Goal for Semester 2:

Improve the quality of my work, specifically Process Journals.

Teens’ mental health

  1. Describe how media could influence teen mental health: Media throughout society influences teens’ mental health by enforcing negatively-influencing ideas/concepts into their minds.
  2. Explain why you think mental health stigma exists and how we could reduce stigma: Mental health stigma exists due to the stemming of certain stereotypes from social media. Advocating that stigmas are usually inaccurate as well as harmful to individuals suffering from a particular mental health condition.
  3. Summarize what you have learned about mental health conditions and why it is important for teens to understand them: There is a variety of mental health conditions, negatively impacting all kinds of individuals regardless of gender, race, or age. Despite the importance of treatment for mental health issues, mental conditions are often disregarded, potentially leading to further complications in life. It is crucial for teens to understand such mental health issues as they are able to understand the existence potentially similar obstacles in themselves as well as their peers.

The impact of phones on highschool students – reflection

B2

  1. The evidence collected from the sources provided revealed that while phones can be essential tools for connectivity between students, they can be extremely distracting as well, consequently leading to lack of face-to-face interactions between students. This could potentially result in a decrease in vital EQ skills.
  2. My opinion on cell phones being unrestricted next year in highschool is relatively neutral, since I acknowledge both perspectives of cell phones. However, I believe that as students mature, there should be less restrictions with phones as they are helpful tools and personal belongings.
  3. Strategies regarding my phone use that could help with my social-emotional health in highschool might include putting it away during class to avoid distractions as well as focusing more on meaningful face-to-face interactions with friends.

The Center for Human Technology states “Teens prioritizing digital communications over meaningful face-to-face interactions miss the chance to fundamental social skills.”

Kelly, the highschool we interviewed stated “I find that phones can be a bit distracting, especially in classes, so I just put it in my bag during them.”

Seasons and Models

Standard: I can develop a model of the Earth-Sun-Moon System to describe seasons, moon phases, and eclipses.

Guiding question: Why is it Colder in the Winter Than it is in the Summer?

Answer to guiding question: In summer, we get direct sunlight, and in winter, we get indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight makes the Earth warmer, and indirect sunlight makes the Earth less warm when compared to direct sunlight. Because of this, direct and indirect sunlight is the cause of warmer temperatures in the Summer, and colder temperatures in the Winter.

The Science Behind Ice-cream

Standard: I can develop a model that shows how adding or removing thermal energy affects particle motion.

Ingredient chosen: milk

Freezing is the phase change name for the milk ingredient, meaning the milk turned from a liquid to solid.  As thermal energy decreased/was removed, the particles moved closer together and had a stronger attraction toward each other. Additionally, the particles also moved much slower compared to when the state of matter was liquid.

Ratios unit test – reflection

  1. For this project, I had to convert ratios, divide, and add together numbers as well. (Addition)
  2. If I had another chance of doing this project, I would walk at a faster pace when timing myself and filling out the “predicted” rate. This way, I wouldn’t need to walk slowly in the actual race.
  3. We used units of measure such as __seconds/meter.” These units were quite important during the process. Groups that didn’t include units on their paper potentially got an approaching (if the paper was graded) or could’ve gotten confused with the distance. Is it __seconds per km, meter, 10 meters, or miles?

African Penguin Nest

When we first started the project, we learned about endangered species. In this case, the African penguins. African penguins rely on their guano (poop) as nests, in order to nurse their eggs while being protected from the heat and predators outside. However, humans have been taking their guano, resulting in many of them to have to lay their eggs on the hot ground outside. This led to the penguin population to decline drastically and resulted in many of the penguins to either die or their eggs dying.

However, humans have been trying to save the African penguins by building nests for the penguins. The nest is built using insulating materials that mimics the African penguin’s nest as much as possible.  Afterward, they plant the nests outside in their habitat, hoping for African penguins to discover the specially made nest.

Before creating the penguin nest, we had to learn about certain scientific concepts in order to make the best insulating (prototype) nest possible. I had to understand heat transfer, (heat moves from hot to cold, etc.) and best/worst insulating materials. For example, one of the materials we used is wooden sticks, which is one of the best insulating materials
