Making Ice Cream in Science Class

I learned about the way ice cream is made. In science class, we learned about thermal energy and states of matter. When we were making ice cream, we used our knowledge of changing a state of matter to another. The ice cream was liquid, so we put ice and salt around it. The salt melted the ice, drawing heat from the mixture of milk and sugar. With thermal energy removed, the mixture became a solid which was ice cream.

Car Race Reflection

We used our knowledge about ratios and rates on this project. We had to try to make the perfect ratio between the actual time and our predicted time. We walked, timed ourselves, and finally calculating the meters we could walked per second. If i could re-do this project, i would walk with more confidence and walk at the same speed i would usually walk because that was the speed i walked with at the actual race. The units of measure that we used were meters, seconds, and minutes. Some groups that didn’t include notes on their paper messed up seconds and minutes and messed up their pace.

Penguin Nest Project: The Piguin

The African Penguins are endangered because of human activity. Humans have hunted and stole many of their eggs for eating, also mining their guano which helps insulating their bodies and eggs. We are building artificial nests or burrows that insulate their nest from the heat. This way, they can breed safely, and their eggs can also hatch successfully, increasing the population. We built our nest with the materials that insulated the ice cubes best from heat in an experiment. For example, the felt fabric was used as a roof to protect the nest from the heat above.

Math Reflection for McDonalds Performance Assignment.

  1. This project is a performance task assessment. The task was to create a poster showing that McDonalds is not an unhealthy restaurant using graphs given to us.
  1. I did well on the design of the poster, CARP, and provided evidence for each graph.
  1. I need to improve on using my time wisely because I wasted a lot of time choosing a graph that would help my claim. I also need to improve on reading all the directions because I forgot the distributions and only remembered to write them at the last minute, when I reviewed all the instructions.
  1. I used CARP by changing all the colors into either red, yellow, or white. I also aligned all the descriptions of the graph to the bottom of the graphs. I also added a photo of McDonalds Coca Cola cup and put my claim on a McDonalds bag.
  1. Even though tests are more traditional, I prefer performance tasks because they don’t only require knowledge, but also design skills. Tests require more reviewing and memorizing.

Welcome to Your New Portfolio!

Why have a digital portfolio at SAS?

Creating a portfolio, or blog is a great way to collect all the work you’ve done throughout your academic career. You can include academic, athletic, and personal artifacts or experiences that you want to share with a wider audience. This is a great way to organize all your learning in one place and you can take it with you when you leave SAS.  When you make your portfolio, you create posts that are categorized according to your subject. Some categories have already been set up for you, but if you need more categories you can add them as needed. It’s important that your posts have the following:

  • An engaging title – this should not include the name of the subject since this is referenced in the category. Think of this as the first opportunity to engage and hook your reader!
  • Body – this is where you share your learning. This should include a combination of text and media in the form of images, graphics, and embedded videos. You should always consider how your post looks to your audience. Is it engaging and organized? Do they want to keep reading?
  • Category – select one that has been set for you or add a new category. Posts can have more than one category e.g. Humanities and Myself as a Learner
  • Tags – create tags that can be used as keywords to describe your post. Tags help organize your post a little more! Aim to have 3-5 tags for each post. For example, if you are posting about a novel you wrote, you might want the following tags: #Fiction, #MurderMystery, #Theme, #PlotDiagram
