Math

In semester 1, I have been a proactive learner, who values learning concepts deeply, and consistently challenges myself. My strengths include my ability to identify and evaluate functions, calculate slopes across various contexts, as well as demonstrating my understanding in the triangle and angle congruency unit, and demonstrating a solid understanding of volume calculations and exponential expressions. My transformation skills are strong, particularly in working with negative scale factors, though he would benefit from continued precision in geometric reflections. As a collaborative learner, I contribute meaningfully to classroom discussions and shares alternative methods to solve problems. I demonstrated my academic keenness by showing initiative to pursue extension opportunities, engage in optional challenging work, and independently research
mathematical concepts. However, even though I might excels in going above and beyond basic requirements and tackling complex mathematical challenges, I have
personal areas for improvement, including preparation consistency and proactively seeking feedback. The first artifact shows my strength of description and understanding of the different aspects of my graph, while the second artifact demonstrates my graphing skills in the first semester, while the third artifact demonstrates my growth in graphing in the second semester, as I compared 2 different piecewise functions, the third artifact shows my growth, as it is more advanced with discontinued lines.

Science

I demonstrated exceptional active learning habits, consistently completing L4 assignments and by participating in class while asking valuable questions. My commitment is shown through my work on optional extension activities, particularly in the Developing and Using Models standard, where I excelled
in creating an impressive video demonstrating scientific modeling of seasons and planetary distances. To elevate his scientific communication, I can
focus on enriching the reasoning section of his Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) writing by incorporating more in-depth scientific content. This approach will
help me deepen his scientific arguments and showcase his comprehensive understanding. I am ready to continue his strong progress into the second
semester. I also wish I could incorporate more color in my models next semester. I have also stabilized my position as an active learner as shown in the active learner rubric, I have also turned in all of my homework on time. Some areas of improvement include my CER writing on less repetition, although I have already achieved a good level, I wish to explore more scientific concepts to improve my CER plus and achieve a 4.

Social Studies Artifacts

My 2 artifacts demonstrate my growth this year in writing concisely. This is because, during my first project of the year, I wrote too much for each section explaining Kanye’s relevance and had a lot of redundancy. My second artifact on the other hand, utilizes a more concise explanation, as well as paraphrasing of long unimportant pieces of evidence.

My Goals:

My progress toward my goal of getting a MUN speaker award is well onthe right track, as in the last 2 conferences I have achieved an “Honorable Mention”, and I plan on achieving this goal by striving to be the main submitter in every conference.

My second goal was to complete every L4 assignment, I have achieved this goal in the second semester, as I have tried for every L4 assignment, including the science optional L4s. I wish to keep working on this goal in the second semester so I can continue to achieve exceeding in all of my classes.

My third goal is to read for 30 minutes every night. I think I am well on my way to achieve this goal this year, as I have completed my reading writing passport well before the deadline, while achieving an exceeding. This shows my process, because of the “reading habits” section with the reading journal that requires me to read for at least 30 minutes a day, for 18 days, for one quarter.

Student’s Mental Health Taking a Detrimental Toll From Social Media

I used to think that social media would have had a positive impact on student’s lives for its use to relief the student’s from stress; However, now I know that social media actually has a negative impact on both the student’s mental health, and their emotional intelligence. I know this because through research I found out that students not only have fewer face-to-face interactions with others because of the effect of phones and social media, it also negatively impacts their mental health, as it spreads false and negative stigmas for teens to follow impossible standards. This could cause mental conditions, such as anxiety, depression, and eating disorders. Furthermore, these stigmas cause teens to be even less likely to seek help, as society sees mental health issues as unimportant and a sign of weakness.

I believe that these harmful stigmas exist because of negative portrayals on social media, as well as in popular films, which characterize people with mental health conditions as dangerous which is a really unreal portrayal. Stigmas may also come from cultural backgrounds where some families believe mental health conditions to be a sign of weakness, and a “myth”.

I think the only way to reduce stigmas, is through the educational systems, to help teens cope with mental health conditions, and help them learn how to cope with it as well as help them understand the condition and provide a safe space for them to seek help. I think educating the parents and society members is also important to make them understand the true detrimental effects of mental health conditions so they would provide a safer space for people with mental health conditions to seek help. I think this method would be extremely helpful, as it would help more people understand the concept, destroying the negative stigmas from society as a whole.

It is important for teens to understand mental health conditions, because as we learned, most mental health conditions begin to show signs at 14, and a majority of people are likely to experience these issues later on in their life. Helping teens understand them and cope with them at a young age is extremely important as it will make the teens more comfortable with coping with these conditions, and making sure they are never afraid to seek help.

Health Project: What is the impact of cell phones on highschool students’ social emotional health and relationships?

In this unit we researched the impact of cell phones in school for high school students and how they impacted their friendships, social skills, and their social-emotional health. Through our research we concluded that cell phones had impacted highschoolers emotional intelligence negatively, this is because, through research from the Pew Research Center and an interview with an actual 9th grader, it was claimed that they would actually text their friends rather than go for face to face interactions when they’re in school. This leads to their social skills devolving and their relationships becoming more distant. In my opinion, increased cell phone use would invoke me to spend more time online, scrolling, and texting instead of actually speaking with my friends in person, and or interacting in physical activities. This will also impact others because since nobody is interacting face to face anymore, the only way for them to communicate is through phones and media, this will cause students to be worse at reading emotions therefore having worse social awareness and emotional awareness. In my opinion, the only way to solve this issue is to reduce cellphone use in school in order to save students’ relationships and social-emotional health. One strategy that would help me ensure the health of my relationships is setting a screen time each day so I would have to interact with my friends to cure my boredom. I would also study with my friends so I would no longer have to text them on my phone, instead I could just talk to them face to face.

“Increased screen time and reliance on digital communication can make it more challenging for teens to develop strong face-to-face social skills. They may struggle with things like making eye contact, reading nonverbal cues, and having natural conversations” (Pew Research Center 2024).

WOOP Goal 2: Sleeping 9 hours a day

I wish to sleep 9 hours a day, as it would help me perform better in school, have a better mood in the mourning to interact with other people, and have better health; my mind and body would feel more refreshed in the mourning. This goal is important to me for me to perform better in school, fix my procrastination, and perform better on long tests such as the MAP test this week. My plan was to sleep 9 hours a day; However, an obstacle that occurred was that I would stay up late to do my homework and waste my time talking to my friends on WeChat very late. My plan helped me overcome this obstacle because I made a plan for me to start doing my homework earlier, and at the latest sleep at 10:10 so I would have at least 9 hours of sleep every day. I will also better arrange my time, by going to my room as soon as I finish dinner to start doing homework or do my homework in the car depending on the amount of homework I have that week. This got rid of my problem of wasting time doing homework at the last moment of the day and talking to my friends, wasting my time. I knew that I had to make a plan for me to get to build this habit and crush my habit of procrastination. This is because in order to build a habit, you would have to be self-aware of the problem and make a plan to repeat until you build a good habit.

Race Car Reflection

In the race car project, we used ratios of meters per second to try and predict our speed of moving in the car, we were also sustainable by using reused cardboard to build our car. If we could do this again, we would try and communicate better on if we should go faster or slower because we were doing well near the end, but we miscalculated and had to tell our last racer to go much faster. The time trials were extremely important because we had to calculate how many tiles in the hallway we ran in how many seconds, and then measure the tiles to estimate our ratios of meters to seconds. The people who didn’t use the time trials failed very badly because they didn’t know how fast they needed to move and how fast they were moving right now.

Board Game Design Planning

This is a board game that I designed. This is called Castle Seige, and it is a game that helps you make decisions on what is right and worth the risk, and what is safer to do. I will make these game pieces using the 3D modeling application and the laser cutter
