My Student Led Conference 2024

December 2, 2024 / Daisy Xu

Introduction

The purpose of my conference is to share my progress

I’d like to share:

  • What I’ve done and what I still want to achieve
  • Some areas of growth, struggles, and some of my work
  • My goals and how I plan to achieve them

My Vision Board

Some of the things included on my vision board are:

  • Volleyball, because it is my passion, one of my favorite things to do.
  • Friends, their very important to me, some of the things I try is inspired by them.
  • Good Memories
  • Study

These are important because:

My Goals Are:

1. Too ask more questions in class

2. Participate in class discussions more

3. No day dreaming

Here is evidence of how I was able to start to make progress towards my goals.
My artifact is my active learner grade. My active learner grade would be able to show how I’m participating in class and not daydreaming, how I am actually focusing in class.

Transdisciplinary Transfer Goal (TTG)

The TTG I chose to reflect upon throughout the year is critical thinker.

Artifact 1 is my science graphic organizer. I picked this because recently we’re thinking of projects to do for shark tank. And the ideas we come up with involves critical thinking.

#Artifact 1

  • Prepare for tests better
  • the artifact I chose for math are my notebook and my functions CoL. I chose these artifacts because my CoL shows my improvement in math for functions and my notebook shows that

Artifact 1 – The Before and AfterMy Goals for Student Led Conferences

Core Subject: Science 🧪

I will now share my progress in Science…

Strengths

  • My note-book is well organized
  • The models I drew were all very clear

Areas of Growth

  • Need to remember to do my table of contents
  • Need to get better at writing claims
  • Need to get better at writing reasonings

Evidence for Active Learner Habits

This is my self grading system in science where I grade myself based on the rubric and see what grade I think I deserve. At the bottom of the page also mentions my goals for the semester is. For example this semester my goal is that I hope that I will be able to understand the things we are learning more clearly.

Evidence of Understanding Key Concepts

My 3 for 3s show my understanding of the topics we’re currently learning.

Artifact 1 – The Before and AfterMy Goals for Student Led Conferences

Core Subject: Social Studies 🌏

Artifact 1

Artifact 2

These are my two artifacts. The first ones my analysis essay on art during ww1. The second one was a poster about how Leonardo Da Vinci’s artistic legacy continues to influence contemporary interpretations of renaissance art. These two artifacts can show improvement because artifact one was a more recent piece of writing that we did in class and artifact two was more in the beginning oh the year. It shows improvement in my writing, we can see this from one the grade I got for each of them. Artifact 1 got exceeding for the analysis essay and I got a meeting for my poster writing. My writing is now more clear when explaining things and I think my use of commas and periods are getting better and I’m using them in the right places more. I also now know how to organize my essays instead of answer the guiding questions. Artifact 1 shows my understanding of world war 1’s connection between art and artifact two shows my understanding of renaissance art and its connection with da Vinci.

Language Arts

The Artifact I chose was my reading and writing passports. Ready and writing passports are things that we do twice a semester. Where we get a checklist of items we need to get done. In the artifact I need at least 6-8 reading journals to get a meeting. Reading and writing passports basically counts as your active learner grade. I chose this artifact because it shows my active learner during language arts class.

P.E

Some challenges I faced during P.E was trying sports that I did not do. Other than volleyball all the other units for P.E made me really struggle. Because as everybody knows I don’t play every single sport. I’m bad at soccer, basketball, floor hockey, and many more. but just because I was bad at them didn’t give me the excus eto not do anything nor stop trying. My active learning grade for most units are meeting. But because of the effort I put in in some units I get exceeding for excelling the skill.

Chinese

These are my two artifacts for Chinese, the first artifact shows one of my strengths, writing. I chose writing as my strength because every essay we have written I have gotten 4s or very few 3.5s. It shows that I understand the specific words and phrases and how to use them in my essay. My second artifact shows one of my weaknesses. 词语填空 is very hard for me as sometimes I don’t even understand what the sentences are even saying.

Strengths

  • I’m funny
  • I have aura
  • Im a great person (trust)
  • I’m good at photography
(This was all asked by people)

Areas of Growth

  • Be nicer
  • Focus more on important subjects
  • Stay on track

Passion Project

My Passion Project is a volleyball tournament because of my passion for volleyball. We’ve (Annabella, Fiona, and I) invited many other international school teams to come play against each other. Recently, we finished arranging teams and we went to costco to buy food for the competitors.

Highlights of the year:

My favourite season of this year was of course the volleyball C1 CISSA season. Won all but 1 in CRE with my amazing team.

Closing

Thank you for listening to my progress towards my goals over the last year. Do you have any questions?

Technology’s Influence on Teens

I used to think that technology doesn’t influence teens that much because everyone has things they have to do, so I used to think when they don’t have anything to do thats the only time they would really use their technology, but now I think technology sometimes do influence teens because teens tend to procrastinate a lot, and the technology might distract them from getting work done, leading them to stay up really late and not get enough sleep which can lead to stress and sleep deprive and other mental illnesses.

It can also cause health stigma. Stigma occurs when a group of people have negative thoughts or beliefs about something. We can all help reduce stigma by providing help for those in need of it.

mental illness also might lead to health conditions, it is important to know each condition so we can see the effects and the symptoms of them to prevent them from happening quicker.

How Technology Impacts a Student

  1. evidence on impact of phones on teen social emotional health

according to sciencedirect.com adolescents who exhibited excessive screen-time activities reported teens not getting enough sleep. Sleep studies suggest that what is keeping teens up at night is a combination of biological factors and modifiable lifestyle factors, including technology habits.

2. opinions on the effect it will have on you next year

It might affect my concentration from doing homework during the free blocks we get during school and the notification might prevent me from doing it even more at home. And because of not completing homework it might affect my sleep and it might give me more stress.

    3. strategies you will use to limit distractions

I will turn off notifications and exit out all social medias when I do homework, I will put my phone some where away from me, most likely far away so I will be too lazy to stand up and get it

      Recycled Board Game Box

This is the box I made with my partner. we made it for the recycled board game project. Firstly we trace out the template and cut it out. Then Fold it. And lastly glue it 😀

      Defending McDonalds!

This is my assessment on defending McDonalds/statistical questions. I think i did well on the design and the question. What I think I need to improve on is that my spelling, because I spelled healthy into health.

      Daisy’s ink-flake :)

Hewo! i made this ink-flake. snow flake made in Inkscape. (was yellow before and reminded me of something) I made it by myself, in school, and it makes me feel cold. I used shapes, and formed them together. And made them rotate to make a snowflake!

      Welcome to Your New Portfolio!

Why have a digital portfolio at SAS?

Creating a portfolio, or blog is a great way to collect all the work you’ve done throughout your academic career. You can include academic, athletic, and personal artifacts or experiences that you want to share with a wider audience. This is a great way to organize all your learning in one place and you can take it with you when you leave SAS.  When you make your portfolio, you create posts that are categorized according to your subject. Some categories have already been set up for you, but if you need more categories you can add them as needed. It’s important that your posts have the following:

      • An engaging title – this should not include the name of the subject since this is referenced in the category. Think of this as the first opportunity to engage and hook your reader!
      • Body – this is where you share your learning. This should include a combination of text and media in the form of images, graphics, and embedded videos. You should always consider how your post looks to your audience. Is it engaging and organized? Do they want to keep reading?
      • Category – select one that has been set for you or add a new category. Posts can have more than one category e.g. Humanities and Myself as a Learner
      • Tags – create tags that can be used as keywords to describe your post. Tags help organize your post a little more! Aim to have 3-5 tags for each post. For example, if you are posting about a novel you wrote, you might want the following tags: #Fiction, #MurderMystery, #Theme, #PlotDiagram
