Practical Project Reflection

As I prepare to embark on the project of building a mini drag race car, I can’t help but feel excited about the learning journey ahead. This project isn’t just a fun hands-on activity; it’s an opportunity to dive deep into Newton’s second law of motion, which states that the acceleration of an object depends on the net force acting upon it and its mass.

Understanding this principle is crucial as I design and construct my car. I’ll need to consider factors like weight distribution, materials, and the forces at play when my car launches down the track. The practical application of these concepts makes learning feel more tangible and relevant.

I’m particularly eager to see how different designs impact performance. By experimenting with various weights and shapes, I can directly witness how changes affect acceleration and speed. This process of trial and error will not only deepen my understanding of physics but also enhance my problem-solving skills.

Moreover, collaborating with classmates will make this project even more enriching. Sharing ideas and strategies will help us all grow and learn from one another. I’m looking forward to the challenge and the thrill of racing our creations. This project promises to be a rewarding blend of fun, teamwork, and scientific discovery.

Extracurricular Reflection

UTR Tennis

As a student deeply immersed in UTR tennis tournaments and practicing five times a week, I often reflect on what this commitment means for me. Playing in tournaments every Saturday fills me with a mix of excitement and nerves. Each match is a chance to showcase my skills and learn from my experiences, whether I win or lose.

The pressure of competition pushes me to bring my best self to the court. I enjoy the challenge of facing different opponents, each match teaching me something new about my game and mental resilience. I’ve learned to embrace setbacks as opportunities for growth, which has helped me both in tennis and in my studies.

My practice sessions are where the real work happens. They’re intense but rewarding, allowing me to refine my technique and strategy. The bonds I’ve formed with my teammates add to the joy of the sport. We motivate each other to push through tough practices, celebrating our small victories together.

Overall, this journey through tennis has shaped my character. The discipline I cultivate on the court translates to my academic life, teaching me the importance of hard work and perseverance. I’m excited to see how far this passion will take me.

Resilience Reflection – Apprenticeship

Expeiriencing a setback prompt

Experiencing a setback in my learning was particularly challenging, especially when I received poor results on an important assignment. This moment was disheartening, as I had invested a significant amount of time and effort into my studies. Initially, I felt a wave of disappointment and self-doubt, questioning my abilities and whether I was cut out for the challenges of my academic program. However, I understood that failure is a part of the learning process, and I needed to approach this setback constructively. To recover, I took a proactive approach by analyzing my mistakes and seeking help from my instructor to understand where I went wrong. This conversation was enlightening, as my instructor provided valuable feedback and resources for improvement. I also dedicated extra time to revise my study methods, experimenting with different techniques, such as active recall and spaced repetition, to enhance my retention of material. Additionally, I set specific goals for improvement, which helped me focus my efforts and track my progress. This process taught me resilience and the importance of adaptability in the face of failure. I learned that setbacks can be opportunities for growth, and with the right mindset, I can overcome challenges and emerge stronger. Moving forward, I aim to embrace failures as stepping stones to success, knowing that each experience can contribute to my overall development.

Communication Reflection – Apprenticeship

Mentor Conversation prompt

I recall a moment where I had to listen actively to a mentor during a critical discussion about my extracurricals. This conversation was pivotal, as I was at a crossroads and needed guidance. By focusing intently on their words, I made a conscious effort to eliminate distractions and fully engage in the dialogue. I maintained eye contact and nodded in acknowledgment, demonstrating my active participation. I also asked clarifying questions to ensure I understood their points correctly, which fostered a deeper discussion. This active engagement not only made the conversation more meaningful but also allowed me to receive tailored guidance that addressed my specific concerns. My mentor shared their experiences and insights, which illuminated potential paths I had not considered before. The outcome was invaluable; I gained clearer insights and felt more confident in my decisions moving forward. This experience highlighted how effective listening can significantly enhance communication and understanding in any interaction. I realized that listening is not just about hearing words; it’s about understanding the context and emotions behind them. This lesson has encouraged me to refine my listening skills further, recognizing that they are essential for building strong relationships and fostering collaborative environments in both academic and professional settings.

Critical Thinking reflection – Apprenticeship

To ensure I consider all relevant perspectives in my projects, I employ several self-check strategies that have proven effective. First, I often create lists of different viewpoints associated with a topic, brainstorming ideas that may not immediately come to mind. This practice encourages me to think critically and diversely, challenging any preconceived notions I may hold. Additionally, I make it a point to seek feedback from peers and mentors, recognizing that their insights can provide valuable perspectives that I might overlook. Engaging in discussions with others allows me to broaden my understanding and refine my thoughts. Moreover, I incorporate reflective practices into my routine. Before finalizing my conclusions, I take time to reflect on the information I have gathered and ask myself whether any biases are affecting my judgment. I often use journal entries to articulate my thoughts, which helps in clarifying my reasoning. This thorough approach, combined with an open mind, allows me to arrive at well-rounded conclusions that acknowledge diverse opinions. I find that this method not only enriches my analysis but also prepares me for potential counterarguments, making my work more robust. Ultimately, I have learned that considering multiple perspectives is essential for making informed decisions, and I intend to continue employing these strategies in my future academic and professional endeavors.

Collaboration Reflection – Apprenticeship

During one of the group activities in the collaboration tasks, I encountered a major disagreement with my partner regarding the way we would go about completing the task. We both had different visions for how we wanted it to go, and both intended to prove to the other that our respectively would be the better way to go. This led to tension and frustration between us, causing us nothing but regression in progress. Upon realising this, we decided to sit down and discuss properly, making conscious efforts to listen and participate, allowing both of us to express our viewpoints while keeping respectful and open-minded. It helped us to start a brainstorming session where we evaluated the pros and cons of both our ideas, creating clarity and a better space to fully understand what was going on. Through this discussion we managed to settle upon some sort of common ground and compromise, allowing us to start making progress. In the end, the result combined both our ideas improving it significantly from what it could’ve been. This experience showed us the importance of open communication and collaboration in resolving conflicts. I learned that disagreements can lead to innovative solutions when approached constructively. In future team settings, I plan to apply this lesson by promoting open dialogue and actively seeking to understand my teammates’ perspectives, which ultimately fosters a more productive working environment.

Creativity Reflection – Apprenticeship

To reflect on a time when my creativity was challenged, I remember one of the apprenticeship tasks that I had poured my heart into. I was passionate about the drawing, (design of a book cover) and I invested several hours into developing it. However, when I presented my work to a few peers, I received significant critique from them. Initially, I was defensive; I felt a wave of self-doubt wash over me. It was difficult to accept that something I was so proud of could be perceived as lacking. However, I realized that feedback, no matter how harsh, is crucial for growth. Instead of shutting down or dismissing the critique, I decided to distance myself from my work, and take a step back to analyze the comments objectively. I made a list of the major feedback points and turned them into actionable items. I focused on identifying specific areas where improvement was needed. By incorporating the suggestions, I made substantial changes to the project, ultimately enhancing its quality. This experience taught me that constructive criticism can be a powerful tool for development. Embracing feedback rather than fearing it has become a valuable lesson for me. I learned that being open to critique not only strengthens my work but also changes your mindset and makes you much more positive. Moving forward, I am now more inclined to seek out feedback proactively and view it as an opportunity to refine my skills.

Laser Cut Design Reflection

As a part of our learning lab maker space introduction, we learned how to use Inkscape and the laser cutters in the maker space lab.

For my design, I first collected a silhouette image from online and added it to a page in Inkscape, where I prepared it for laser cutting. This included tracing the bitmap of the image, sizing it correctly, and separating/connecting certain parts of the design.

For me, the main challenge was finding an image that was suitable for Inkscape, and transforming it in such a way that it could be read by the laser cutter and successfully cut. Eventually, I figured this out and I’m now capable of doing this for a variety of different graphics.

The things that went well were my choice of design, as I think it was not extremely complex, yet still very impactful and easy to understand. I think I could have sized it differently, I feel that the size is slightly too large for the moment.

In my next design, I will focus on sizing my work correctly and potentially selecting a different, more complex design that could be more impactful/develop more useful laser cutter skills than I now have.

The TTGs that I feel I used most were collaborator, communicator, and resilient. I found that other members of the class helped me out when I was unsure of how to go about things, I thought I was resilient when it came to overcoming boundaries and stepping outside my comfort zone to make something meaningful.

Smart use of AI – development goals

My future AI goal is to use artificial intelligence for inspiration in my school work and personal projects, but understand balance, and add my own ideas and style to make my work unique. This AI goal connects to my current skills in creativity and critical thinking by allowing me to decide when it is essential to input my own content into my work. I will speak to my learning lab teacher to help me stay on track with this goal.
