Reflection on WOOP Goal 2: Healthy Relationships

Outcome: The best result from achieving my wish would be myself being able to calmly explain the reason why I am disappointed or mad, and sincerely ask if they could change their action.

Introduction

In my journey towards personal growth, I have set a WOOP goal focusing on the Wellness Compass dimension of Healthy Relationships. My specific statement is: “I am able to resolve conflict in a productive way with family and friends. We are able to talk through conflict so that it does not continue.” This goal emphasizes the importance of communication and conflict resolution in maintaining healthy relationships.

Examples and Evidence

I chose this goal because I recognized that my weakness in relationships were resolving conflict. My desired outcome is to approach conflicts with resilience, creating an environment where communication comes first rather than blaming each other. For instance, during a recent argument with a family member, I consciously tried to implement my WOOP strategy. Instead of getting mad on things that we did wrong and weighing who did more wrong, I tried to identify the problem and tried to negotiate with the other in a peaceful way. This approach helped us reach understanding.

However, I also faced challenges. One major obstacle is my tendency to let emotions take over during conflicts. In the heat of the moment, I often act impulsively, which can escalate tensions instead of resolving them. Recognizing this pattern is crucial in my journey. I am learning to pause, breathe, and refocus on the issues at hand rather than getting caught up in feelings of anger or frustration.

Conclusion

To achieve my goal, I have made a plan that emphasizes collaborative problem solving. Instead of questioning who is right or wrong, I aim to shift the focus towards what we can change together. This strategy not only helps in resolving conflicts but also strengthens my relationships by fostering a sense of teamwork and understanding.

In reflection, my WOOP goal has encouraged me to be more mindful and intentional in my interactions and arguments. By prioritizing communication, I am gradually transforming my approach to conflicts.

Unit 2: Tech, Media, and Mental Health

Understanding Anxiety

I used to think that anxiety was simply an emotion that one feels when being in a stressful situation. I thought that it was emotion that one only experience in a short term. But now I know that it is a complex mental health condition that affects millions of individuals worldwide, involving biological, psychological, and social factors. The research that me and my group members did allowed me to notice how serious anxiety could be, and how severely it could impact one’s daily lives.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Anxiety

I used to think that diagnosing anxiety could simply self done, since I haven’t learned yet that it is a sort of a “non curable” disorder. I thought when people were feeling anxious, it was that they were also having a anxiety disorder. But now I think that professional evaluation should be done to be diagnosed with anxiety, as there are many types of anxiety disorder that need different treatments such as psychotherapy or medication treatments, along with noticing that people going around saying that they have anxiety disorder can cause misunderstandings and stereotypes.

Mythes and misunderstandings

I used to think that anxiety was just about feeling nervous or worried, like sadness. But like how “sadness” is different from a “depression,” I feel like more people should be aware of how mental health should not be taken lightly like an emotion. Anxiety is not just a state of emotion that one feels, but is a medical condition that has a large range of symptoms including physical ones also like increased heart rate, sweating, insomnia, and gastrointestinal issues, etc. Furthermore, I learned that there are many myths surrounding anxiety, such as the idea that it is not a “real” illness. It was surprising to say the least when I learned that 56% of people don’t even believe that anxiety is a real medical condition. 58.9% think that people with anxiety disorders are unstable, and 41.6% think that people with anxiety disorders are to blame. These misconception can lead to stigma and prevent individuals from seeking help.

Media Portrayal of Anxiety Disorders and Stigmas

I used to think that media representations of anxiety were too severe, or too stereotypical even before learning about them. It represented people with anxiety disorders as if they were unstable, weak, and crazy. I think that many portrayals of anxiety in media can be misleading, often exaggerating the experience and stereotyping. This misrepresentation can contribute to societal stigma and misunderstanding about what living with anxiety truly involves.

I also used to think that stigma surrounding mental health was fading in modern society, as they were commonly introduced in social media and on movies, dramas, television, etc. Something that now I realize is that though these portrayals could have raised interest towards mental health and illness, it did not particularly increase awareness, and even more stereotyped and mislead people.

Importance of Mental Health

As much as I was surprised by people that thought anxiety disorders and metal health issues were all fake, made up in one’s head, fault of people who have them, this also made me think that people are not taking mental health seriously as they should be. People need to be aware that mental disorders are an actual health issue, and that these could lead to severe physical symptoms and could be painful. Brain is also a part of our body, it doesn’t mean that mental health is fake if the symptoms do not appear to others. According to National Health Institutions, “8 million deaths are linked to mental disorders annually.” This doesn’t mean that people with mental disorders are weak, like we do not call people with other health issues such as cancer or even flue weak. It is an disorder that anyone can experience in any time of their life, and if not having the knowledge or a supportive community, it has a greater chance of not getting a proper treatment.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this unit has changed and shifted my perspective on anxiety and mental health. It has reinforced the importance of empathy, understanding, and accurate representation in media.

My Student Led Conference 2024

Artifact 1 – The Before and After

Evidence organization:

I think I am pretty good at organizing in my notebook. I have improved along the way and got better at remembering to add to the table of contents.

I think my notebook became more useful as a learning tool as the year went by, as I keep my notes that have helped me very much along the way to studying and have all my learning progress, from CERs to models that I have created.

Evidence of active learner habits:

Though I didn’t have much late assignments in the first semester, I got better at submitting my work on time in the second semester.

Evidence of Understanding of Key Concepts

The 3 for 3 are mostly great except for few that were in the unit that was challenging for me.

Thank you for listening to my progress towards my goals over the last year. Do you have any questions?

“One Sec” Wellness App Review (WOOP Goal)

Functions:

This app “one sec” is an app that allows one to block out certain types (Entertainment, educational, social media etc.) or chosen apps for few hours. This can allow one to become more focused, and stop the temptation that one might have to check their phone or play games in the middle of doing something productive. There are also features such as schedule interventions that block apps on specific times of the day, morning countdown that blocks the phone usage in the morning, and focus filter that block any notifications or popups coming up during chosen hours.

Usefulness

My WOOP goal stop procrastinating and avoiding stressful things and rather deal with it by tackling it first so I don’t have to worry about it. Using “one sec” to block out apps that I know I will get tempted, stopped me from wasting time scrolling through my phone, which did lead me to do work or read books due to the boredom, which is a success on my goal. Also, aside from my WOOP goal, I got better sleep since I didn’t sleep late watching my phone after setting screen time limit. This lead to being less tired in the morning, and I started waking up even before and without the alarm. I got enough time in the morning to eat breakfast, unlike before when I didn’t have time to eat. Better sleep and eating breakfast lead to a much positive morning, due to no rush and not being hungry. This also lead to myself being able to be more focused when working on tasks and more productive.

Using “one sec” also let me make healthy coping mechanisms. Before, I used to avoid stress by scrolling on internet. This did not work so well, since it was just a distraction, and not a solution for stress. This was time wasting which lead to bigger stress from the procrastinated assignments. Now, without the phone, I try to get more physical and take a walk or run. Some might think, ‘isn’t this also just a distraction from the stress?’ Yes, but the satisfaction that I chose to do something that is beneficial to me tend to improve my mood and make myself have a much positive perspective which sometimes help solve or cope with the stress. This app allows users to feel value of their time and themselves by stopping the users from wasting their time on-line involuntarily and allowing them to do things they are supposed to which prevents future stress and provides satisfaction.

Design

“One sec” uses a human design instead of a addictive design. Human designs are designs that lead to improve of people’s life quality, while addictive design is trying to make the users spend more time, arguably decreasing one’s life quality. Because “one sec” does not try to keep the users from being in the app and increase the time they spend on their phone, and rather even block itself when using the block app feature to stop the temptation of wanting to stop the blockage. The way this functions really help users stop wasting their time and do productive work, which not only gives more time to use on oneself, but also makes one be able to like themselves instead of hating themselves for procrastinating which really increases the value of one’s life.

A long term impact of using “one sec” can be that you will get used to the habit of not getting distracted by the phone. This can lead to being able to not get distracted even without the help of ‘one sec.’ Long term usage can also lead to higher focus rates along with not getting fooled by the ‘prize’ we could get from scrolling through social media or playing a game and find real dopamine and satisfaction in the real world from things that are beneficial.

Record of Using “One Sec”-

Rating- ⭐︎⭐︎⭐︎⭐︎⭐︎⭐︎⭐︎⭐︎/10

8 out of 10. Would use it again, but it is a bit inconvenient because the block cannot be disabled once set, even in emergencies.

Psychology of stress- Reflection

Key lessons learned:

-Brain function

  • Amygdala and hippocampus, plays a central role in the stress response.
  • The pre-frontal cortex is in charge of emotions and stress, and fully develops near 23 years old.
  • Chronic stress can have negative impacts on brain development, especially in the early years.

-Stress and Emotion

  • Stress can cause and be caused due to a “negativity bias”, leading to unhelpful thinking patterns
  • Not all stress are bad. For example, eustress is the kind of stress that motivates people, unlike distress that is negative

– Responding to stress

  • There are FFF response that people go through because of amygdala sensing danger
  • Hormones like cortisol can be released when responding to stress, which can have both positive and negative effects

Building resilience for stress:

  • Knowing and understanding how the brain works and functions with stress can help better recognize and manage stress
  • Practicing to be mindful nd calm daily can help to stay mindful during stressful situations
  • Understanding how the brain reacts to stress, practices can be done to avoid false FFF

SAS astronomy modeling project

I can develop a model of the Earth, Sun, Moon system to describe seasons, moon phases, and eclipses.

Guiding question: Why is it colder in winter than in summer?

Answer: Because in winter, we get indirect sunlight, and in summer, we get direct sunlight.

Ice cream with salt

We were making an ice cream in science class, and we used milk, sugar, ice, and salt to make ice cream. Milk was one of the ingredients in the ice cream, and it went from liquid to solid. We removed thermal energy from the milk to make the milk freeze. Kinetic energy decreased, the motion of particles slowed down, and the spacing also decreased, as the temperature of the milk decreased.

Car Race Reflextion

For this project, we had to use ratios to make a prediction of the time it would take for all 4 teammates to run the tracks that the teachers had prepared. If I could re do this project, one thing I would do is to walk a bit slowly, and count while walking. The first teammate that went out went too fast, and the second one went too slow trying to catch up, so it became a mess. This is because everyone didn’t actually remember well how they walked when we where getting the ratios. If we walked slowly at the same pace for all the partners, it would have been better. If we had counted, i don’t think that there would have been a very big difference between our prediction and the actual rate. We used the unit meter per seconds during our time travel. During these trials, units are very important since wrong units can lead to way different results, and this could be a huge problem. If we didn’t include the units on the paper, we would have gotten messed up with the datas that we collected, and the results would have been a mess and a chaos.

African penguins

Why are African Penguins endangered? African Penguins are endangered because of guano, also known as their poop. Penguins used to use this guano to make a nest so they could protect the egg from the heat and the predators that are hunting for the eggs. But since guano was a great material for farming, people took all the guano from the penguins to earn money. Penguins that couldn’t survive in the heat without guano nests, started to die because of heat, or abandon the eggs.

What can we do to save them? We know that the penguins are suffering in the heat because they don’t have a good enough nest. Then, what if we make a nest for them? Our group made a nest out of the best insulators to save the African penguins. We used wood, foam sheet, and cotton which were the top 3 best insulators.

This is a picture of the penguin nest design.

Mc Donald Poster

-We were tasked to make a poster that would show that Mc Donalds offered a healthy option for the customers that are buying fast food.

-I decided which graphs to use by looking at the graph, and choosing the one that looks like Mc Donald has the lowest calories. I used the graphs that had information that has an advantage for the Mc Donald so more customers would come to eat.

-Some things I did well was choosing the graph and making the design. In my opinion, red was the best color to represent Mc Donald, and make someone look at the poster by having a bold color. Some things that I should improve on is descriptions.

-I don’t think I used enough math words to describe, and I think I had too less description. Next time if I have to do this again, I would like to add more text and math words when I am describing and explaining the graph.

-I used CARP in my design decisions. For the contrast, I used red to make it stand out and more attractive. It would make someone’s eyes naturally get attracted by it. I also used arrangement. I had 2 graphs that had parallel arrangement. I used repetition of the same color for the text, and used yellow.
