I do what i require but i always keep kindness and loyalty as a priority

My Student Led Conference 2025

Feburary, 2025 / Boontanig

Introduction

The purpose of my conference is to explain what I’ve been doing in school all this time.

I’d like to share:

  • What I’ve done and what I still want to achieve
  • Some areas of growth, struggles, and some of my work
  • My goals and how I plan to achieve them

My Vision Board

Some of the things included on my vision board are:

  • Golf – My favorite sport that I’m training
  • Snowboarding – My favourite recreational sport after Golf
  • Math/Science – I like these subjects.

These are important because:

My Goals Are:

1.Improve at my favourite sports.

2.Improve my gradebook

3.Improve my golf score at least 2 strokes from my average.

Transdisciplinary Transfer Goal (TTG)

The TTG I chose to reflect upon throughout the year is…

Creative learner

I think I’ve been a creative learner since I was able to learn a lot of knowledge in a creative way. Like in my passion project, I learned a lot just by doing it.

And in all of the core classes, we had very creative projects as well.

Core Subject: Math 🧮

I will now share my progress in Math…

I have improved a lot in writing logical reasoning for my answers to any question, and I got a lot more organized. This can prove what I show as my strength below.

This is a sticker project I worked on, where I have to use my knowledge of geometry and shape transformation to design a sticker. This can prove what I show as my strengths below.

Strengths

  • Geometry
  • Reasoning
  • Linear functions

Areas of Growth

  • Algebra
  • Faster calculation speed
  • Number theory

Core Subject: Science 🧪

I will now share my progress in Science…

These artifacts can prove my growth in scientific CER writing. As you can see, during the middle of the year, I have been able to write good CER’s when at the beginning of the year, I wasn’t as good and often made mistakes such as including pronouns like “I” in the text. Now, I am not only able to avoid those mistakes, but I can also explain in detail using evidence why my claim is true.

These pictures show my improvement in organization of my materials. I am able to keep track of what is in my book because of my table of contents, and I’m also able to organize my notes better than before as you can see in the image above.

These artifacts show how I organize my digital materials.

Extra 😀

Strengths

  • Organizing/Taking notes
  • Interpreting evidence an connecting them to a claim using evidence.
  • Making Hypothesis

Areas of Growth

Artifact 1 – The Before and AfterMy Goals for Student Led Conferences

Core Subject: Language Arts 📖

This is our academic writing unit, we learned how to write academically, and sound more professional rather than little kids.

This is our story writing unit, in this unit I learned how to write a story board and turn it into a story with some help from AI. We did it in a group of 4 and the artifact is my part of the story. Yeah don’t ask what this is about… (Why did I add this…)

Core Subject: Social Studies 🌏

Unit 3 WWI
During unit 3, we started a simulation of WWI and we were assigned countries to represent in groups of three. I was given the role of Germany. By learning what happened in real history, we avoided previous weak points and mistakes made by real Germany and were able to capture Russia, unlike real life. As you can see in the picture, we were able to take control over Serbia, Romania, and Russia, who were previously fighting against us.

This is my inquiry poster, and it talks about my inquiry question, which was: “How has advancement in technology advanced our understanding of the universes origins?” This artifact shows my research I did about this question during unit 1. It helped me grow at my writing skills. I was able to find credible sources, use them by making sense of what they say about my topic, separate the information and organize them into a poster.

In my recent unit of health, I learned about social media’s impact on mental health

I used to think that although social media does have negative sides, the benefits outweigh the negatives. But after this unit, I learned the real amount of trouble social media can cause in a human. Firstly Social media can influence teens to do things they shouldn’t do or have them stuck watching videos all day. This doesn’t only apply to teens. Adults have an even stronger hook on this doomscrolling.

I also learned that social media can cause unwanted stigma on people with mental health diseases. First stigma is the stereotype that people give to a group with a disease. This is severe with people with mental health illnesses since mental health diseases are actually prevalent and people commonly stereotype them as crazy maniacs or murderers in movies. Social media makes this worse since it spreads the idea well and makes people with mental health diseases seem bad even though we are just as likely to get these diseases. For example, I did research on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and people with PTSD almost always develop this mental health disorder due to past trauma experiences. This coming back to stigma in social media, means these people get visualized in a bad way even though they are just as respectable as physically disabled/ injured people.

Health Project about cell phone policies

Cell phones are something you can use. But you need to control it, not get controlled by the cellphone. In Highschools, cell phone usage is allowed and freely at that, but should it really be though? Well evidence from experts suggests there should be cell phone restrictions in highschools, or even bans.

First let’s talk about why cell phones are so addicting. According to ASAPScience, cell phones have apps in them that are games. These games give mental rewards to you do give small sparks of dopamine while you are playing. This makes you crave this activity you do on your phone when you’re not doing it. Creating a effect similar to one of drugs.

Cell phones Impact your emotional health, mental health, and physical health, and creates a huge distraction for education. This is why I think that Cell phone access should be restricted in classes or in school hours, or just completely banned. I believe this because it should make education in high school much more efficient and makes us way healthier. Like getting off a drug. I also think that teachers and parents would agree as well. If the teachers don’t really care, then the parents would probably nudge them to.

Although I have been talking about this and researching for quite a while, I also need to change things to apply it to my own life. Some solutions I have to reduce my time distracted on my cell phone on useless things include: Deleting or hiding away some distractions on my phone, or make it harder to access them, putting my phone away and not using them for long periods of time a day to make me familiar to not having my cell phone to provide me dopamine.

In conclusion, Cell phones are useful but also an addicting distraction, and we should have restrictions and bans to help us get back on track.

Science Ice cream

Today in science class we made our own ice creams using science. We used the ingredients milk, vanilla, sugar and salt. The ice cream at first was in it’s liquid state. Then we put the liquid into a bag into another bag with ice and salt. Next we shook the bag to ensure the milk touches the ice evenly. When we did all that, the ice absorbed the heat inside the particles of our ice cream and made the particles move slower and stick closer, freezing it into ice.

Car race activity

In this project I used Ratios and Rates to compare distance and time to calculate speed then estimated my time to be as precise as possible on the race day. If i could redo this project, I would make more specific benchmark numbers to make the estimation more accurate. We used “seconds” as our unit of measure during time trials and for count. Units of measure were a key thing to include when measuring time. Groups that didn’t use unit’s of measure got confused and could not give a precise estimation.

Penguin Nest project

In this project, we had to create the best nest possible for the African Penguin.

First, we had to learn why the African Penguin is endangered. It is endangered because people are taking away the Guano, which is their poop. They use it to cool down their eggs but mow their eggs are left in the boiling sun. Heat travels from hot to cold, so we will have to find a way to use materials to block the heat transfer.

For the second part of the project we chose to use wooden sticks, cotton, aluminum foil and tissue paper in our project. Even though that cost us all our money, we still put it to good effect as they were good insulators and they block out the heat.

The last part of the project is to create a commercial advertising our penguin nest and trying to convince the WWF to invest in our penguin nest. We are currently in the process of creating the script for the commercial.

That is our penguin nest project.

My science project all done!

I researched the hawksbill turtle for my endangered species project and created a website about it. Check it out!

https://savedahbt.weebly.com

I learned that hawksbill turtles have been poached for their shells because of their beautiful overlapping pattern and sold in markets. I learn that they are critically endangered and another reason they die is because they eat the trash we throw into the sea. I also learned how to interpret graphs by using sentence starters like, This graph shows,  I see, This means, This is because.

Welcome to Your New Portfolio!

Why have a digital portfolio at SAS?

Creating a portfolio, or blog is a great way to collect all the work you’ve done throughout your academic career. You can include academic, athletic, and personal artifacts or experiences that you want to share with a wider audience. This is a great way to organize all your learning in one place and you can take it with you when you leave SAS.  When you make your portfolio, you create posts that are categorized according to your subject. Some categories have already been set up for you, but if you need more categories you can add them as needed. It’s important that your posts have the following:

  • An engaging title – this should not include the name of the subject since this is referenced in the category. Think of this as the first opportunity to engage and hook your reader!
  • Body – this is where you share your learning. This should include a combination of text and media in the form of images, graphics, and embedded videos. You should always consider how your post looks to your audience. Is it engaging and organized? Do they want to keep reading?
  • Category – select one that has been set for you or add a new category. Posts can have more than one category e.g. Humanities and Myself as a Learner
  • Tags – create tags that can be used as keywords to describe your post. Tags help organize your post a little more! Aim to have 3-5 tags for each post. For example, if you are posting about a novel you wrote, you might want the following tags: #Fiction, #MurderMystery, #Theme, #PlotDiagram
