When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!

My Student Led Conference 2024

March, 2025/ Caroline Gu

Introduction

The purpose of my conference is to

I’d like to share:

  • What I’ve done and what I still want to achieve
  • Some areas of growth, struggles, and some of my work
  • My goals and how I plan to achieve them

My Vision Board

Some of the things included on my vision board are:

  • My dream university
  • photo experiences of my own that I enjoyed
  • Quotes
  • My MBTI personality

These are important because: these things I put in describe who I am and what I want to do.

My Goals Are:

  1. To read 10 more books annually compared to before and to the year before this year.
  2. Expand my vocal range even more.

Here is evidence of how I was able to start to make progress towards my goals.

Transdisciplinary Transfer Goal (TTG)

The TTG I chose to reflect upon throughout the year is…

Critical Thinkers – I know that I am a critical thinker because I consider multiple approaches and perspectives to evaluate decisions.

To achieve this goal, I will try to achieve this goal mostly in core classes where I am able to support arguments with evidence.

This is the “L4 – Natural Resources Product Project (Module 3, Optional Extension)” and this supports my journey in this goal because it shows me taking multiple approaches to support my claim to show Mediheal Tea Tree Toner pads are good for the environment.

Core Subject: Language Arts 📖

I will now share my progress in Language Arts…

The Writer’s Studio Talk show” is where our group of four had a discussion about a situation. We all gave our perspectives.

Core Subject: Social Studies 🌏

I will now share my progress in Social Studies…

This is my L4: Inquiry into Interest – Final Assessment:

I chose this artifact for Social Studies because this was one of my favorite projects this year and because I did very well on the project. I liked this project because we got to choose a topic that we were interested in to research about. I chose the topic of climate change and I decided to talk about the financial risks and opportunities for businesses with the result of climate change regulations. I feel that my final result was a very good poster and I received a 14/15 on this project. One thing I think I should’ve done was to try the L4 option. I felt that I didn’t have enough time to create a whole presentation so I didn’t attempt it. But, I feel like if I attempted it, I would’ve known about my topic even more.

Core Subject: Math 🧮

I will now share my progress in Math…

The math class I take is IM8.

This is the Geometry celebration of learning. I chose this artifact because it demonstrated my exceeding progress in Geometry.

In typical occasions, I usually receive meetings in my math class.

Core Subject: Science 🧪

Evidence of Organization

Above: My organized Table or Contents. It helps me organize my work so I know what page is where.

Above: Comparison of two organized pages in my notebook. As the science lessons get harder, I

My science notebook is a well-organized, carefully created artifact of my learning in science class this school year.

Evidence of Active Learner Habits

I am a consistent active learner. I have only turned an assignment late in once.

Evidence of Understanding of Key Concepts

I could improve my understanding of key concepts. I plan to review concepts at home the day before science class.

Evidence of Growth in Science Skills

  • Standard 1: Developing and Using Models
  • Standard 2: Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions
  • Standard 3: Engaging in Argument from Evidence
  • Standard 4: Asking Questions and Defining Problems
  • Standard 5: Using Mathematics and Computational Thinking
  • Standard 6: Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information

EnCore: Spanish🇪🇸

This was a poster that we made about healthy habits. We used commands to talk about healthy habits.

This was a dialogue written by Alexandra and I. We were assigned a picture and had to talk about how someone got injured.

EnCore: Orchestra🎻

I will now share my progress in Orchestra.

The first artifact I have is the first reflection from the chamber music. I chose this artifact because I think I reflected our rehearsal very well while answering all of the question. I received a 4/4 for this assignment.

EnCore: Physical Education

I will now share my progress in Physical Education.

In the swimming unit, my grades for the skills were all 4s.

EnCore: Health

L4: There’s an App for That!

I received a 4 on this project. We were asked to review an app.

Here were the expectations to receive a 4:It is clear you spent 7 days using and getting to know the app and you are familiar with the features. All components of the review are completed thoroughly. Includes clear screen shots showing important features and design. The 3 parts of the review are clearly written and show a strong understanding of the app and its audience. Class notes/ ideas are referenced in the review. Revision and editing is evident.

Strengths and Areas of Growth

Some of the skills I am good at is organizing. Like my SLC page, my work is also very neat. The best artifact to show my organization is my science notebook.

Some things I want to improve on is not being late to school and instead being on time. I often have to run through the halls to get to advisory on time.

Passion Project 4.0:

Emily and I are challenging ourselves as a risk taker in this project. Emily is playing a new instrument (the drums) and I am stretching my vocals while playing some guitar . Our final project will be a live performance on PP day.

Closing

Thank you for listening to my progress towards my goals over the last year. Do you have any questions?

Media and Mental Health Unit

In this unit, we learned about how social media could affect one’s mental health. We talked about mental health conditions and made presentations on them. Our group’s topic was Anxiety. We worked hard to present this condition without any images that included stigma about this condition.

Media could influence teen and mental healthy because of the harmful posts online. This could include unrealistic facial features and body weight, unhealthy lifestyles, etc. This is bad because these posts pressure people to be like the people in the posts. When people are pressured, they feel insecure because they don’t “fit in”. When this happens, they might develop a mental health condition. Social media could also harm how a person handles these condition because stigma of these conditions is always “bad” and “unacceptable”. People then may not be willing to reach out which causes their mental condition to be worse.

Stigma

I think that mental health stigma exists because mental health conditions are often visualized as crazy and unacceptable when it’s not. Movie/TV show makers are making people feel that these conditions show that a person is crazy and cannot normally function in life. For example, in a lot of movies, a person that has anxiety is portrayed as crazy and is always alone. This isn’t true. People should stop portraying these conditions in the wrong way and should do their research before putting images or videos online that include mental health conditions that are unrealistic.

Another example is also this image above. People feel that mental health conditions don’t even exist. They do and they’re often just as harmful as physical illnesses. People with these conditions can’t just control them and “stop thinking negatively”. They also need support just like any other health condition.

Summary

All in all, it is important for teens to understand mental health conditions because teens need to be aware of what they might be going through and they need to know that it’s okay.

Impact of Technology Presentation; Health Research Project

My evidence revealed that unrestricted cell phone use will negatively impact a teen’s social-emotional health. The evidence showed that social media already has a negative impact to a student’s self esteem and has data that there is a significant behavior change for teens since the 1970s. Students started to not socialize and feel lonely.

My opinion is that if we have cell phones during school hours but not during classes it will be fine. I think this because most students in high school still participate in class and extracurriculars fully and still socializes with friends. I think that parents and teacher might also agree with this because they also see that students do participate in sports.

I will make sure that I finish all of my work before I use my phone for un-educational purposes. I will also make sure that I hang out with my friends offline and still participate in my sports.

Ice Cream Experiment

We made ice cream in school! In this unit we are learning about the change of matter and we turned milk into ice cream without using a fridge.  We first put milk into a small plastic bag and added flavor and sugar in it. Then we put salt and ice into a larger bag for the ice cream to turn into ice cream. Next, we put the small bag into the large ice bag and shook it for 8 minutes. And then it was ice cream. Our ice cream was very alike store-bought ice cream because we shook it very hard.

Car Race Reflection Post.

In this unit, we learned about ratios and rates and we had a project where we build a cardboard race car and try to get the closest ratio to 1:1. We predicted our time by doing time trials and adding our rates together. Our team was 19 seconds off from our predicted time. If we could do this again I think we should have walked slower during the time trial because it would allows us to take our time and walk and not be 19. seconds slower. In the timed trials, we used 30cm per second and they were important because they could help us add up the total ad predict the ratio. For the groups that didn’t include the units, they got confused with the numbers and they didn’t know which one was the rate.

Penguin Nest Challenge

My partner and I, Michelle made a penguin nest in science to save the African penguin. African penguins suffer because people took their Guano which is their poop they use to make nests. Because of that, the Penguins have to choose whether to leave their chicks or overheat and die. Therefore, we made a nest called Snowy Corner. Our nest had a change in mass of 4g. Our nest was in the middle of other’s change in mass. It wasn’t too bad but it wasn’t the best either. We found out the change of mass by doing and experiment and putting the penguin nest under the heat lamp for 30 min. I think our nest wasn’t too bad because we still blocked the heat and it wasn’t that bad.

Save the African Penguins!

In this unit, we have been trying to solve the problem of the African Penguins being endangered. Some things to help protect them and increase their population was to build their habitats with good insulators to allow them to not die from the heat. Some scientific concepts that we had to understand was that heat moves from hot to cold. Figuring out the best insulators was also something we had to do. We did that by putting ice cubes into each cup wrapped with the material in the outside later. We put it under a heat lamp and the best insulator was wooden sticks. We were now building habitats for the penguins. In our penguin nest, we used cotton, wooden sticks, a foam sheet, felt fabric which were all the best insulators. We created it in a way where there would be no way for hot air to get into cold air. We named our penguin house Snowy Corner when we designed the display page.

Statistics: Unit Assessment | Defending the Clown

This was an end of unit assessment to determine if you can analyze and interpret graphs. In the process, I noticed that some of the graphs our teacher, Joshua produced are purposely inaccurate so I decided to make my own graphs. I did well on creating graphs and providing a clear claim. I think I could improve on having reasoning and evidence. I could have provided reasoning for the Highest Calorie Sandwich and explain clearer on the other reasonings and back it up with evidence coming from the graph.

All about Me

I chose this design because it had an repeat of what I mainly do and tells my talents.

Endangered Species project

I learned how to analyze graphs because we had to include a graph into our design. I made two Canvas because I wanted exceeding for the format part. I learned about Polar Bears and Koalas. I liked them both equally because they are both very cute. I chose them because one of the causes of decline for polar bears were climate change and koalas because they are cute.

Photo attached is my Koala one.
