I organize my time and plan ahead to make sure that I allow enough time to get everything done.
Stress Resilience:
When I face a life challenge, I feel confident that I handle the accompanying stress in a healthy way.
Healthy Relationships:
I am able to resolve conflict in a productive way with family and friends. We are able to talk through conflict so that it does not continue.
Rest and Play:
I am confident that the amount of time I spend connected to technology such as video games, TV, computer, Facebook, and cell phone is good for my overall well-being.
Handling Emotions:
I am able to share all of my emotions (including sadness, happiness, fear, and worry) with people I trust.
Spirituality:
I am involved in an activity that really matters to me.
School and Work:
I am personally happy with my grades.
Care for the Body:
The choices I make about what I eat and drink are healthy.
Over the past week, we were supposed to work on one of the statements in the “Healthy Relationships” section of our wellness compasses. The statement I chose to work on was: “I am able to resolve conflict in a productive way with family and friends. We are able to talk through conflict so that it does not continue”. I chose this statement because it was the statement I scored lowest on at a 5.
Every day I took some time to breath and practice ways to resolve conflicts. I worked towards achieving my wish by treating conflicts like normal conversations that didn’t need to be heated. I was able to sit down and talk to my parents about doing my homework and being productive. One morning when I didn’t have something finished for school, I did rush my mom and we had a bit of an argument because she was busy and needed to leave.
Conclusion
I think I made good progress towards my wish but I could have dealt with some of the situations in a more mature manner. For example instead of rushing my mom in the morning I could have either asked earlier or calmly asked what could have been done.
The biggest obstacle I experienced was not getting enough sleep which lead to irritability. This would make me more agitated when talking to others which made it more difficult to calm down.
The topic my group presented and researched was depression. Throughout this process I learnt how common depression was and how much it affects daily life. Some symptoms are losing interest in things you used to enjoy, fatigue, and changes in sleeping and eating habits. I used to think it was difficult for people with depression to reach out just because of the effects of the condition but I realized that a part of it is the stigma that they have and that society has.
Anxiety
From the presentation in anxiety I learned about how people with it experience worry, restlessness, and a rapid heartbeat. I learnt how Generalized Anxiety Disorder makes you worry about every day issues and panic disorders can cause panic attacks. Some treatment methods were mindfulness and self-care. It helped me realize how different variants of anxiety were.
PTSD
Common symptoms are flashbacks of the traumatic event, ongoing negative emotions, and feeling detached from social groups. The group helped me understand how alone you can feel when you have PTSD both because of stigma and differences in past experienced. I learnt about treatment in the form of cognitive behavioural therapy and cognitive processing therapy whereas before I thought it was untreatable.
Eating Disorders
The group covered the eating disorders of anorexia, binge eating, and bulimia. They talked about how EDs can cause extreme weightloss, fear of gaining weight, purging, and body dysphoria. Treatments being therapy such as CBT and nutrition counseling. I learnt that it is classified as a mood disorder whereas I didn’t think about it before.
Bipolar Disorder
The presentation on bipolar disorder showed the most common signs being mood swings and changes in energy and behaviour. I also learned that this disorder is extremely misrepresented in the media, often portraying those with bipolar as murders. I learned about how mania seems happy however, this is not often the case.
OCD
Some symptoms of OCD are uncontrollable recurring thoughts, compulsions, and uncontrollable thoughts. Treatment is psychotherapy and antidepressants which can help people move past their compulsions. I learnt about the true severity of the condition and how it impacts daily lives rather than it just being a need to have everything be perfectly organized.
Why Mental Health is Important
Mental health is important for us to live sustainable lives where we aren’t constantly under pressure and stress. It also allows us to support the development of our brains and our physical health. And it’s important to be knowledgeable about mental health conditions so we don’t stigmatize others and know how to help ourselves and others.
The purpose of my conference is to show you the work I’ve done over the last year and how I’ve grown in various subjects. I’d like to show you some of my goals and how they apply to the TTGs (Transdisciplinary Transfer Goals).
I’d like to share:
What I’ve done and what I still want to achieve
Some areas of growth, struggles, and some of my work
My goals and how I plan to achieve them
My Vision Board
My I am board from the start of the year adapted as a vision board
Some of the things included on my vision board are:
Swimming
Crochet
Art
A book
Planning drawing
These are important because: they represent my hobbies and passions along with what I hope to accomplish this year.
My Goals Are:
Start all homework on the day it’s assigned
Make time for hobbies (at least an hour each day)
Reduce screen time related procrastination
Here is evidence of how I was able to start to make progress towards my goals.
Start all homework on the day it’s assigned
Assigned work on the day of
Started homework right after school
Looked at instructions the day of
Make time for hobbies (at least an hour each day)
Removed distractions to finish work quickly
Did an activity I enjoyed after finishing one assignment
Reduce screen time
Downloaded multiple extensions
Transdisciplinary Transfer Goal (TTG)

How useful is my science notebook as a learning tool?
My science notebook became more useful over time as I set reminders to update my table of context, my work and note taking also became clearer as a result.
Recently for health class we needed to use an app or extension that would align with one of our wishes relating to a wellness category. After using it for two weeks, we then wrote a review for how effective it was during that time.
For health class itself, continue having detailed portfolio posts and using portfolios to the best of my ability. For my goals and applying what we’ve learnt, I think I could have had a more specific goal and chosen a better extension for what I was trying to do.
In health we learned about the stress response, the different parts of our brains, and how to cope with stress in a healthy way. To do this we learnt about thought models where negative and unproductive thoughts lead to the repetition of behaviors.
Thought Model:
Reframed thoughts of long-term retention
Understood how to correctly create a thought model
Why I Chose This Artifact:
Shows how I rewrote my thinking
Shows understanding of thinking traps
How it Demonstrates Growth:
Being able to reframe thoughts to a more positive light
Learned about results and and creating positive feedback loops
Steps to Take:
Implement the model in everyday life to reframe thoughts. Transform thought models into WOOP (Wish Outcome Obstacle Plan) goals.
In design tech at the end of the semester we experimented with the robots on Vex IQ to accomplish speed, maze, and sumo challenges. Sumo included both autonomous and controlled rounds.
Forticopter:
Won a majority of sumo rounds
had an extra motor on the bottom for more weight
Was unstable and had questionable cable management
Another robot made ours fling itself off the platform
Code for the Maze:
Solved the maze quickly initially
Couldn’t solve specific maze types
Second iteration that could follow walls
Didn’t finish in time
Bumper didn’t work
Why I Chose This Artifact:
Fun unit
Allowed me to be familiarized with Vex
How it Demonstrates Growth:
Applied variable considerations
Ideated multiple maze solutions
Steps to Take:
Continue learning Vex IQ and attend robotics in the future. Create more concise code and use cable management tools. Set robots’ center of mass closer to the ground.
For design tech last semester we needed to create a tissue box that would fit the design specifications we were given. I had the design movement art deco which included gold, silver, gray, black, and brown colors.
My Evaluation of Other Designs on the Market:
Creating my Own Expectations:
My Planning Drawings:
My Prototypes and Final Assembly:
My Final Evaluation:
Why I Chose This Artifact:
Made up a large part of the semester
Fun to create something tangible
How it Demonstrates Growth:
Multiple iterations and plans
Learned how to use Inkscape
Steps to Take:
Continue developing design skills and learning how to Inkscape more efficiently and with more complex designs. I could also be more specific in my designing so that the pattern would be easily replicated.
