Unit 2 Reflection & Semester Check-In (Pt. 2: Goals)

Last unit, my goal was double checking my work all the time.

How well did I work toward this goal?
☐ Somewhat

Always reminding myself to double-check my answers helped me make progress towards this goal, however, in some cases, I didn’t have enough time to double-check, which is why I only somewhat did well on this goal.

Time management got in the way of this goal, as sometimes I spend a lot of time answering hard questions during the test, with little to no time left for double-checking.

Three strengths I have shown last semester were turning my work in on time, participating in class, and reviewing feedback thoughtfully.

Three areas I still want to improve on are double-checking my work, expanding my learning for L4s, and learning to use the calculator, as the new one is quite complicated.

In the next unit, I want to be able to get 4s on my test and make improvements on my critical thinking for word problems. Something that could get in the way of this goal would be not practicing math much outside of class that could improve my way of thinking. If I get stuck, I will reach out to my math teacher for help.

Unit 2 Reflection & Semester Check-In

I chose Question 1 (critical thinking) as evidence of my best thinking because I got it right and I had a thorough explanation, which shows my understanding of causation and correlation. I explained clearly how moderate strength could really affect music listeners and connected it with real-life situations.

I chose Question 2 as evidence of my best thinking because I can match equations with graphs, which is a significant part of this unit and demonstrates how I can input equations into any type of graph to verify their accuracy.

Throughout Unit 2, I improved the most in looking at and describing scatter plots, understanding DOTS, and determining whether a relationship is strong or not.

One skill from this unit that I still need to work on is expanding my thinking, as my L4 got 3.5, and to think about relationships with more complex situations, and debunking claims by figuring out what’s wrong with them.

The biggest challenge for me on this assessment was finding the direction of a graph that is more moderately horizontal. I find it hard knowing if it’s negative or not.

One strategy that helped me on this test was always remembering ‘DOTS’ if I ever needed to describe a graph, going through the letters to make sure I don’t miss a factor.

            Math: Piecewise Function Project

My story was about a coffee shop and its earnings, as well as how it relates to the real world. It’s modeled after real shops in terms of earnings as well as the rate of customers.

The part of my project that I’m most proud of is the storytelling part, as my partner and I have worked hard on coming up with brainstorms and writing it in detail so it’s like a real-life scenario.

The hardest part was making the graph fit directly according to the story, as the story says that they earned less while the graph went down, showing how they’re losing money, which is not accurate.

If I could revise one part of this project, it would be the questions and the axis on the graph. I would change the part of the x-axis, as writing about the earnings overall would be easier than graphing only the profits.

This project helped me understand piecewise functions in general, as before I didn’t know a thing about it and its meaning, while this project gave me an opportunity to practice graphing with a new concept.

Unit 3 Health: Identity and Healthy Relationships

The purpose of this unit is to analyze media relationships to identify red flags while also trying to spread the word of what a healthy relationship should be like. My conclusions from my analysis are that the relationship of Bella and Edward in Twilight is unhealthy and that in order for a healthy relationship, both parties should feel safe and respected within their relationship.

One of the most important ideas I learned from this unit was boundaries, which is things partners set to feel safe within a relationship, for example, saying they don’t like physical touch.

Another important Idea is gender identity, as gender identity is what people think they are even after being assigned with a gender, and doesn’t have to be the same gender as they were when they were born, and how even after birth, anybody can be any gender they want without being judged.

Another important key idea is consent. Consent is when both parties agree with an enthusiastic ‘yes!’ and both side wants it. Consent is very important as without it, the reltionships can become very toxic and unwanted/one sided. This is important as it can help with my relationships in the future.

PE: Unit 3 Soccer + Invasive Games

In this unit, we had many topics such as striking and fielding, and soccer. We learned how to play baseball and how to catch/throw a ball correctly. We also learned how to control the soccer ball and play a game effectively, following rules and collaborating effectively.

            PE: Unit 2 Swimming

In this unit we learned how to float and play water polo. In this unit of swimming we learned how to do the egg beater kick and how to keep ourselves afloat during a game of water polo. We learned the rules of water polo and how to effectively collaborate with our peers. Before this unit, I didn’t know how to play water polo, but after this unit, I now know how to efficiently pass the ball to my teammates and how to score goals. Something I’d like to improve on is my basic swimming skills since I can’t swim very fast and run out of stamina quickly.

            Health Unit 2: Mental Illnesses

In this unit of health, we learned about mental illnesses/disorders, which are: PTSD, OCD, Depression, Anxiety, and Eating Disorders.

At first, I used to think mental health meant someone was just having a bad time and was struggling to get over it, and I assumed that depression was just being sad, and OCD was just being overly neat.

But after this unit, I now know that mental illnesses are very impactful and not a thing to joke around with or not take seriously. I was in the OCD group, and the new information I learned was that OCD was compulsions not only for being organized, but also that it’s a cycle and can impact someone’s life a lot. For example, in class, Ms. Miller shared that her sister had OCD and had to microwave food 12 times before eating it, and that shows how impactful OCD can be. OCD is a cycle of repetitive actions that try to aim for dopamine, or some sort of reward. and slowly becomes a problem as without doing the exact cycle can cause stress. My thinking changed because my group and I did research on OCD and listened to other groups’ presentations. This helped me learn about all the other disorders. What surprised me the most was that there are multiple types of eating disorders, because at first, I thought there was only one, and that someone with an eating disorder just wants to diet themselves. This unit has changed how I view others, as now I take mental issues seriously. Social media had oversimplified all of them, and therefore, they have a negative stigma.

            Math: Unit 1 Project-Sticker Making

In Unit One Integrated Math, we learned about figure transformations. Using this knowledge, we made a sticker based on geometric translations. What I liked about this project was the freedom, as I was allowed to make a sticker of anything I liked, so I decided to choose a strawberry shortcake design.

Something I wished was different was how we started the project and the lessons. I think the choice boards are not the best choice for learning, as I think mini lessons do a better job. Making the sticker and updating it each lesson is also flawed, as many people forget, so I think we should begin it after all the lessons instead, as then we wouldn’t need to draw so many drafts that take an unnecessary amount of time.

Math: Unit 1 Reflection and Goal Setting

I chose question 5 (identify one additional piece of information needed to prove the triangles are congruent) as evidence of my best thinking because in class, there was a similar question in a practice document, and I struggled with it. I spent a long time trying to understand how to use ASA, SAS, SSS, and AAS, so I was very proud that I got all of them correct.

I chose question 8 (identify the imposter triangle) as evidence of my best thinking because I wrote a long explanation by using proper math vocabulary and symbols, such as the congruent symbol and the ‘<>’ symbols. This was also a challenge for me during class time, so I was very proud when I got it right on the test.

Throughout this unit, I improved the most at ASA, SSS, SAS, and AAS techniques because before I was completely confused and needed help from my friends, but after a few classes, I could understand it fully.

I feel that I still need to work on reflecting a figure over a line that is not horizontal or vertical, and try to work on reflecting over a diagonal line, as in my summative test, I couldn’t do the last L4 question because I didn’t know how to reflect over the line, y=x.

Three of my strengths so far this year are being able to collaborate with people that are not my friends/acquaintances, being able to translate figures, and being able to use SAS, ASA, SSS, and AAS to prove triangle congruency.

Three things I want to improve on in the next unit are asking more questions, being more active in class, and finishing homework earlier and not doing it last minute.

In the next unit, I want to be more active in class by raising my hand, asking questions, participating in activities, etc. Something that might get in the way of this goal is confidence, as sometimes I’m not confident enough to raise my hand or speak in front of the class. When I get stuck or need help, I can use breathing exercises, or sitting with my friends for reassurance.
