at rest when we don’t release it. Newton’s 2nd law says that acceleration of an object with constant mass is proportional to the net force action on it and is in the same direction of the net force. We see this law in action with the balloon car when we put more weight on the car, it won’t move as much as a car with less or no weight. Newton’s 3rd law says that all actions have an equal and opposite reaction. We see this law in action with the balloon car when air came out of the balloon, the car moved an equal amount.

What worked?

The process of building the car worked well because we were able to make the balloon car really fast and it was super light. We also successfully recorded the distance the car travelled with different amount of weights. Our teamwork was also pretty good when making the car.

What did not work?

It was a struggle when we first tested it as the car did not go and it kind of broke so we had to spend a lot of time fixing it. To solve this problem, we first taped the car tightly so it won’t break. Secondly, we put the balloon towards the end because it seemed to work better like that.

Personal Relevance

I see Newton’s 2nd law in real life when we drive cars because the more we push on the gas pedal, the faster the car will travel. The balloon car was like any other moving object in this world, as all of them use some sort of newton’s laws. (Cars, Rollercoasters, planes etc.) It is important to know these laws because it helps engineers and inventors to construct railways and tracks, and to build new vehicles.

Creative Writing Reflection

What are we doing?

Writing a fictional story based on a theme that matters to me.

What are we learning?

Theme (my purpose for writing this story, my message to readers)

Character Development (creating believable characters with positive & negative traits)

Plot (the sequence of events in my story; Western and Eastern approaches to storytelling)

Setting (the world that I create for my story)

What’s working?

I enjoyed writing the climbing action as it was getting closer to the climax of the story and all the battle scenes that the main character fights in. I am proud of the first big battle the main character fights in, as he begins to realize war isn’t the exciting field trip he imagined. I got the idea of the story from several war stories I’ve seen, and a couple of books and videos explaining the topic. My favorite line from the story is “That’s when I realized that war wasn’t about excitement and guns. It’s about losing and death.” A reason why this is my favorite is because most people thought that war was just a fun game or something. But, reality was that it was painful.

Areas for growth

A area I want to improve on is that I wanted my climax to be longer and more specific, but I couldn’t think of anything. Next time, I will try and make it more fun. My least favorite part is the beginning because it doesn’t have any good or really deep moments.

Personal Relevance

In the future, I want to make this story into a full novel and make it very detailed. I also want to somehow get it to be published so other people can read it.

Critical Thinking-Gravitrax

I made a rollercoaster for a marble and our goal was to make it go as fast as possible.

I learned that the rollercoaster has to go down slightly so the marble won’t stop in the middle of the tracks.

We managed to make the marble from the beginning to the end smoothly without any troubles.

I struggled to make the marble roll fast as it was kind of slow for the entire time on the rollercoaster.

Today’s learning will help me on my collaboration skills and how to resolve problems.

Fiction Reading – Character Analysis

What are we doing?

Reading The Hobbit and determining important character traits

What are we learning?

How to analyze character traits (Character Actions, thoughts, Dialogue, and Other Character’s Reactions)

Successes

A success I have is I can easily use the character’s thoughts, actions, and dialogue as clues to figure out their key traits that affect their choices in the story. And figuring out key traits by reading the first couple pages and the blurb.

Areas for growth

I want to work on figuring out better and more specific traits for my character unlike something bland.

Personal Relevance

Analyzing fiction characters traits helps me because I can better understand myself and relate to the character/story. A kind of bad trait I can relate to the main character is that I also like being comfortable and not taking that many risks but sometimes I want to go on some kind of adventure.

Unit 1 Olympic Portfolio Reflection

  1. What did I work on?

During the campaign for the Olympics unit, I worked on researching our host Olympic city and country by using the SAS databases. I worked on improving my speaking skills. I worked on my positive collaboration skills with my chosen partner. I worked on using persuasive sentence frames to convince the IOC to select my host city/country for the 2036 summer Olympic games in Seoul, South Korea. I worked on memorizing my script and speaking loudly. I worked on creating a Canva presentation with six criterion slides and using SAS databases photos.

  1. What did I learn? Why do global sporting events exist?

Global sporting events exist because they can unite countries positively and make global competitions. It can also boost the economy of the host country and showcase the country’s culture as well. The Olympics also provide entertainment and promote healthy new sports to the public. It also increases the wealth of companies as well as their stocks.

  1. What worked well?

I am proud of my Canva presentation, as it was detailed and well made. I am also proud of my script as well as spending a lot of time on it and I think it was very detailed with key ideas. And I think I was successful with my logo design.

  1. What did not work well?

Something that didn’t work well was the researching. It was hard finding the right information especially about food, and I spent a bit too much time on getting it done and I felt like I had to edit it quite a lot as I was practicing speaking.

  1. Personal Relevance

Collaboration and communications skills are important for my future because when I am in university and in a job, I would need to work with other people to solve problems and make presentations.

Nonfiction Writing Reflection-Paragraph Structure

What are we doing? An academic paragraph about a character trait

What are we learning? Paragraph Structure (Topic Sentence, Transitions, Conclusion)

Successes

Before, I used first person words Such as “I” but now I write it formally in third person format. I also wrote a excellent topic sentence and 3 examples.

Areas for growth

I want to improve on my conclusion and not add any new topics that wasn’t included in my paragraph.

Personal Relevance

This is important because I would have to write lots of academic paragraphs until I graduate and even in College.
