Unit 2 Otzi Unit Portfolio Reflection

  1. What did I work on?

During this unit, ‘Why should we care about the past?’, I worked on

  • Making observations, inferences, and wonderings.
  • Using photos and articles as evidence.
  • Writing a CER paragraph.
  • Asking and answering open and closed questions.
  • Taking part in the Otzi Mock Trial, my role was expert witness.
  1. What did I learn? Why should we care about the past?

We should care about the past because……

  • Origin of humans and their culture.
  • Learn how pre-historic people lived.
  • Learn the differences and similarities.
  • People in the past were very resourceful.
  • People in the past were very innovative.
  • People in the past were very skilled.
  •
  1. What worked well?

I am proud of the following work Final CER, Mock trial and open and closed questions.

I am proud of the final CER because I spent a lot of time on it, and I put in a lot of thought to make it as believable and professional as possible. I am proud of the mock trial because it was the first time I did a mock trial, and it was really successful. I am proud of mastering the skill of writing and identifying open and closed questions because it was confusing at first, but I still got it at the end.

  1. What did not work well?

I found some of this work challenging open and closed questions and mock trial research.

I found the open and closed questions challenging because the open and closed questions are a little confusing at first and it is a little hard to understand. I found the research of the mock trial challenging because we had limited resources and articles to find evidence of.

  1. Personal Relevance

Collaboration and communications skills are important in my future because we need to use them our whole lives in our jobs and school and family so learning about collaboration and communication skills is vital for my success in my future years.

Math Bake sale!

What did I do?

In general, we had a bake sale. On day one, we chose a recipe and calculated the amounts of each ingredient. On day 2, we got the unit price for each ingredient and the cost per batch. On day 3, We calculated the batch and servings amount and cost. We also calculated the. markup percent and markup cost. We also decided on the sell price. On day 4, we made a pitch to show our work and answer questions.

What did I learn?

I learned that we can’t set the price too high or otherwise the customers won’t want to buy our stuff.

What worked?

All our products sold out, and we made a decent profit.

What did not work?

Unfortunately, most of our Tnaghulu’s sugar melted and it made a very sticky mess.

How is this relevant for me?

I had lots of fun and learned how to apply math to real life.

Science Egg Car Reflection

What did I do?

We built an egg car with 3 sheets of scrap paper, 4 wheels, 2 axles, 1 meter Masking tape ONLY and 1 meter Masking tape ONLY 2 pieces of straw to protect the egg from cracking.

What did I learn?

Newtons first and third law applies to the egg car. According to newtons’ first law the egg wants to fly out of the car when it hits the block, so we built a seat belt as the unbalanced force.  According to newton’s third law we built a crumple zone for the third law because it will lower the force exerted by the car on the wall.

What worked?

The seat belt worked successfully because it kept the egg in place, and it did not fly out. To do that we had to stick 2 pieces of narrows paper onto the car and band it to the egg so it would not move.

What did not work?

The wheels were not successful because they fell off halfway, and it did not run smoothly on the ramp. To solve this problem next time, we can make the car narrower so the wheels can roll better, and we can take off the rubber on the wheel so it will run more smoothly.

Personal Relevance

It is important to know the safety system in a vehicle which helps to keep us safe. When a car crashes, the seat belt is the outside / unbalanced force to keep us from flying forward.

Science Unit 2 Reflection

What did I do?

The balloon car was built using balloon, wheels, cardboard, straws, and axels. We used it to learn about newton’s third law; each action has an equal and opposite reaction. This law applies to the balloon car because the air goes out one way and the car moves in the opposite direction.

What did I learn?

Newton’s 1st Law

The law says an object in rest tends to stay in rest; an object in motion tends to stay in motion unless an unbalanced force is acted on it. We see this law in action with the balloon car when the balloon car is at rest but then we release the air in the balloon which is the unbalanced force then it starts moving.

Newton’s 2nd Law

The law says force equals matter times acceleration. We see this law in action with the balloon car when the balloon is released. It is fast at first but then slows down and stops. This shows the force on the car changed overtime: in the beginning, the balloon blows out the strongest force, and we can observe the balloon car getting faster to a certain speed and when the air runs out slowly there is no pushing force, but there is only the friction so the car will stop.

Newton’s 3rd

The law says each action has an equal and opposite reaction. We see this law in action with the Balloon Car when the air pushes out of the balloon, and the car moves forward (the opposite direction).

What worked?

The assembling part worked well because our car worked and nothing fell apart.

What did not work?

I was a struggle letting the car go in a straight line did not work because we put too much air into the balloon it went out too fast it just turned. To solve this problem, we used less air in the balloon.

Personal relevance?

The Balloon Car is like a jet aircraft in the real world when I fly in an airplane.   I see Newton’s Law 3rd law in real life when I skateboard because when I push on the ground it pushes me forward with the skateboard. It is important to know these Laws because it helps me in the real world to understand forces and how everything moves.

Unit 2 – Growth and Development

Puberty Survival Guide

https://suno.com/s/cPN1GWKAknfGRlNW

This is a song I made to inform people of what puberty is.

Why is it important to learn about puberty?

Learning about puberty is important because it normalizes physical and emotional changes, reduces anxiety, and provides a foundation for future health and relationships. Also, you can learn more about what you are going through and why.

How to identify safe websites?

To identify safe websites, check for “https://” and see if they have privacy policies and clear contact information. If you are really confused, then ask a trusted adult for help.

How to keep clean?

We should brush our teeth and wash our face at least twice a day and wash our hands frequently throughout the day. Also, we should shower at least 2-3 times a week to keep up with our basic hygiene needs.

Creative Writing Reflection

What are we doing?

Writing a fictional story based on a theme that matters to me.

What are we learning?

Theme (my purpose for writing this story, my message to readers)

Character Development (creating believable characters with positive & negative traits)

Plot (the sequence of events in my story; Western and Eastern approaches to storytelling)

Setting (the world that I create for my story)

What’s working?

I really enjoyed thinking and planning my plot because it is very exciting, also I can express my creativity the most in that. The thing that I am most proud of is my character development and my plot because I created a believable character and he learned the lesson I wanted him to. Also, I am really proud of my plot because it is really exciting and it has lots of ups and downs and unexpected turns. I got the idea of the story from a real story my mom told me. My favorite phrase in the story is Daniel does not know if writing is going to make him rich or famous, but he knows for sure that this is what he loves. Best wishes to Danie

Areas for Growth

I think I can improve by adding more descriptions and show not tell technique. I did my best to add as much as I could in the time I have but I think I have a lot to improve on.

Personal Relevance

I think writing creative writing is going to help me improve my creativity skills and thinking out of the box.

Critical Thinking with Gravitrax

What did I do?

I played with Gravitrax to strengthen my critical thinking skills.

What did I learn?

I learned critical thinking uses logic, reasoning, what I already know, asking questions and using creativity to solve problems. For example, in Gravitrax we needed to think critically and figure out a route using the blocks we have and in a limited amount of time (25 min) to successfully let a ball slide through what we have built.

What worked?

I thought critically when we only had a limited number of blocks, but I still used it effectively by not building the structure too high, but it also has a big enough slope for the marble to run through the full cores.

What did not work?

I struggled with time management. When I was building the structure, I forgot about time and had to rush at the end and build a thing that needed way more than 25 min to complete properly. So next time I can use this experience and build something inside the time range.

Personal Relevance

Today’s learning will help me in making big decisions and solving problems in life. For example, when I grow up and decide to buy a house or not, I need to use critical thinking in ways like how much money I already have and how much do I need to buy a house, can I support the house if I buy it etc. So, all in all, I think critical thinking is a very vital skill to learn.

Fiction Reading – Character Analysis

What are we doing?

Reading Jolly Foul Play and determining important character traits

What are we learning?

How to analyze character traits ( Character Actions, Thoughts, Dialogue, and Other Characters’ Reactions)

What’s working?

I analyzed a major trait of your character. I also chose relevant evidence that strongly supports your analysis.

Areas for growth

I need to improve on identifying character traits that change over time and identifying different kinds of evidence for the character trait. For example, I only used dialogue this time for all my evidence, and I want to improve on that and use things like character actions, thoughts, and other characters’ reactions.

Personal Relevance

By doing character analysis in books, it can help me understand myself and others better because I know by reading that all people do not matter how good they are, they have bad in them and in contrast no matter how annoying they are there is good in them. So, when I am really frustrated with myself or others I can just focus on the good traits and feel better about other people or myself.

Nonfiction Writing Reflection – Paragraph Structure

What are we doing?

An academic paragraph about a character trait

What are we learning?

Paragraph Structure (Topic Sentence, Transition, Conclusion)

What’s working?

I have a focused topic sentence clearly identifying the main idea. All of my evidence is effectively introduced with appropriate transitions. My conclusion succinctly wraps up the paragraph with a solid paraphrase of the topic sentence.

Areas for Growth

I need to improve on writing a fabulous academic paragraph like the one I wrote but without any help like the sentence starters and transition words.

Personal Relevance

I think this will be important in my life because we are going to do a lot of academic paragraphs later in school all the way up to university. So, knowing how to write an academic paragraph is very important.
