Introduction

The purpose of my conference is to share my growth this year, as an 8th grade student. I will explain what did I improve on from last year and what has happened this learning journey.

I’d like to share:

  • What I’ve done and what I still want to achieve
  • Some areas of growth, struggles, and some of my work
  • My goals and how I plan to achieve them

My Vision Board

Some of the things included on my vision board are:

  • My grades; I hope to improve on my learning.
  • Reading; I want to read more books
  • Tennis; I will play more tennis
  • Sleep; I will get more sleep

EnCore: Health ❤️

Health has been a wonderful semester class this year. Let’s find out what happened in Health… Artifacts

EnCore: Band

I had an amazing time in Band this year. As explained in my band artifacts, I took part in many concerts earlier in the year. This really helped me improve in sight-reading and understanding the melody of the music.

My main strengths lie in my ability to:

  • Correctly identify the rhythm and notes in my music
  • Understand the techniques to correctly play my music (drumset)
  • Learn quickly

For example, I was able to create a piece of music from different melodies and rhythms learned in class. However, something I hope to do more is practice my instrument more, because I understand another concert is coming up and I am not ready yet. Another improvement I could make to my music skills is memorizing all the notes on the treble clef because every time I receive new music, I have to spend lots of time to identify the notes.

EnCore: Design Tech

I will now share my progress in Design Tech this year. Empathize 1 (Artifact 1)

In addition, I have been working hard to finish my tissue box in design technology this year. Here are the sample drawings I created: Ideate 1 (Artifact 2)

This semester in Design Technology, I have improved a lot in my inkscape abilities. This class is extremely technical, so I learned much more about the intricacies of 3D printing and laser-cutting this year.

My Strengths 💪🏻:

Some of my strengths are…

I am good at making good work plans for this class.

I value process. I will almost always understand and complete tasks as wanted by Mr. Hatt.

I value deadlines. I will almost certainly submit my projects on time.

Being able to keep multiple ideas in my head. This helps me brainstorm very well in class.

Areas of Growth:

I am not great at identifying what is a priority. I have to be careful especially about the artifact drawings. These took much longer than I expected and caused me to lose time overall.

I am not very efficient, I often lag behind and have to finish the process journal or inkscape work at home, when it is often expected to be finished in class.

EnCore: Español 🇪🇸

I will now share my progress in spanish class this year

Spanish class has been quite exciting this year. From learning about the environment to now cooking, I am happy for how things have turned out. This year, there were also a lot of reviewing of last year, which really helps with the amount of new vocab and conjugation we are learning.

Passion Project 4.0

This year in 8th Grade, I took part in the wonderful passion project event. Let’s take a look at what I did… PP 4.0

Highlights of the year:

My favourite moment this year in school was the spring trip we went to the bund because I had so much fun and it was such a nice, relaxing, fun day. In the trip, we even played laser tag and I aced it.

Health Class

Artifact 1:

Video

This was video I made with Mark about what is happening inside the brain every day. The Pre-frontal cortex and the amygdala are the two most important areas of our brain; they make almost every decision, and is responsible for why we have consciousness, and aren’t like other animals.

Artifact 2:

This was a review on a sleep-tracking app. I spent a whole week studying how well the app is at what it claims to do. I think I had just found my sleep savior.

PASSION Project 4.0

Description: Passion Project was an event aimed at helping students like me follow our passion more closely. It was essentially lots of time for me to design my own chess game. I really love chess, but sometimes, I just feel the game is a little boring. Therefore, I designed this greek-inspired board game to further follow my passion.

Artifacts:

Math Artifacts

Artifact 1:

In this unit, I created a wonderful question regarding algebra and the graphing of real-world scenarios. It took a lot of time, but it was fun knowing I could successfully create a good and hard question.

Artifact 2:

This assignment was all about exploding pumpkins. It was really fun and it created a wonderful scenario where courage, strength, and the ability to stay calm battled the amygdala of everyone’s brain. This was a real learning opportunity.

Español SLC

Artifact 1: Diez hábitos saludables poster

This year in spanish class, I was able to make considerable improvements in my spanish skills with the practice both in and outside of class. This poster is an example of how I showed my spanish skills during a project. Using the imperative tense and persuasive tone learned in class, I created this poster to recommend other people to do these healthy actions.

Artifact 2: DELE A1 Exam Pass

This year, I decided to take the DELE test. I took the A1 test recommended by my spanish teacher Señor Sergio. I had began preparing long before the exam day. I attended the DELE practice ASA and worked hard to review all the necessary materials assigned by Señor Sergio. This was the time I was most diligent in learning my spanish. I cannot stress how thankful I was for the effort I had put into studying. That last two weeks before the test was really just studying spanish all day. Thankfully, I passed the test with only the oral section slightly lacking.

Design Technology Tissue Box Drawings

Artifact 2: Tissue Box Drawings:

Here are my three drawings in the style of cubism that I drew to model my final tissuebox design.

These designs were all hand-drawn ideas I created. My favorite fruit is a mango so I drew a cubism-styled mango that is a 3D like drawing in 2D format. I love watching football matches so I decided to use the hole of the tissue box as the football pitch with the stadium and the stands (on the sides). These are all examples of using my passion as the main guidance for my final design. It is quite fitting as I am having my passion project right now.

Band Artifacts

This year, I’m very proud of my band journey. I’ve grown to love the “random” concerts that “happen.” This is especially true for the Pudong band concert where I didn’t practice nearly as enough but I still had a great time having that concert. There were more than 5 pieces and all of them, I mostly had to quickly learn that day, but I still managed to cook up a good job.

Pudong Festival Concert:

Halloween parade:

This parade was also a surprisingly successful event. I added many cool tricks on top of the main piece and it was really fun. I hope I could do that again in the future. This one, I was really ready for it. I didn’t have as much pressure and I played every note spot on. Even the roll was extremely cool. It was quite an event.

Empathize 2: My Tissue Box Tissue Box

Primary Research (Review of the work of my peers):

Secondary Research (Review of work online):

This semester in design tech, I spent a long time working on the research of many different products using the ACCESSFM format that helps deep analyzation of existing products related to my tissue box assignment. Primary analysis examines the works of my fellow classmates, which can help me in creating my own tissuebox as I can see what they did, when responding to the same prompt. Secondary analysis influences how I will design my tissuebox, how the exterior image will look like. This process is extremely important as it is the basis of my final tissuebox design. I hope my final tissuebox will be just as great if not better than these other designs.

Inquiry to Interest

Post WW2 Eastern Europe and Soviet Union:

This was the first project of the year in social studies. It was quite memorable as I still think about the same thing sometimes; did the Soviet Union really help Eastern Europe? I dove very deep into the many effects of the Soviet Union on Eastern Europe and it helped me understood the different styles of politics of Stalinist communism and more open forms of communist much better.
