Alexandra's Portfolio :)

Keep calm and be cool

HS Wellness Portfolio

Organization: I have a good method of remembering all of my assignments and other obligations.

Stress Resilience: I set realistic goals for myself.

Healthy Relationships: I am happy with my friendships and other social connections.

Rest and Play: On a regular basis I get enough rest to energize myself.

Handling Emotions: People who know me would say I handle my emotions in a healthy way.

Spirituality: I forgive others and forgive myself.

School and Work: I am personally happy with my grades.

Care for the Body: I am proud of the amount of respect I pay to my body overall.

WOOP Goal #2

For my 2nd WOOP goal, I wanted to resolve conflict in a productive way. The wellness compass statement I used was “I am able to resolve conflict in a productive way with family and friends. We are able to talk through conflict so it does not continue.” The outcome I wanted was to resolve conflicts, especially with my brother. We are close in age, which means we fight more over little things like the last cookie. The obstacle I expected was that my emotions would impact my response to the conflict. When it happened though, I took deep breaths and spoke calmly, just like in my plan. It worked, and we resolved a conflict with my brother (We were fighting over the last cookie, and in the end we each got half).

Unit 2: Tech, Media, and Mental Health

I used to think that social media had an accurate representation of mental health issues, seeing that there were so many posts and videos talking about it. Now I realize that even though people might share their ideas and knowledge online, some of them are a bit stereotypical and don’t always apply to everyone. I learned about the various stigmatizations that occur as a result of social media.

During the research period of the presentation, I learned a lot about the Bipolar Disorder, especially on the symptoms and how they can affect someone’s everyday life. Some of the symptoms we learned about was mood swings and sudden change in emotions.

Something that surprised me was that the people with Bipolar Disorder around 1 in 150 adults, or around 40 million people, which is quite a lot.

MY VISION BOARD

This is my vision board ✨

I included lots of pictures of volleyball because it’s my main sport, and one of my favorite things to do. I included pictures of my volleyball team and my friends, because I’m grateful to have such a good team to play with!! Finally, I put pictures related to cooking and healthy lifestyles because I think it’s important to have good habits to have a happy life. I like cooking and experimenting with healthy food recipes, too.

My goals are:

  1. Take organized notes and study for harder subjects
  2. Always attempt at least a meeting
  3. Jump float serve

Transdisciplinary Transfer Goals (TTGs)

My TTG this year is Creative Learner.

Math

This is a screenshot of my grades of the first 2 units from schoology. While creating the artifact (achieving the grades), I learned how to see if a triangle is congruent, and how to map out/explain transformations. On top of all the academic information, it helps me a lot if I organize my notes at home. One challenge I faced was lack of tutoring at home, but I was able to overcome that difficulty by studying on my own.

Before CNY break, we had a final project, which was to design a word problem and solve it using function notation. I wrote my word problem on a girl selling lemonade at her school’s international fair, and made it about how much money she earned from the fair. I learned how to make my own problem during this assignment, and I found it to be fun and engaging.

My growth in the Active Learner section is shown in the gradebook. In semester 1, I had 3 late assignments, but in semester 2, I organized my time better and had none.

Evidence of Understanding Key Concepts

Based on the scores I got for 3 for 3, I mostly have a solid understanding of the class material. However, sometimes I miss a small question or concept, which can be improved by studying.

Evidence of Growth in Science Skills

Standard 1: Developing and Using Models

Standard 2: Constructing Explanations and Designing Solution

Standard 3: Engaging in Argument from Evidence

Standard 4: Asking Questions and Designing Problems

Standard 5: Using Mathematics and Computational Thinking

Standard 6: Obtaining, Evaluating and Communicating Information

ELA

For one of my reading/writing passports, I made an author introduction. It is about Angie Thomas, the author for The Hate U Give. I chose this author because after I read The Hate U Give, I liked the way she used her personal experiences and put them in the book to make it more realistic.

This is my essay on the 3 short stories I read. I had to connect all 3 stories to real life. My dilemma was a group project where you were doing all the work. You had the choice to either tell the teacher and potentially getting your friends in trouble, or staying with an unfair grade. The 3 stories I read were all loosely related to my problem, and I was able to write the essay.

SOCIAL STUDIES

  1. What the artifact is

This is my opening argument for the debate motion: “Should juvenile offenders be tried as adults in the United States?” I wrote this during our debate unit as the first speaker for opposition team. One challenge I faced was writing a good introduction. In the end, I settled on starting with some numerical data. A piece of feedback i received during the speech itself was to slow down my talking pace, and I kept that in mind for future reference, including for the ELA speeches. I chose this piece of work to show that I incorporated the feedback i was given.

This is my essay on the psychological impact of ww1 on soldiers. We did a unit of WW1, and I wrote my final essay about shellshock and psychological trauma caused by WW1. I started with a lot of research regarding the psychological impacts on the soldiers, then moved on to writing the 3 paragraphs. I used evidence and quotes in all 3 paragraphs` and it took me a while to organize the information.

P.E

This is a picture of a volleyball game. During our volleyball unit this year, we played lots of small matches competitively and for fun. We also did some practices and passing drills during warm-ups. At the end of each class were the friendly matches.

HEALTH

We learned a lot about psychology so far such as the FFF (Fight, flight, freeze) effect, that stress has a big impact on our lives, and negative thinking traps). I also learned a lot about myself. One of the assignments we had was to use a digital app for 7 days that helped with our WOOP goal. I used Me+, an app that helps with organizing tasks and time management. I learned that I am more inclined to use an app that is visually appealing, which is why Me+ worked so well for me. It had colorful aesthetics and a wide range of emojis to choose from, and the color-coding made it nice to look at when I logged on every day. It has helped me organize my activities and easily sort out what I have to complete.

SPANISH

This was a poster about healthy habits. We researched about different things you can do to stay healthy and fit every day. We made an informative poster and added images to support the topics, using commands to talk about the healthy habits.

For this assignment, we are talking about a person called Miguel. Miguel went to the hospital and we are discussing about why. We used the verb DOLER (to hurts) and our vocabulary from the wellness unit (e.g., la cabeza, ) to describe what was happening with Miguel.

ART

This is my planning sheet for a clay sculpture I made. We learned how to use the coiling technique and incorporated that into our sketches. The coiling technique involves rolling out long, snake-like pieces of clay and stacking them to create the desired form.

ORCHESTRA

Passion Project

My passion project this year is hosting a showcase for middle schoolers. We wanted to encourage people who get stage fright to perform. We had an audition process and made a group chat for further communication. We also got the help of Ms. Anneliese, the high school dance theater. We asked for her advice and tips on how to organize a successful showcase. The final performance will be on 3/25 at 3:30 at the High School Black Box Theater.

Strengths/Areas of improvement

  1. Organizing list of assignments –> Microsoft To-Do
  2. Focusing and staying on track –> Pomodoro Timer

L4 Wellness App Review

The app has a list-like system. It is easy to use and looks aesthetic. You add daily tasks and check it off when you complete it.

· What are the basic features? What are the advanced features?

The app has many variations of how you want to show your to-do list, such as emojis and color coding. You can also set a time throughout the day to complete the task, or choose to repeat it at the same time everyday. You can turn on reminders and get notifications that remind you to log your progress, and add subtasks underneath big tasks. The app also offers some fun quizzes and tools to help mental health, such as sleep-inducing music, self-reflections, and basic exercises.

The app supports my WOOP goal of Organization because it helps me keep track of my tasks and maintain well-organized habits. It shows me what I have to accomplish today, and lists out things clearly so that I don’t get overwhelmed trying to remember everything.

This app helped me develop healthy habits to improve emotional health and stress resilience because in a way, it uses the process of addiction to make you stick to your goals. For this app, once you start using it, it’s easier to just keep going and keep your streak (similar to Duolingo).

This app improves your brain health because by laying out all your tasks before you, it shows how many things you have to do and sets your brain into a “work” mode.

This app actually uses an addictive design, as I’ve mentioned before. However, the use of this technique is what keeps users on task and on track with their goals in life.

I think this app is very helpful because it makes sure you finish your tasks. Additionally, the dopamine rush after clicking the check mark of a task is nice because you’ll feel accomplished and proud of yourself for achieving at least one of your goals.

The long-term impact of this app is better organization. Now, I wake up and read through my tasks out of habit. Throughout the day, I add check marks to the things I’ve completed, and make a note to finish my other tasks. It has helped me organize my time much better, and I now feel like I have enough time to finish everything.

Health

Unit 1: Psychology of Stress

This unit I learned that the prefrontal cortex doesn’t fully develop until a person’s mid-twenties, and that it is the logical part of the brain that makes good decisions. I also learned that when our Amygdala is triggered, it sets off an an FFF (Fight, flight, freeze) effect on us that influences our next actions. Additionally, we learned that stress has a big impact on our lives. It helps us avoid danger, but also causes pressure on us that might end up badly (cause negative thinking traps) if not dealt with properly. At the end of the unit, we learned some helpful ways to positively deal with stress, such as exercise, journalling, eating healthy, and meditation.

BOX design

We are designing a box to hold our game pieces in. We are using cardboard boxes and hot glue. First,  we trace and cut out the outline of the box. Then, we use hot glue to connect the pieces together. I am being safe by closing the knife when i don’t need it, and I have learned to use a little more force with the knife on the cardboard.

Board Game Planning

We are planning to build a board game with recycled materials and use 3D printers to make what we need. This project will teach us how to engage with our creative side, and cause us to think critically in ways that we haven’t before. We have to plan, then build this board game, which involves lots of ethical choices to make us better people.

Inkscape Snowflake~❄️

Here is the snowflake I made on the Inkscape app, which allows you to draw and create art. The next step to this project is for me to print and laser cut it into a Christmas tree ornament, which I will hang on my tree. 🙂

Welcome to Your New Portfolio!

Why have a digital portfolio at SAS?

Creating a portfolio, or blog is a great way to collect all the work you’ve done throughout your academic career. You can include academic, athletic, and personal artifacts or experiences that you want to share with a wider audience. This is a great way to organize all your learning in one place and you can take it with you when you leave SAS.  When you make your portfolio, you create posts that are categorized according to your subject. Some categories have already been set up for you, but if you need more categories you can add them as needed. It’s important that your posts have the following:

  • An engaging title – this should not include the name of the subject since this is referenced in the category. Think of this as the first opportunity to engage and hook your reader!
  • Body – this is where you share your learning. This should include a combination of text and media in the form of images, graphics, and embedded videos. You should always consider how your post looks to your audience. Is it engaging and organized? Do they want to keep reading?
  • Category – select one that has been set for you or add a new category. Posts can have more than one category e.g. Humanities and Myself as a Learner
  • Tags – create tags that can be used as keywords to describe your post. Tags help organize your post a little more! Aim to have 3-5 tags for each post. For example, if you are posting about a novel you wrote, you might want the following tags: #Fiction, #MurderMystery, #Theme, #PlotDiagram
