Towards a Healthier Society

Mental health is one of the most important concepts to learn about, including key ideas such as stigmatization of some mental health disorders, how they are caused, and what are some effects they have on the victim and their family and friends.

Social media’s effect on teen’s mental health is mostly harmful, as not only does it perpetuate existing biases and stigma against those with mental health disorders, it also leads to bad habits such as mindless scrolling, bad sleep schedule, etc.

In class, we had a research project with every team researching about a specific mental health disorder (anxiety, depression, eating disorder, bipolar, OCD, and PTSD). My team chose to make a presentation about PTSD.

Before researching about PTSD, I believed that members of the military are diagnosed with PTSD more because of the exposure to traumatic experiences, but now after the researching process, I know that women actually are diagnosed more with PTSD due to abusive behavior. (e.g., sexual harassment)

To reduce the stigmatization of PTSD or any mental health condition, promoting awareness is crucial. Things like education in school, public lectures, or websites that deal with this stigma are all important and impactful on reducing stigma. To understand them more means to sympathize with victims of mental health disorders. This would result in a more friendly society where people understand the challenges and daily obstacles people with mental health disorders face and care for them.

Health Phones Wellness Reflection.

The issue we were researching in health class was: What is the impact of phones in school on HS students’s social emotional health and relationships?

  1. The evidence my partner (Jay Koo) and I gathered included articles from Edweek, highlighting the potential benefits regulations on phones can bring to both students and teachers. Principals and teachers report that students seem “more engaged” and “waking back up to a social experience” without constant phone distractions. The policies have helped reduce student “apathy” and anxiety/stress levels. Fewer discipline problems and “violent behaviors” have been observed.
  2. My opinion on this complicated issue is that next year, the school shouldn’t change the policy of allowing phones to be used. My reasoning is as follows: 1. This is a really good way to let high schoolers practice their time management, self-control, and balancing school with fun. High schoolers have no choice but to control themselves to not play their phones when they are supposed to be learning. Some parents may not agree with me because they would think that phones do a lot of damage to teen’s mental well-being.
  3. Some ways I can manage and control myself are to set time limits for my phone. I also don’t have most social media apps (no Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok, etc.). Even when I play games with my friends during break time, I would first check if my homework was all done. If my homework is not finished, I would tell my friends that I would join them after I finish the homework.

Scientific Brilliance Unleashed: The 6th Grade Science Genius Project

In 6th grade, we have a science project introducing the seasons. My partner and I chose a guiding question: Why is it colder in the winter than in the summer?

We created a model explaining why is it colder in the winter than in the summer.

As the earth orbits the sun, its tilt plays a crucial role in determining our weather patterns. During the winter months, the hemisphere you

find yourself in tilts away from the sun. This tilt affects the angle at which sunlight reaches us, leading to colder temperatures.

Furthermore, during winter, the days become shorter, and nights lengthen. This reduced daylight means less time for the sun’s rays to warm the earth’s surface, resulting in cooler temperatures. The longer nights also allow more time for the earth’s heat to escape into the atmosphere, contributing to the overall coldness.

Don’t forget about the summertime! During this time, the hemisphere tilts towards the sun, allowing sunlight to strike the earth more directly. The sun’s rays penetrate the atmosphere with greater intensity, providing us with a higher concentration of warmth.

MATH RACE CAR CHALLENGE

We used a lot of math for this race car project. We needed to calculate and use the knowledge of rates and ratios to predict our time of finishing the race.  The objective of the race is not to finish first, it is to have a closest 1 to 1 ratio of your predicted time to actual time. My team predicted a total time of 26 minutes and 30 seconds.

We needed to calculate the rates to figure out the final time. Using meters per second (mps) and seconds per meter (spm).

Our strategy was to count in our heads and hopefully get the timing right. If the first person was off by 1 minute less, then the second person tried to get 1 minute more. If the second person is off for 20 seconds, then the third person tries to make the timing perfect. The last person has the most burden. He needs to get it almost perfect to get a 1:1 ratio. So essentially, only the last person is doing something, the other 3 are just chilling.

We ended up with just 10 seconds off by our actual time. We got 26 minutes and 20 seconds instead of 26 minutes and 30 seconds. At last, our ratio was 1:1.007

Endangered Species Project (SCIENCE)

January 20, 2023

AMUR LEOPARD (weebly.com)

This is my endangered species project in science. This project was about introducing an endangered species that needs help and giving them alternatives to live. I chose the Amur Leopard, which is a type of leopard that lives in China and Eastern Russia. There are only about 50-80 individuals left in the ENTIRE WORLD.

I got full points on this project too.

Have a great Chinese New Year!

Report Cards are OUTT

Thursday, January 19, 2023 REPORT CARDS ARE OUT!

It’s middle school, and report cards are more important than most anything. This time, I actually got 9 exceeding! I never got that many before in my life!

I’ll keep studying hard and probably let my parents reward me with something too!

WISH ME LUCK!

ASMA Math

The first time I did the ASMA math test, I got 4 out of 7. It wasn’t a good score because I was aiming for 5 and above. Math was my favorite subject, and I was pretty discouraged because of this 4 out of 7 score.

Then there was another ASMA math test, but I decided to not join because I don’t want to get a bad score. After a few weeks, there was ANOTHER ASMA test, and this time, I didn’t accept 5 or below. It turns out the test wasn’t the hardest because I solved the 7 problems in only 25 minutes.

I’m waiting for the test scores. HOPE ME LUCK!

All About ME!

This is my all about me post. I included four symbols that describe me, along with five words and a paragraph that all try to describe myself. At the rightmost of the page, there are three of my favorite books. Legend trilogy, inheritance games, and okay for now.

Welcome to Your New Portfolio!

Why have a digital portfolio at SAS?

Creating a portfolio, or blog is a great way to collect all the work you’ve done throughout your academic career. You can include academic, athletic, and personal artifacts or experiences that you want to share with a wider audience. This is a great way to organize all your learning in one place and you can take it with you when you leave SAS.  When you make your portfolio, you create posts that are categorized according to your subject. Some categories have already been set up for you, but if you need more categories you can add them as needed. It’s important that your posts have the following:

  • An engaging title – this should not include the name of the subject since this is referenced in the category. Think of this as the first opportunity to engage and hook your reader!
  • Body – this is where you share your learning. This should include a combination of text and media in the form of images, graphics, and embedded videos. You should always consider how your post looks to your audience. Is it engaging and organized? Do they want to keep reading?
  • Category – select one that has been set for you or add a new category. Posts can have more than one category e.g. Humanities and Myself as a Learner
  • Tags – create tags that can be used as keywords to describe your post. Tags help organize your post a little more! Aim to have 3-5 tags for each post. For example, if you are posting about a novel you wrote, you might want the following tags: #Fiction, #MurderMystery, #Theme, #PlotDiagram
