I think Cultural Communication was one of my favorite units. This is because we got to learn about new cultures such as Indonesian Batik and Japanese Shibori.

Although I don’t have a photo of my batik, I think it came out really well for my first time, and also it was really fun making it. For my piece of batik, I put two turtles vertically symmetrical. We learned how to make batik more simplified. We dyed our cloth, painted wax on, and lastly dyed it again to make it two colors.

This is a photo of my project, a shibori-style cat bandana, on my cat. Instead of copying the shibori styles, we incorporated a bit of atsumi shibori and sekka shibori into a tie-dye cat bandana. We didn’t copy the style, but like sekka shibori, we used their folding style, and like atsumi shibori, we used tying techniques to make this cat bandana.
I learned about several important topics this unit, including an app that can assist me with my WOOP goal and help me stay focused on tasks while limiting my entertainment time. I gained knowledge on what anxiety is and other details, as well as information on various mental disorders such as eating disorders, OCD, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and depression.
I used to think that Anxiety wasn’t a big deal but now I know that anxiety isn’t a big deal is a myth and people with anxiety actually suffer from it. During the presentation making process I learned how to better communicate and collaborate. This is because if we didn’t communicate and talk to each other we would be working on separate presentations, not doing the work, etc.
In the presentation created by Greta, Isabella, and me, one surprising thing I learned about was that celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Adele experience anxiety. This surprised me because they often appear very happy in front of audiences or cameras. However, they have shared that when they return home or when the cameras are off, they struggle with their feelings and and manage their anxiety through therapy and meditation.
The StayFocusd Google Extension is a extension to block off websites you want to stop using and set time limits so you can stay as focused as possible.

The extension is really simple once you use it and check out all the functions. When added to your chrome, it will provide a tutorial which helps a lot but the extension in general has everything labeled so you know what to press. One complication I had was learning how to use it because there are so many features and I didn’t know which one was the blocked website for certain times because there is also a option to block the website forever. After the tutorial and playing around with it, it became much easier to use though.

1. The first feature is a pie chart that shows you which websites you are using the most and from there you can pick which ones are bad and need to have a time limit set.
2. The second gives you information about the website like the sessions and amount of ads. The websites with green circles are the websites you set times for to stop the excess use.
3. The third feature is the time setting feature. This is the feature where you can pick your websites and set a timer for them.
4. The fourth feature is the feature where you can pick days. For example, I set my time limits only for the week and on the weekend I can relax and let loose.

This app supports my WOOP goal because it helps me stay focused. My WOOP goal that I made was for me to set a app or extension to control my habit of procrastinating. The StayFocusd extension sets time limits for the websites that I stay on for too long, now when I am doing my work, I am more productive.

This extension could help student by setting limits on certain websites and make sure we only do our work. After we are done with our work, we have nothing to do so we will sleep. Sleeping is a really important for teens so this extension is very useful.

The design of this extension is pretty good because it’s confusing but comes with a tutorial which helps make things easy. There are many functions allowing more options for students or even adults to use and pick from.
African Penguins are endangered because people found something called ‘Guano’ which is the penguins poop. The people on the island found that guano was a very good insulator for the plants. The guano is something that is very important to the penguins life because it forms a burrow for the penguins and is a good insulator which keeps the burrows cool.
What are we doing to help protect them and increase their population?
We are trying to make a model for a house or ‘burrow’ for the African Penguins. We had a cold cup challenge where we used different insulators to wrap the cups and put ice in the cups. We tested the before mass of the ice and then put it in the cup under heater lights. After we did the after mass after 30 minutes we recorded the data. We saw the top best insulators and got to work to build a little model house. We only had an amount of 100 penguin bucks.
What scientific concepts did you have to understand in order to make the best nest for the penguin?
We had to use cause and effect which we used to get the masses of the ice and cause of what would when we had what thing. We also used energy and matter because in this unit we learned that in energy and matter heat always transfers from hot to cold.
This is one of the books that I recommend to people that are a little shy. I will give you guys a small sneak peak about why this book is good for overcoming fears and people that are pretty shy. So this book has a character that is called April Boxler and she is in sixth grade. There is also a fourth grade boy who is called Joey Byrd. April is one of those people that don’t want to be involved in middle school’s drama. So instead of going to recess she goes and volunteers for being the buddy bench monitor… but if you want to know more you’re going to need to borrow it from the library and read about this wonderful journey.
This is a link for my endangered species project for science. I chose the Yangtze Finless Porpoise. You can go click on the link below to go to my website about it.
Creating a portfolio, or blog is a great way to collect all the work you’ve done throughout your academic career. You can include academic, athletic, and personal artifacts or experiences that you want to share with a wider audience. This is a great way to organize all your learning in one place and you can take it with you when you leave SAS. When you make your portfolio, you create posts that are categorized according to your subject. Some categories have already been set up for you, but if you need more categories you can add them as needed. It’s important that your posts have the following:
An engaging title – this should not include the name of the subject since this is referenced in the category. Think of this as the first opportunity to engage and hook your reader!
Body – this is where you share your learning. This should include a combination of text and media in the form of images, graphics, and embedded videos. You should always consider how your post looks to your audience. Is it engaging and organized? Do they want to keep reading?
Category – select one that has been set for you or add a new category. Posts can have more than one category e.g. Humanities and Myself as a Learner
Tags – create tags that can be used as keywords to describe your post. Tags help organize your post a little more! Aim to have 3-5 tags for each post. For example, if you are posting about a novel you wrote, you might want the following tags: #Fiction, #MurderMystery, #Theme, #PlotDiagram
