School and Work: I am satisfied with the way I pay attention, participate, and prepare homework for my classes, extracurriculars, volunteer work, or job.
Spirituality: I seek forgiveness from family and friends when I have hurt them.
Handling Emotions: I am satisfied with the way I handle my emotions and how that affects my relationships.
Rest and Play: I truly enjoy my recreational involvement in activites at school, at my place of worship, in the community, or with logal organizations.
Healthy Relationships: I am satisfied with the amount of time I spend with the important people in my life.
Stress Resilience: When I face a life challenge, I feel confident that I handle the accompanying stress in a healthy way.
Organization: I organize my time and plan ahead to make sure that I allow enough time to get everything done.
Care for the Body: I am satisfied with the amount of exercise I get on a regular basis.
This is my second WOOP goal, and it is based on the topic of healthy relationships. I chose this compass statement from that category: I am satisfied with the amount of time I spend with the important people in my life. Although this is not the statement that I have the lowest score to, I chose it because I still think I can work on this and it is a very important part of me sustaining healthy relationships.
My wish was to spend more time with my friends and family at school and at home, and I took a few steps to reach this goal/wish. Firstly, I spent less time in the library during lunches and instead stayed with my friends so we could have a good time together and it also allowed me to spend more quality time with those who are important to me.
Another example is how I spent time with my brother by playing cards with him on two different nights, and that allowed me to fulfill my wish and increase my score on the statement of spending quality time with people who are important to me.
I was able to overcome my obstacle by putting my phone away when I was spending time with friends and family, and this allowed me to not get easily distracted by text messages and go back to texting online instead of actually spending time with others.
I think this WOOP goal allowed me to realize that I should probably spend more quality time with individuals important to me on a daily basis, since it not only strengthens my bonds with these people but also makes me happy as I am having fun with my friends and family by hanging out with them. This is something I plan to continue in the future, as I see multiple benefits coming from it and I think it can really be good for me.
In unit 2, we learned about mental tech, media, and mental health. I learned a lot through the projects that we did throughout this unit. For tech and media, the main showcase of work was through the wellness app review. The wellness app review allowed me to understand much more about how certain apps can either support an individual in reaching a certain goal or stand as an obstacle to them reaching their goal. I used to not use any apps to help me track my work and that resulted in me not being able to reach my goals due to nothing motivating me and keeping me in control. However, now I can take advantage of the existing apps and use them to help me reach my goals.
My goals can be in multiple different forms, but the type of goal that we learned about in unit 2 is the WOOP goal, which is the Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan goal. It is a great way for people to organize their thoughts and create a plan for them to reach their goals. My WOOP goal was related to me being on my phone and social media too much. This resulted in my not being able to focus on my school work for more than just around 15 minutes. Therefore, my goal was to focus and study without interruptions for 30 minutes. This goal was later used when I tested out the app iBetter. I think through identifying my goal and moving towards it, I was able to grow and get more used to doing my work and staying focused.
We also learned about social media and its impact on our brains. We watched multiple videos as well as reading articles that explained some of these impacts. For example, we learned that one thing social media can do to us is forcing people to multitask. This happens since people are prone to distractions, and also tend to want to check social media no matter what they are doing. This means that people tend to multitask when they are working and end up also being on social media. Another example can be how social media encourages constant social comparison, whether it’s with people we know in real life or influencers online. This can lead to self consciousness and may make some people feel bad about themselves.
The image shows a person feeling bad about themselves after being harmed on social media. Teens are especially sensitive when it comes to such topics, because they tend to spend large amounts of time on social media, meaning they are more likely to compare themselves to others, feel bad about themselves, etc. In addition, they are easily influenced by the society so they can be easy targets for people online and their mental health may be harmed. They may not understand the people aren’t actually what they look like online, and this misconception may lead to lots of harm towards teens.
Speaking of mental health, the second big project that we did was the presentation on a certain mental disorder. Our class split into 6 groups, each with around 3-4 people. Each group researched and presented a different mental disorder, explaining the symptoms, treatment, precautions, misconceptions, etc. My group did the Bipolar Disorder, and we all researched the disorder and made a presentation that we later presented to the class.
In addition, before we did the presentations, we looked at multiple graphs showing statistics related to mental health disorders. From those graphs, we could see that the percentages of people with mental health disorders are increasing, meaning it is even more important to understand and acknowledge these disorders so that we can try to help these individuals recover or improve.
Overall, these are the main points that we learned in unit 2.
I chose this essay as one artifact for my critical thinking because through analyzing information and turning that into an essay, I was able to showcase my critical thinking. In addition, through this essay I was able to consider multiple approaches to analyzing a separate article and using that as information for my own essay.
This is a CER from science that we did in unit 3. We analyzed multiple different pieces of evidence and used it as evidence to support a claim. I was able to use various perspectives and approaches to evaluate the evidence and make decisions on how I wanted to make my claim and reasoning.
Core Subject: Math 🧮
I will now share my progress in Math…
This is a COL I did in class, and it is a mid unit quiz in the geometry unit. This quiz shows that I understand the work we did in class and am able to apply the information I learned in class and use that in my tests so I am able to do well. Although sometimes I do make small mistakes on my tests, I am still able to fix them in time so I can still get good grades on my tests.
This is my story board organizer I did for linear functions. It required me to create/write a word problem and solve for a question in the problem. I also had to find and write down all the intervals of increase and decrease, in addition to the slopes, domain, range, and x and y intercepts. Along with finding these, we had to write out the meaning of each number and explain what the slope and steepest part of the graph means. This was one of the biggest projects we did in math this year.
This is the story board me and three other students made in our first ELA unit on writing narratives. This story board is the result of our group using AI to generate images that represents the segment of the story that we wrote for our individual essays. Each student chose a section in the story to write more about (the product is below), and we needed to use AI and generate 3 pictures for the small section each person wrote about.
This writing is also from unit 2, when we wrote narratives for our Netflix AI project. We chose a section from our AI written narrative and expanded on that, adding details, description, dialogue, and more to make the story better. Through this project, I was able to learn how to more effectively incorporate description into my writing and realize how important that is to narrative writing.
This is my active learner science rubric that we updated and did again in January. It shows my own evaluation on my active learning and gives some information on how I’m doing on multiple standards in science class.
Understanding of Key Concepts:
This is a screenshot from my gradebook on standard 6, and it shows that I am currently doing pretty well on evaluating information. It shows that I am able to understand key concepts in class and I also did the optional L4 Extension.
Growth in Science:
This is a model that I made with a partner on Ocean currents and how it affects Earth in various ways. This model is also evidence of Standard 1: Developing and Using Models. It includes all the requirements of a model and is a way to show what we often do in class. It is also an example of me and my partner having the ability to analyze information and summarize information into a model/graph. It also shows that I grew in my ability to draw models because in the beginning, I was not really good at drawing models that fulfilled all the requirements of a model.
I chose this artifact because it was a project that I really enjoyed and I think I did well on. I think this demonstrated my growth in research. I was able to learn how to more effectively gather information and summarize it to fit the needs of the project, in addition to making it easier to understand for the reader and myself. This was from unit 1, and it was my inquiry into interest project where I made a poster and it included information about my inquiry question, which was about online shopping in China and how that shaped its economy.
I chose my WWI essay to share and show because I think through the process of writing this essay, I was able to learn a lot about the history of Russia and more about the topic I chose, as well as improving on my skills in analyzing information/analyzing evidence as I really needed to understand the evidence before I wrote sections in my essay. I really enjoyed this unit and I was happy that I wrote a decent essay about the dissolution of the Russian Empire and its affects on WW1.
This is my WWI letter, where we were put in partnerships to write letters to each other, one person being the soldier and one being the family member. This is my letter, where I was the family member writing to the soldier in war. This letter shows my French writing abilities and how I can use the vocabulary that I learned to write better.
When writing this letter, one struggle was that I needed to incorporate a lot of new vocabulary that we learned into the letter to better explain what life was like for the soldiers and family members during WWI.
This is my second artifact, and it is a poster on some health benefits and harms of sleeping well or not sleeping well. I included many new vocabulary that we learned in Unit 2, and it helped me better explain my topic through this poster and a presentation.
Health:
I will now share my progress in Health…
I’m taking half year health this semester, so there is only around 2 months worth of artifacts.
This is the first project we did, which we worked on as a group of 4. We researched exercise and how it can help reduce stress. Then, we made a brochure that we printed out and presented to the class. The first page of the presentation is the research that we did, and we learned a lot about how exercise can help release stress. The second page is an activity we did with the class, where we prepared some fun partner and single person exercises so the class could move around and hopefully release some stress.
This is my second artifact, and it is an app review that we did in our second unit. Here, we learned about habits that people have and the WOOP goal, where we all set a goal and reviewed an app that was related to our goal. We then made a long portfolio post that showed evidence of us using the app for at least 7 days and explained the logistics about the app. It also included our perspectives on the app and if there could be improvements.
Art:
I will now share my progress in Art…
I took half year art last semester and this semester I have health.
This is the first project we did in art last semester, and it was a mini unit about the balance of art. We each used an A3 paper and drew designs on it. Then, we used a template and cut the paper to make 3D shapes such as triangular prisms and cylinders. Afterwards, we were put into groups and put our small 3D shapes together to make a big project. In order to make it look like it was balanced, we glued the tips together and tried to make it stand up. We also decorated the base with scraps from our A3 papers that were not used in the 3D shape.
This is an individual project I did in art. I made a tomato with clay and colored it so it would look like a tomato. Before we worked with clay, we drew a plan and on that plan, I explained how the tomato would be made. The base (tomato) was made with two pinch pots put together, and the leaves at the top were made of coils. This is because it was mandatory to have coils in our project. In addition, my tomato is empty in the middle so things can be placed in it. This also makes the leaves kind of like a cap to the pot, since it covers up the opening.
PE:
I will now share my progress in PE…
This is an image of water polo, which is one of the different sports we learned and played in PE class in the swim unit. We learned different drills and practiced those to play in class. In class, we split into groups and played small games of water polo. The last class was a big game that consisted of all the members in the class and the court took up most of the swimming pool.
This is an image of a badminton game, and badminton is a unit we recently worked on. Our class was split into two, one in the middle school gym and one group in the high school gym. The groups were split based on experience. We worked on some skills at the beginning of class and then started to play doubles or singles badminton with the class.
My Strengths 💪🏻:
Some of my strengths are…
Turning in work on time.
Communication with peers when doing group work or even just socializing.
Areas of Growth:
Participate and speak up more in class.
Try not to sit with people I will get distracted with so I can finish more work in all classes.
Highlights of the year:
My favorite lessons, moments, activities, days of the year were…because…
One of my two favorite projects we did this year was the WWI stimulation. It was fun and we were able to experience what it was like during the war, and it felt nice when the country I represented won the stimulation war.
Another highlight is the math pumpkin timebomb, where we estimated with statistics and graphs the amount of rubber bands it would take to explode a pumpkin. This was a group project and placing the rubber bands on the pumpkin was really fun.
Closing:
Thank you for listening to my progress towards my goals over the last year. Do you have any questions?
My wellness app is iBetter, and it is an app that mainly acts as a habit tracker. This is where an individual can insert their goal and add notification times, how long the goal should last, and even gives a summary of how many days you succeeded with achieving this goal. In addition, the app provides a prize method that gives you motivation to work and achieve your goal in order to obtain a certain prize.
On iBetter, you can see a calendar of the month that tracks how many times you achieved your goal that month. The way you achieve your goal is to check the checkmark on the screen, and that turns the day green on the calendar, meaning you extended your streak. Additionally, you get small prizes and badges every single day for extending your streak and following the habit you put into the app. The image below is the page where there is the calendar, and you can see that each day turns green if you check the mark that you finished work that day. According to this photo, you can see that up to March 2nd, I have followed my habit and goal for 8 days. Following this image will be some evidence of the notifications I got the past few days. However, I don’t have images all the way to the beginning when I started this app.
These images are the notifications I recently received that reminded me to put my phone away or encouraged me since I already met my goal that day. I set a reminder at 5:30 to put my phone away each day so I can meet my WOOP goal. The last image shows a notification coming at 5:30 on March 4th, proving that the app gives on time notifications in order to remind the user to work on their goal or habit. This is a very useful feature on the app since if I am scrolling on my phone, I can remember to put it down when this notification pops up at 5:30. This app not only reminds you at the time you set a reminder, but also tells you to work on your goal throughout the day, which I think is a very good addition to the regular reminder time because I can work on my goal at any other time as well.
This app is overall pretty easy to use and it is very straightforwards. As the user further explores the app, they can find more features to it that may help them when trying to achieve their goal.
As of March 4th, I already have a 10 day streak working on my goal with this app so these photos are from a few days ago. However, they are still a great example of some features this app provides. The first image shows one of the home pages, and it includes your streak, achievements, and tasks at the very top. Following that, it reminds you how many days left you should continue until the end of 2025, encouraging the user to continuously use the app until the year ends and their habits form. In addition, iBetter provides a weekly record and overall records of your learning and goals, giving the user a bigger picture of how they are doing in terms of sustaining their goals.
The second image is what shows up on your screen after you press the checkmark and keep your streak for that day. It gives you a badge or prize, encouraging the users to continue on with their goal.
This image is my lock screen, where I also circled where the app is. As you can see, there is a small notification for when you didn’t finish your goal yet for that day. For people like me who generally like to discard notifications when I see them, it serves as a good reminder for me to work on my WOOP goal so I can check the box and make the notification disappear. For anyone, really, this notification can also remind them when they open their phones, even if its for another app.
On the design of this app, I think it has been designed well because it does not have any distractions that can be addictive to the user and provide harmful impacts to the user. At the same time, I think this app is able to add value to the users life because it is a good tool that people can use to sustain their goals and remember anything they want as long as they insert it into the app. A long term impact of using this app can be that individuals start to follow their goals and meet their goals quicker and more easily since they have gotten into a habit that would help them get to their goals. However, on the more negative side, users my be overly reliant on the app and won’t be able to follow their habits without reminders.
Above is an image of my WOOP goal, and iBetter helps me achieve and continue on with my goal. This is because since my goal is to put my phone away and study continuously without interruption for 30 minutes, the best app that could help me is a habit and reminder app, telling me that I should start my 30 minutes. iBetter does exactly that, and it is a very useful app for anyone that wants to reach a goal. However, there are ways to bypass this app, like any app, but just pressing the checkmark everyday without doing any work. I think this is inevitable in any app, so it is not a big issue, at least not if the user really wants to reach their goal and develop a habit.
For me, this app has been useful in helping me develop the habit of putting my phone away and studying when it reminds me and that has helped me feel less stressed since I am able to productively work for 30 minutes, getting the most out of the time I have available to do homework and other work. This leads to me feeling less stressed since I won’t have as much work piling up since I won’t get distracted by my phone during these 30 minutes of productive working time.
This app could help me improve my brain and body health because it is good for my body that I don’t feel constantly stressed about my school work sand that I plan out my time so I finish things every day. It is also good for my brain that I don’t feel stressed so my brain can rest so that I am able to finish more work and think clearly throughout the day. Less stress can also lead to me having more energy, being happier, and many other benefits can exist.
In unit 1 of health, we learned about the development of a human brain and how a teen’s brain is different from the brain of humans at different ages. The amygdala is the part of your brain where you have the FFF and if it gets triggered, you go into flight, fight, or freeze mode. Teens have a slightly more undeveloped pre-frontal cortex in comparison to adults, meaning they tend to act more irrationally and think less, especially when the amygdala gets triggered.
This is a thought map that we made in class, and it shows how your thoughts and actions are connected. It shows the emotions people go through after having a thought and how that thought can effect whether or not someone does something how they want to.
In math class, we did an Eagle 500 race where we made cars and had to predict the rate and time it would take us to walk or run around the whole track according to the distance of the track. Here is a photo where we are preparing to start the race. We had to predict how long it would take us to walk around the whole track and if our prediction was the closest to the actual time we took to finish the race, we would win. We were given time to record how long it would take us to walk a certain amount and we used that data to calculate how long it would take us according to the distance of the race that was given to us the day of the race. We used ratios and rates for this project. If we could redo something, I would walk just a little bit faster because we would be more on time. We used meters and that was very helpful because the distance was also measured in meters.
This is the cardboard box my team made in Design Tech. This is Aiden’s because we only finished his. This box is for putting the materials from our recycled games. We are using recycled cardboard to make this box. We used box cutter knifes, hot glue, and cutting matts. We first trace the outline of the box with a pen on the cardboard. We used a template to trace. Then, we cut the box out and hot glue it into the shape of a box. We were being safe because we closed the knife when we did not use it and we put cutting matts under. I learned how to make a box.
This is the unfinished plan I made for my board game. I included what the board will look like and the card and the die. I will also later include the other cards and the rules.
