Unit 2: Tech, Media, and Mental Health Reflection

In unit 2, I learned about tech and media by doing an project on a wellness app portfolio post on my woop goal. I use to think that tech and media would only make my emotions influenced in a bad way, but now I think app can benefit me on handling my emotions as an effective tool to use on daily bases if needed. Exploring apps that are related to mental health and improving those goals shows my understanding of awareness of various app functionalities, such as mood tracking.

Additionally, the small discussion board post shown below shows the ideas on how social media hack our brains. we discussed on an article on how social media gets us easily distracted. Due to many factors like notifications or just simple messages popping out shows feelings of desire to check the message. Ending up getting distracted from what we are already doing.

Moreover, this assignment we did on tech and values helps myself personally to reflect on the values and the association of tech. My use of technology aligns with my values on spirituality, emotional health, and kindness/respect. In this task I learned who myself truly is where I didn’t have time alone to think about life . This process emphasizes the importance of the influence of technology that affected my perspectives.

Another project is mainly surrounded by mental health, the mental health research presentation on a various of disorders. My group worked on PTSD while other groups worked on disorders like OCD, bipolar, anxiety and more. I used to think that mental health issues were rare and that seeking help indicated weakness and personal failure, but now I understand that mental health is a complex and universal concern affecting many individuals, regardless of their backgrounds. I learned that the stigma surrounding mental health can prevent people from seeking necessary support, and addressing the right information and knowing truly that you do experience this disorder is essential. I noticed most or even all of the disorders has something related to psychological, self-care, or medical treatments. This overall has transformed my perspective, having to show great empathy and foster a supportive environment for mental health awareness.

Here are some slides from our presentation mainly covering the key facts, impact, media and mental health, and treatment of PTSD.

Wellness App Review: Emotional Management – Super Better

Functionality:

SuperBetter is a mental health app designed to enhance resilience through game like completing missions. After you down the app you will need to create an account and you will needs to insert your own goal, here you can use your whoop goal. You can also set complete quests, and earn power-ups that contribute to the mood and mental health. Gaining points on topics can help with your emotions, while it’s also good to take quizzes once a while to know and reflect about yourself.

In addition to its basic features, the app offers advanced options such as customizable quests tailored to individual needs and a resource library with articles and tips on mental health. However, some users may find it challenging to maintain engagement over time or may experience technical issues. Moreover, the app may not cover every mental health topic in-depth or targeted to one specifically, but overall, it provides an engaging way to support individuals on their mental health needs.

Design:

The design of SuperBetter combines fun, colorful graphics with an easy-to-use interface to help improve their mental health. It features a dashboard that shows quests, power-ups, and progress, making it motivating and engaging. You can create customizable avatars and break down big goals into smaller tasks. The app also allows users to invite friends for support, adding a social interaction. Overall, the design focuses on making the experience interactive and encouraging.

The page looks like this below:

Whoop Goal:

(Sorry the videos are very blurry because it exceeds the maximum uploading file for this site)

SuperBetter can support my personal wellness goals using the WOOP framework (Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan) by helping me set and achieve specific mental health goals. For example, my goal is to handle emotions better in a positive way, I can set quests that focus on communication and techniques that help me calm down. From that, I can learn that technique and use it in the future when I need it.

The app promotes healthy habits that improve emotional health and stress resilience by gamifying the process of self-care. By completing quests and earning rewards, this can develop easy routines for me to form a healthy habit. Additionally, SuperBetter’s focus on social support allows users to build connections, which can further enhance emotional resilience. This app encourages physical activities and mindfulness practices that benefit overall well-being, improving the overall obstacle for me to achieve my goal.

Health Psychology of Stress

In this health unit, we explored the development of the human brain and compared the teen’s and adult’s brain at different ages. The amygdala is the brain region involved in the fight, flight, or freeze response. False FFF makes you not scared physically but helps you protects you from a certain threat that affects your mind. When this part is activated, it can lead to these instinctual reactions. Where  your behaviors already know what to do for the first time. Teenagers have a somewhat less developed prefrontal cortex compared to adults, which often results in more impulsive behavior, particularly when the amygdala is triggered. Additionally, strategies such as exercising, music, nature and more can help us reduce stress. Stress affects ones mental and physical health overall.

Recycled Board Game

We like playing Monoply, so I am making a board game that is similar to Monoply. But also very different because it is a not a endless game. It can be or not. The penguins (characters) will collect plastic bottles, etc. We are collecting them because we are trying to make the environment better by becoming a global citizenship. I am making the board game using recycled materials.

Welcome to Your New Portfolio!

Why have a digital portfolio at SAS?

Creating a portfolio, or blog is a great way to collect all the work you’ve done throughout your academic career. You can include academic, athletic, and personal artifacts or experiences that you want to share with a wider audience. This is a great way to organize all your learning in one place and you can take it with you when you leave SAS.  When you make your portfolio, you create posts that are categorized according to your subject. Some categories have already been set up for you, but if you need more categories you can add them as needed. It’s important that your posts have the following:

  • An engaging title – this should not include the name of the subject since this is referenced in the category. Think of this as the first opportunity to engage and hook your reader!
  • Body – this is where you share your learning. This should include a combination of text and media in the form of images, graphics, and embedded videos. You should always consider how your post looks to your audience. Is it engaging and organized? Do they want to keep reading?
  • Category – select one that has been set for you or add a new category. Posts can have more than one category e.g. Humanities and Myself as a Learner
  • Tags – create tags that can be used as keywords to describe your post. Tags help organize your post a little more! Aim to have 3-5 tags for each post. For example, if you are posting about a novel you wrote, you might want the following tags: #Fiction, #MurderMystery, #Theme, #PlotDiagram
