G8 Health – Healthy relationships reflection

In health class, we developed our own WOOP goals (wish, outcome, obstacle, plan) based on a statement that we want to work on in aspects of healthy relationships. I chose to work on spending more time with my loved ones and important people. Because of school work, I notice that as we grow up, theres less time for us to play and spend time with important people, so I chose to work on increasing it as a goal.

Here is my woop goal:

To work on my goal, I texted one of my close friends to hang out together on someday, since we haven’t met each other in a while. On the weekends, I finished my homework effectively so I was able to go out with my friend.

I also spent time with my family in the weekends🏠

I think it’s extremely important to appreciate the relationships you have, and I felt lively and energetic after this experience.

G8 Health – Mental Health Unit

Mental health – a deeply misunderstood health disorder with stigmatization that has been spread around for years and decades. Mental health, especially at the stage of teenage development, is a vital issue that should be noticed and taken care with awareness.

During this units presentation, our group (special thanks to group members Kaelyn and Iris being very supportive) focused on researching depression. Depression is a commonly diagnosed mental disorder but also held with numerous misconceptions. Up to 5% of the adult world population has been diagnosed with depression. It seems like a small deal, but it would mean that 1 out of every 20 adults have depression while many others with depression may have not been diagnosed.

Symptoms:

  • Lack of concentration
  • feelings of low self-worth
  • hopelessness about the future
  • thoughts about death
  • Inability to sleep
  • changes in appetite
  • low in energy.

Some common stigmatization include:

1.Many think that depression is not a big deal as it can just naturally heal itself.

2. Depression is just pure sadness and self pity.

3. Only women gets affected by depression

4. It is easy to spot if a person is depressed.

5. It is easy to spot if a person is depressed.

Possible methods to cure

  1. Meeting with a therapist to talk it through and find coping mechanisms that fit for you.
  2. Antidepressants (taking medicine) such as prescribing SSRI, triclinic drugs, etc.
  3. Change your surrounding environment & spend time with ones that you love and support you.

Essential vocabulary:

Stigmatization: the action of describing or regarding someone or something as worthy of disgrace or great disapproval.

Depression:  Depression involves a depressed mood or loss of pleasure or interest in activities for long periods of time. Depression is different from regular mood changes and feelings about everyday life (World Health Organization).

Mental Disorder: wide range of mental health conditions — disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior.

Personal Reflection:

This health unit taught me plenty of knowledge that i did not know prior to these lessons. It helped me be aware of my surroundings and know why it is important to take care of mental health and the mental health of people around me. I also had some misunderstandings that were fixed through deepening my understanding of mental disorders such as PTSD, bipolar disorder, and depression. I used to think that PTSD was not a serious deal since trauma was a common social media trend before. Now, I know that PTSD is an actual mental disorder caused by severe trauma and that we should respect and take note of it.

Health L4 Wellness App Review

Functionality:

The app is simple to understand and use as it only takes a few minutes to set up. You can press an add habit button, set up how frequently you will do this task and the time, days in a week, and then you will be all set to go. The app consists of a list of your habits, and you can easily press “done” with a click. The app sends notifications for the time you want to do this task to remind you. It also shows a calendar with which days you have completed this habit or not, which is helpful for tracking how your habit has been going. There are some advanced features such as _, but that will need payment to unlock those special features.

Usefulness:

Woop goal:

The app helped remind me to sleep by time. Once I got used to sleeping at 10:30 a few days, I tend to remember to sleep by that time. This helped me have more rest and better mental health.

In this app, you can log your feelings daily and develop healthy habits that you want to have. Logging your emotions can help you recognize how you are feeling, reflect on your recent life, and meditate, rest, or play when needed. Taking time to rest also is a way to help with stress. This app is beneficial for both mental and physical health depending on which kind of habit you want to form. You can set goals to exercise daily or take a rest from work once in a while. Exercising will help you improve your physical health, but meditation and rest will help improve brain health.

Design:

This app uses a humane design and is not addictive. Unlike social media, the app is only used to track and record daily habits, and it doesn’t have features such as ads, videos, or content posts. This will avoid users from being addicted to the app as people tend to seek unknown information like scrolling through videos, Instagram, etc.  This app can help users form habits or to stop bad habits. It will help users live a better, healthy, organized, and successful life. However, if you ignore the app, it may not add value but that is a personal decision. Therefore, if the app is used frequently, it is impactful to ones life. It is beneficial as it helps you form or dismiss habits, so the impact, no matter long or short term, is beneficial. Users can be more organized using this app, living a better aspect of their life depending on what type of habit they want to form. Users will also be proud of their achievements, helping them with greater mental health.

I chose this project as one of my artifacts for social studies because I thought that was my best done project. During this unit, we had the privilege to research on a topic of interest and create a graphic poster. Above was my final poster and I am proud of it. ☺️

Artifact 2 – World War 1 Analysis Essay📝
https://portfolios.saschina.org/michelle01px2029/wp-content/uploads/sites/551/2025/02/8D1_Michelle_Chen_WWIessay.pdf

In this unit, we got to learn about the factors, events, and effects of World War 1, also known as the great war. We had the opportunity to run a WW1 Simulation with in our class, and it was specifically interesting and enjoyable. During this unit we also wrote an analysis/research essay based on an specific topic or event in WW1. I am also proud to present this essay to you🙇‍♀️.

Sem 2 G8 SlC – Math 🔢

Artifact 1 – Math sticker design 🧑‍🎨

This artifact is one of our projects that we created. The project was to create a sticker design fully using the mathematical transformations: translation, reflection, dilation, and rotation. I am proud of this project as it corporates elements of SDG #16 – Peace, justice, and strong institutions. This artifact demonstrates my ability as an creative learner and a critical thinker as I was able to design both digitally and by hand using my skills but to also explain the transformations and other questions using my critical thinking skills.

Artifact 2 – Math class notes 🗒️

This artifact was a page of notes taken in a regular class. These notes show my ability to be organized and to be focused in class, as it also helped me get better at note taking. I started to understand why note taking is crucial and supportive to my learning progress through these practices. These notes also show my progress in math as in what we learn in a daily (every class) basis.

Sem 2 G8 SLC – Chinese

Sem 2 G8 SLC – P.E.

Throughout this year of P.E., we got to experience multiple different sports. The unit that I enjoy most was badminton. Although I don’t play badminton, I am still able to play with my friends and enjoy the process of playing and learning this sport.

Ratio and Rates-Car Race!

Last class in math, we were having a car race! In this unit, we have been learning about ratio and rates. Our final project/challenge was the Eagle 500! In the Eagle 500, we had to predict the total time our car would be running and have a closest 1:1 ratio with the actual time.  Me and my team mates Isabella, Katie, Shelley  built a donut car with cardboard and some plastic bottles. We calculated each persons walking rates with meter per second, and using this to calculate our predicted time. If I could redo this project, I would count in my head while racing, so our time would be closer to our predicted.  At last, we got a ratio of 0.996:1, which was very close. Over all, I think our group did a wonderful job!

Saving the African Penguins

In this unit, we have been learning about the endangered African Penguin. Their guano (nest/poop) was taken by humans for the rich nutrients in it. They had no shelter to keep heat and predators away, which is leading them to extinction. To save them, we started designing a nest to save them.

Me and my partner Caroline designed a nest, using the best insulators from the cold cup challenge, such as cotton, wood, and felt. We put many layers on the top to prevent heat getting inside the nest.

All About me Page

All About Me

I am a student, artist, traveler. I was born from HongKong, but I have lived at Shanghai for more than ten years.

below is my All About Me poster 🙂

Endangered Species Project

I chose to research and do a project about snow leopards. They’re  so cute! While researching, I also learned how to analyze a graph, using the sentence starters This graph shows… I see… This means… and this is because…. Analyzing graphs can also help us understand more! I feel sad for those snow leopards. They are endangered and might even go extinct in the future.

Below is my Thinglink project.

Welcome to Your New Portfolio!

Why have a digital portfolio at SAS?

Creating a portfolio, or blog is a great way to collect all the work you’ve done throughout your academic career. You can include academic, athletic, and personal artifacts or experiences that you want to share with a wider audience. This is a great way to organize all your learning in one place and you can take it with you when you leave SAS.  When you make your portfolio, you create posts that are categorized according to your subject. Some categories have already been set up for you, but if you need more categories you can add them as needed. It’s important that your posts have the following:

  • An engaging title – this should not include the name of the subject since this is referenced in the category. Think of this as the first opportunity to engage and hook your reader!
  • Body – this is where you share your learning. This should include a combination of text and media in the form of images, graphics, and embedded videos. You should always consider how your post looks to your audience. Is it engaging and organized? Do they want to keep reading?
  • Category – select one that has been set for you or add a new category. Posts can have more than one category e.g. Humanities and Myself as a Learner
  • Tags – create tags that can be used as keywords to describe your post. Tags help organize your post a little more! Aim to have 3-5 tags for each post. For example, if you are posting about a novel you wrote, you might want the following tags: #Fiction, #MurderMystery, #Theme, #PlotDiagram

Click on the images below to find a few helpful tips for creating your posts, adding media, and making categories:
